At big animation studios, are visual development artists 'ranked' higher than background painters/designers and other artists brought on when a show is in production?
What's the hierarchy, if there is one?

i have no idea

I don't imagine there is much of a hierarchy beyond the art director being at the top. My experience in studios is limited and not at a big animation studio, but it seemed that I was equal as a 2d artist to the animators and other artists involved.

bg artists get no attention despite being the most important imo.

How so, why are they important?
No one on this board knows?

I doubt many, if any, people here have first hand experience working in a big animation studio.

I don't think proper background artists even exist anymore at the big 3 western animation studios. They mostly transitioned to doing visdev jobs. I mean, those studios still need their skills in designing backgrounds, but they don't need pretty, finished background paintings anymore considering it's all 3D.

Thank you, this is very helpful info.
I guess that vis-dev work and background painting are about roughly equivalent. From my research, I can't find much difference in their pay.

>"what kinds of boxes and doors do they have in this world?"
I literally had this line fed to me except it was chairs.
