At big animation studios, are visual development artists 'ranked' higher than background painters/designers and other artists brought on when a show is in production?

What's the hierarchy, if there is one?

i have no idea

I don't imagine there is much of a hierarchy beyond the art director being at the top. My experience in studios is limited and not at a big animation studio, but it seemed that I was equal as a 2d artist to the animators and other artists involved.

bg artists get no attention despite being the most important imo.
>>
>>2753637
How so, why are they important?
>>
No one on this board knows?
>>
>>2753874
I doubt many, if any, people here have first hand experience working in a big animation studio.

I don't think proper background artists even exist anymore at the big 3 western animation studios. They mostly transitioned to doing visdev jobs. I mean, those studios still need their skills in designing backgrounds, but they don't need pretty, finished background paintings anymore considering it's all 3D.

EXECUTIVES:
>Creator/ Executive Producer ("my way or the high way" idea guys)
>Producers ("we'll give you money if you make it shitty")
>Writers (Universe Bible, "here's literally everything that can/will happen in text format")

STUDIO:
>Art Directors (responsible for the visual style of an IP,)
>Lead Artists (leaders of bg team, fx team, storyboard team, etc,)
>Senior Artists (painters/ designers, artstation boys)
>Junior Artists (Vis dev bitch work "what kinds of boxes and doors do they have in this world?")
>Entry Level Artists (sweatshop, follow the fucking rules, labor jobs, etc.)

FREELANCE:
>Talent (Voice Actors, Composers, Industry Veterans, Guest Artists, etc.)

Thank you, this is very helpful info.

I guess that vis-dev work and background painting are about roughly equivalent. From my research, I can't find much difference in their pay.

I literally had this line fed to me except it was chairs.
