Why does all of FZD's student's work look like they were drawn by the same person? They're nice in a technical sense but there's no depth in terms of personality.
>>
>>2752860
Because it is a 1-2 year program that focuses on developing the student's technical skills. Personality is something artists develop with experience naturally, it's not something that can or should be taught at a school.
>>
>>2752872
this, FZD only makes you grind fundamentals to take you to the starting line, once they have that they can start actually developping their art and take it in the direction they want to
>>
>>2752873
>>2752872
definitely is a factor, however I think the point is that it's a design school more than an art school. In one of his videos he mentions that himself and many other concept artists and designers have an extremely similar look to their sketches because they're really just there to communicate a design or idea, they don't need individual flair in the sketch or artwork itself, the individual is more likely to come across in the design.
>>
>>2752860
That's... what proper art schools do, anon, they teach you how to paint and draw in one particular way.

The Hudson River School and Northwest School, along with contemporary Russian Schools have the same effect. They have their particular style. You draw and paint the way they teach you.

It is up to the student to delineate themselves after the fact, but if this way of thinking bothers you then you shouldn't consider studying at an art school.

Which would surprise me, which the amount of bitching /ic/ does about contemporary anglo art "schools" that "nurture student talent" like a fucking nursery instead of getting to brass tacks.
>>
>>2753788
It could be that anglo art schools have been subverted and intentionally changed into shit schools...especially if it's consistent across the board.
>>
>>2753858
Well yes, Pop Art is the most significant (yes, absolute shit, but significant) art movement of the past century and it was an entirely Anglo based affair.

So all of the really good schools are from about 1880-1920, the last great hurrah of the western world's art academia.
>>
>>2753781
In some of his videos he even says that he isn't an artist or that he does art.
>>
>>2753902
That's more recently now that he's converted to a businessman.
>>
>>2753906
I haven't watched Feng's videos in years, but I remember him saying "I'm a designer first, artist second" all the time.

He's wrong and right. What he means is that the grind that they put you through will either make you come to hate art or love it depending on the type of person you are. There have been a lot of horror stories about hating the industry and their time at the school. Art school (and specifically FZD) is not for everyone. But it can really help those who are designed for it.
>>
>>2753982
The course is fine. The second hand stories I've heard about its attitude towards teachers and mediocre students is dreadful.
>>
>>2753788

if this is true, wouldn't it be easier to become a copy of some god tier artist, then branch off into your own thing?

like suppose i learn my fundamentals.. And i apply my knowledge towards an autistic master copy of some chinese, render-farm, Cryptids piece i find on Artstation. I keep doing this until i become a flawless imitation of that artist.

Wouldn't I just end up as a generic, technically skilled, render farm too?

And if that's the case, what's stopping me from just developing my own style over time?
>>
>>2754014
That's basically art school, yes. Instead of master copies you were just taught the exact technique to get the results so you still had something to show for it, but it's the same principle.

I mean it's not like the Hudson River School students stuck around, they went off and did their own shit afterwards. Developed and experimented towards their own ideals.

Traditional art apprenticeship works the same way, while under the Master's wing the student's work is basically a stroke for stroke copy.

But yeah, that's an extremely viable way of learning. One of the best ways.
>>
>>2753961
Find it funny that same thing is said about our academical tradition schools. "They don't teach CG and why the fuck do we have to study these stupid stupid vases columns and cast heads"
Guess it's international

>>2753985
>I've heard about its attitude towards teachers and mediocre students is dreadful

Please share
>>
>>2754069
Really, you want to hear it fucking third hand?

Long and short of it is that mediocre students get passive aggressively drummed out, and the teachers that Zhu courted ended up out of pocket, doing Zhu's lessons for him, dicked out of projects promised until they get fed up and leave.

And you know what, consider that a LIE until someone posts those screencaps and such because people believe too much shit on the internet.
>>
>>2754072
There have been many FZD threads on here so I'm more than willing to believe that shitty students get the passive-aggressive treatment.

Never heard that about the teachers tho. If anyone has whatever screencaps ur talking about I'd love some gossip

Just search the archive they've been posting on multiple occasions

Sometimes I think that the only way to live as an artist without the "stress" part is producing content to weebs at Deviantart. Like Sakimi Chan does.

freelancing it up while living near the beach in some shithole thirdworld country with the gf and a dog is my plan. Fuck working in a studio, never working in an office again.
>>

>>2754157 Here, I coincidently live near the beach in a third world shithole (Brasil). Its not as cool as it sounds - People over here are dumb, violent and dishonest (there is a reason we are third world shithole after all). If this is your plan, consider a middle-ground between a third world and the first world like Argentina, Uruguay or even Chile.

Chile was the plan :]

Why specifically? I actually don't know how FZD hasn't been sued the whole school seems like a death camp

How many students die or end up hospitalized?
>>
>>2754176
You can live quite comfortably with $2,5k on any place of South America. You can also impress some artsy girls if you live in a urban area.

The idea of getting inside of a death camp to be a great artist sounds interesting if at least we could get a good life out of that trouble. It's not the case, your lifestyle will probably be shitty even when you archive the skills necessary to land in a job.

Anyone who does art to earn a comfortable lifestyle is deluded.

The amount of effort required to be a good artist applied to any other career path would make you an order of magnitude more money. In fact the only reason that top artists are able to work as much as they do is their love for art itself. The work is their reward.

That brings us to the topic of discipline in art. Discipline alone is not enough, this isnt a military drill or a workout routine. Discipline comes from love for the subject you're doing. Cultivate love, not discipline and you will succeed.

I think you're right, I think you're really fucking bad right. Maybe I don't have real love for most of the stuff I do. You know, everytime I blame myself about the lack of discipline I have, my lack of focus - and in the end - I'm just trying to fix a deep crack in my soul with silver-tape.

Thank you for taking your time to write that, I really needed this. I will take sometime off the internet to reflect about what you wrote.

the hudson river school is not a school in that sense, it's just a group

This

All cars are built on the same working layout(s)
Then they add fancy mechanical work and unique body styles.
>>
Because they are not creating artist, they are creating designers.
>>
>>2753961
I remember Watts saying in one of his videos something about how it takes time to grind the fundamentals and how people are afraid of losing their creativity by doing a strict schedule of repetition. He said something to the effect of "If it was so weak that it could be lost by doing studies, it probably wasn't that good in the first place." I'd pull it up bu I think it's one of the videos behind the paywall.
>>
>>2754190
Uh, you can live quite comfortable in pretty much any country in the world on 2,5k per month as long as you don't live in overpriced apartments in trendy big cities.
