You don't need a book on drawing in charcoal specifically.
You'll see more progress in drawing self portraits from life than you will in drawing from books mainly.
What I'd recommend is to do a lot of self portraits, identify common problems and then consult various authors for their approaches on those problem areas.
So if, say, I was having trouble with noses I'd do some studies of noses from Bridgman, Loomis, Hogarth, Vilppu, Bammes, etc. and then try again from life.
Ron Lemen has some DVDs on the subject which could be found on cgpeers and elsewhere on the internet.

I really want to stress though that there is no substitute for life drawing. I'm not saying flat images are the devil but you need to draw from life also.
