How does /ic/ get by? I don't have a steady job and literally live off pornographic commissions. I live in a foreign country with my gf so the commission money is enough to meet all my needs and some wants.

Sometimes I do local work making fliers and advertisments. I even made a childrens book in my earlier days. What i really want to do is be one of those guys that does concept art and huge flashy paintings that make loads of money all the time. but its hard bridging the gap because literally all i do is study and draw every single day but i feel like my improvement is slowing down, which scares me.

What's your story /ic/?

You have to be careful with the way you judge your own progress. I think a lot of the time we really don't understand where we're at so our dominant emotion at the time, pessimism or optimism fills in the blanks. I think this is why a lot of people who take breaks come back to it feeling like they've done really well or poorly on the first piece after the break, but then later they look back at that specific piece and think it's just average.

As far as training goes, are you pushing yourself, or have you gotten too comfortable with what you're doing? Is your practice lacking variety or structure? Repetition is the key to skill, but you need to be aware of whether you've begun digging a rut to sit in. You could even be putting too much pressure on yourself and sabotaging your mentality.

There's also the cold hard fact that sometimes the picture in your head of where you want to be is just years down the road still.

All you can really do is maintain a healthy perspective of things and keep pushing your boundaries. Try new subjects, new mediums. Look for new sources of information you might have passed over. Spend some time refreshing yourself with some fundamental exercises. Don't get down in the dumps about anything or you'll start running into problems.

I work as a medical professional (CNS) and keep my art passion where it belongs, as a hobby. I have no delusions about the state of the illustration industry.

I work professionally as a woodworker which is a career I chose as a compromise between art and practicality. It gives me financial stability as well as a creative outlet of sorts.

I draw a lot on the side, as a hobby. I would like to one day get good enough to freelance and do commissions on the side, but I'm not there yet.

I spend most of my time drawing and gaming.
Mostly drawing, inktober etc. And work part-time. For daily expenses, food, transport, who am I kidding? I live with my parents. :(

where do you find these jobs?

Hope its ok to talk about this here, I've been thinking of improving my artwork to sell to people as well, I currently work a dead end production job and am currently looking for better paying jobs in addition to trying to improve my art. But I'm worried about my background on being on certain fetish related sites like Furaffinity. I commissioned some weird transformation porn pictures from various artists. At first I was into it, But I no longer wish to be that person, but now I'm constantly worried it might come back to bite me in the future. Since I sometimes think about getting published or going to conventions to sell art once I improve enough. Maybe people will found out about that and think I'm weird, and I havn't even drawn porn or anything fetish related for other people myself yet. I closed down the account i got those commissions on, so hopefully that helps me out a bit.

Just go under a new name and deny any connection.

I work part time and my gf works full time.

Are you sure you are not progressing or has your artistic eye just improved and your skills haven't caught up yet? Wouldn't surprise me if it's the latter especially since you're looking at those concept artists.

I work with graphic design and hate it, but it pays.
I'm drawing only about 2 hours a day, more on weekends.
I wish I could make more out of this hobby, but I don't know if it would make any kind of success out there.
Pic related.

If you want to get into the industry you gotta have industry oriented portfolio.

Choose a company you want to work for, check their preferred art. Make 5-10 pieces that you think they like to see in your portfolio. Post your art on artstation and deviantart. Send out your portfolio to companies(and fellow artists for review). It's not that complicated.

I work as a media producer for a tech company and do some art in my spare time. I make $60k a year uploading excel docs to databases and cropping jpegs, which has kind of killed any spark I had in aggressively seeking out illustration work.

That said.

>What i really want to do is be one of those guys that does concept art and huge flashy paintings that make loads of money all the time.

There are two ways to become an expensive, sought after illustrator.

1.) Be amazingly skilled and have work that is irrefutably impressive. That's hard to do with no reputation, or a reputation for drawing pornographic commissions, but you've got the work ethic it seems for #2.

2.) Be absolutely tenacious in doing whatever graphic design work you can. Design web banners for companies for $10, do logo design aggressively for anyone you can find (and it'll be kind of cheap work, but you'll be churning out $50 flat color vectors for startups and similar companies.) In addition to this, put out ads for graphic design work locally, it can't hurt. If you live in a populated area, hit up cafes and ask if they have a community board. If they do, put flyers for cheap graphic design work up there. Look online for any companies looking for a cheap graphic designer-- they're out there. You'll work hard but you'll get exposure. Once you do all of this you'll eventually have a portfolio that can let you work at as a concept artist for a company, or your own freelance studio.

Through facebook groups and 'strategic socialising'. I also keep contacts with alot of popular entertainers and businesses in my country so they often come to me for that sort of thing...

The hardest part is just getting the word out that you do that sort of work.
