what do you tell yourself to keep believing that you'll "make it" or continue "making it" as a livelihood?
while taking a semester off from school to study art isn't by any means outrageous or risky future-career-wise, myself from half a year ago would never imagine doing something like this. it's kinda scary imagining taking complete responsibility for everything - failures included - for once.

I have no fucking clue what you exactly mean. Seems like you totally fucked up and you don't even know it yet. Nobody with half a clue will want you for that half year you did some art. They will either think you aren't good enough (because you only did it for that much) or that you will jump ship soon (because you did it.)
Except maybe you are in art school right now. And you take a break to do art while you do art.
