Does anyone have a proper file for this Mullins painting? This one is kind of low res and blurry and covered by that huge logo.

I'm interested btw because it seems to be a different version of this painting. I want to see how it all extends to the left and how he treated things with a different colour cast.

They're not even shooting at eachother. Obviously that's because it's a painting jammed into another painting but still.

I also find it interesting how logos and title fonts turn a pretty good painting into a tacky piece of shit. I have to force myself to ignore the logos to actually see the painting underneath is pretty good
>>
>>2703076
Looks to me like he just bashed that painting into the one in the op, rather than it being a different version.

You can see the one in the op doesn't make much sense, probably because he was trying to build it around the musket line he already had, and the painting would've been shit if he arranged the elements in a sensical manner

They also did a really heavy handed job. If they made the logo smaller to actually show off the painting and then made the border darker so it didn't compete then it would look better. Quick edit to show how it can be done in a way that makes the painting shine a bit more.

>>2703402
Looking at it again I think you're right. I guess even Mullins has to deal with that type of shit from clients. I'm still interested in seeing a better version of the one I posted in the OP.
>>
>>2703076
Man, thinking about it, how do you not go deaf with all these muskets going off right next to you?
>>
Since people are complaining of the logo ruining it, I thought I'd contribute some more Mullins Age of Empires shenanigans.

>>2703430
They probably did lose some hearing. I imagine that the guns back then weren't as powerful or loud as modern guns though. Maybe some history buff can chime in.
>>
>>2703430

Industrial deafness is the least of your worries in a musket line.
>>
>>2703430
>how do you not go deaf

You do go deaf. Ever shot a gun? Even a .22 is loud as hell. Shooting one for the first time made me rethink everything I knew about that specific caliber.

So, I find difficult to keep some hearing in those conditions. You have to add the noise of artillery anyways.

Explain the image.
>>
>>2704504
Interesting sketch, but horrible and boring final. Obviously an art director stepped in and made some comments about making it less colorful and to get rid of the clouds to make it more like the plains, maybe made some other comments too. In any case, the life and interest of the sketch was lost through bad decisions in the final.
>>
>>2704516
I too prefer the left image as a standalone piece, but if the artwork was done for a project it only makes sense the art director sees that it gets geared towards the overall look and idea behind it, right?
It has to work in the context, not for itself.

Yeah that one is one of my favourites. I think the Age of Empires work that Mullins did is some of his best work in his career too. Here's one that no one ever posts and I haven't seen in any Mullins collections or zip files, I only stumbled across it a few days ago.

As others mentioned, the logo makes it shit, and finding a version without the logo is a pain.

Fun fact about that painting, it took him a week of work to make. He built a 3d model of Capitol Hill and then painted beneath the wireframe. "The image appeared on an Al-Qaeda website as an illustration of what was to come for the West. In a way, I guess I was happy that I did my job well enough that someone thought the image summed up the end of America. It's always gratifying when an illustration has a life outside of the purpose for which it was made." According to that quote by him he would be proud of merc_wip. Here's a sketch he did for the same project. He said he would knock out about two sketches like this a night.

I happened to have a friend who stumbled across that issue and scanned it for me. Throguh digging I've found other stuff about Mullins, but most of it is pretty obvious stuff. If you read the Sijun pdf you can get a lot of insight into him and his thoughts and influences, he is quite open about things. Most people I know haven't bothered to read the entire thing though, so maybe that's part of why it seems like I know a lot on him.

As for that image, I'm afraid I don't know. I'll post up two alternate sketches he did though for that scene. It may have been for a game, but it might have just been him having fun. Someone else might know.

Yeah a lot of digital is imitating traditional paints, and Mullins often combines the two like using his traditional paintings as a texture base for his digital works. The acrylic painting is still obvious if you look closely, in the same way this painting is obviously digital.

You don't really need to see the images he is critiquing. Don't forget that a lot of the work posted then that he was commenting on was from beginners, so it wasn't all that different than the stuff you see here. If he points out value errors they were probably major things that you see here too, not just minor subtle secret things. I recommend reading hte whole pdf at your leisure. It can be skipped around in, you don't need to do front to back. Near the very end though there are some paint overs he did where you can see the original images too.

>>2705958
>You wouldn't happen to have anything from his art school time or even prior to that?
Not really. I have a handful of his school stuff but he hasn't posted much of it over hte years, and what he has posted a lot hasn't been archived properly so is gone now. Maybe there's someone out there who has it saved on their personal computer but some things are not publicly available really. Pic related was done when he was as Art Center though.

There's a third image that goes with those, iirc it was warm sunlight and he included chairs and tables. I don't see it in my files though, but there are like 1300 images to look through. Instead, here's a gouache painting he did while in school. I know he once posted some industrial design drawing from his portfolio for school, I think it was an ornithopter? Yes, he's stupidly productive and has an insane work ethic. Even if it was different and he was talented as a kid, then it would be impressive how he's kept growing all this time. I know he's talked about working 12 hour days every day, and that's at points in his life when he had a family and stuff too so he was keeping up with responsibilities other than art at the same time. He also reads a fair bit and watches documentaries, and apparently got to a near pro level in golf before cutting back on it. Oh and he likes gardening I think, he has talked about getting into the science of growing banana plants and things. He also talked about during art schools driving a pickup truck filled with so many life drawings the suspension was wearing out--he was driving to the dump to throw it all out. And as he pointed out, he's not even that great at figure drawing.

I first noticed this after I did a comission for a book cover, I thought it was one of my better paintings then as soon as the guy sends me the cover with title my picture suddenly looked like utter trash. It was a sad day. But yeah, it's very strange.
>>
>>2706156
It's not that strange. In artwork the goal is for the art to look good. When a company slaps their logo or a title on something then the goal is to have that logo or title be the focus--they want people to read it and see it. So now you have two competing things for focus. Also it's very rare for the artwork and the text or graphic design elements to be done by the same person, so the artwork is not designed at the same time with the intention of supporting and working with the text. In the rare cases where the artist is also responsible for the text (and is skilled with it) then the results can be really great. Here's a nice article showing Sam Weber doing this. Notice how the artwork looks like it is missing something without the text, and how the alternate sketches he provided used the text as an integral part of the artwork so it is one unit instead of two things mashed together:

Also i vaguely remember from an older mullins thread someone claiming he himself said that he wouldn't recommend going through his sijun posts, as the advice is outdated. Something along those lines. Does somebody have a source for that or knows why he said that and what to make of it?

The bridge movie is gone I think. I saw it years ago and it was pretty lame especially by today's standards, like very basic and simple and low res. It's a 1.7mb file, so it's obviously not much to look at.

He did another video showing him painting pic related. But it was done like 15+ years ago, and if I remember it was done with a mouse before he got a tablet. This video (in two parts) can be found on some chinese video sites if you dig around a bit for it. It's fun to see if you are a fan of his and can appreciate it within context, but it's not groundbreaking or particularly interesting.

The stuff with him talking about the advice being outdated in the sijun posts, well some of it might be. I think he more was afraid of people reading and taking too seriously what he made as offhand remarks on a forum 15 years ago. he probably doesn't remember half of what he wrote and is worried there may be something embarrassing in there or people will be reading things out of context since the pdf just has his writings and not the entire threads.

Wow thanks! I've been interested in seeing this ever since it happened but didn't get around to finding/buying it.

>>2708891
I'm not that other guy and not going to register, but which video is that? If the other anon hasn't seen it they should look for the Gnomon Masterclass he did as it has him talking about a lot of important things and then there is like an hour long painting demo of pic related. There's also a Wacom demo he did in 2011 in China, that is easy to find, but it's terrible quality so just watch it in the background while you paint and listen to it or something.
>>
>>2708922
Yeah, he paint the picture you posted in that video.
It's the only one "normal" painting video that I found. Didn't tried to find more though.
>>
Is there any tutorial from him ?

are these stills from the movie, from his imagination or both
>>
>>2709002

These are pre-production paintings, so yes they are not from imagination.

They are, I mean

This is an amazing thread to wake up too. Thanks anons.

Mullins is amazing indeed :)

Here's a comparison pic I made to see what design decisions he makes when doing a study
>>

You can still hear with even modern ear pro. It just dampens the sound so instead of getting 150+ db into your ears you're getting like <120 db.

This just says two things: you've never shot a gun before and you've never shot a gun while you had to talk to someone.

It's a joke, anon.

fuuuark.. how does he get the colours on the rocks so perfect? sometimes i wonder if he's a hack and uses a smear brush on photos
>>
>>2710246
He does sometimes paint on photos, or on top of oil paintings or 3d models. The crazy brushwork in that one is the mixer brush. If he's a hack for that though then what the fuck does that make the rest of the industry? Anywaysm the colours on that one are not the most mindblowing part of that image even, like the way he does the fucking textures and contrasts it with the smoothness of the foreground is so delicious.

>>2710201
no wonder, he left no room for anything

Only 67% sure? His brain is basically better at lighting than a computer, but he is smart about using references or tools to push himself further especially for client work.

What happened to the other anons here that were excited to talk about Mullins?
>>
>>2705985
>tfw if mullins can make it, so can you
Although, how did he get into Art Center? Was he rich or something? You have to be pretty capable to get in.
>>
>>2711378
I think Art Center now is very different than it used to be. He's talked of it a bit, but basically it was much cheaper back then and I think they would let people in largely based on grades too. Mullins is a smart guy so I wouldn't be surprised if he got in primarily from a high gpa. Also there was definitely less competition back then since it only became trendy to study this type of art in the last decade and he went to school like almost 40 years ago.

I was hoping people would share more things, maybe anecdotes about him, rare images or interviews, videos etc.

>>2711832
Seems silly to post crops like that. Compare both to each other as full paintings, it's really neat that way as the homage is much clearer.

There these studies from?

>I was hoping people would share more things, maybe anecdotes about him, rare images or interviews, videos etc.
I only have a bunch of his drawings (include that big ass resolution pack) and read about 20 pages of the SijunPosts.pdf
But I'd like to add some works to my collection and know something useful.

You mean where are they from? I knew they were studies and so just tracked down the source. There was also a thread a while back where people found out the exact ref he used on some paintings, can't remember if I made this one or someone else did, but it's neat.
