Ah. So this is what it is all about. What you're really bitching about here is that artists do pandering to get exposure.

You may think that artists should only do OC. They must be uncreative leeches!
But it's not about what the artist wants. It's about what the public wants.

Demand -> Supply

The public has no desire to consume any garbage that any person can spew out. Some ideas are better that others. Some stories are better than others. And we want to see more of those.
If the public likes a character, they have an inherent desire to see more of that character.

In Japan, making fanart (doujinshi) out of IPs and selling it for money is the norm.

The original creators see it as free advertising. It's considered an honor. The overwhelming majority of manga artists get started this way. Copying is learning.

The west suffers from "Muh special snowflake" syndrome. Commercial art is about the fans, nobody cares about your self expression. Pull the stick out of your ass. You're not that interesting.
