It's stupidly fucking easy. The information on it is no doubt on youtube and will take 5minutes of your time.

Using patterns (under the brush texture setting) is common and when using a paper texture it can yield good results. If you look at the brushsets by fabian schlaga, zedig and jamajurabaev you have pretty much all the information you need to make everything you could want.

A lot of otherwise very good and respected artists have started selling their brushes though. I honestly don't even think it's about the money for most of them. It's probably more the fact that after getting asked for the 124234525 time "what brushes do you use?", they get really fucking tired of this question and of answering honestly with "brushes don't matter" and instead succumb to the apparently very real market of noobs willing to buy digital brushes.
