Completely different situation to the OP.

A work created by an employee in the scope of his job is owned by the employer, which the Warhol situation presumably was. This is what happens when you're actually employed by a studio.

Contracted works (commissions) are LEGALLY OWNED BY THE ARTIST UNLESS EXPRESSLY AGREED TO VIA SIGNED CONTRACT.

Its pretty common that a client should pay 50% – 150% of the initial cost extra if they want the PSD.
