Bring us your roughs, your storyboards, your pencil tests etc. Talk about industry, schools, the hopelessness of it all, how we all gonna make it etc.

If you're gonna post animation that isn't yours give source or state that it isn't yours.

Keep shitposting to a minimum. Don't feed the trolls.

Metal slug 1 through 3 and known for their beautiful animations

The fight scenes for Ashita no joe and Ashita no Joe 2 have all of the budget spent on them. It's an anime with stretch and squash incorporated, by god!

A few episodes of Batman: The animated series are very very well animated. The whole show looks wonderful thanks to Bruce Timm's art direction but some episodes just have amazing moments. Like the Clayface debut episodes with him shape-shifting at the end. Or the Robin origin story.

I would recommend checking out sakugabooru for a collection of animations.
>>
>>2689985
I'm afraid that you will rarely find any shows with good animation. They just don't have time or budget to produce high quality animation. If yo want to see good animation however then look no further than Disney's Fantasia (1940 version the 2000 version sucks balls)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7gLlIv4ito

My personal favorite part is the waltz of flowers from the nutcracker suite.

Other good examples are cartoons such as the old mill and the brave little tailor.

how profitable is youtube per view count?

I think unless you manage to get people to watch 3 minutes or more you don't get shit. I can't remember, but a lot of animators abandoned youtube because of it.

It's not about view count, it's about watch time/length.

A video 10 minutes long with 100k views will make 4x an animation thats 1 minute long and has a million views.

Now imagine that amplified by the fact that letsplays can poop out daily 30 minute long videos while an animation channel can produce one 2 minute long video a month.

Here's SSUNDEES hacked adsense revenue for comparison.

I would do the exact same shit. It's not as bad as you make it out to be, I'm sure most of them think of it like they're putting on a performance for their audience. Question, does using the light tables in various animation softwares take something away from ones work? I almost wonder if there is something you gain from rolling pages but not necessarily being able to see your previous drawing. It makes me wonder if light tables have become a bit of a crutch and take out some of the spontaneous creativity you need between pages.
>>
>>2691154
Even with onion skin layers you should always go through the frames to get a vetter feeling for the flow
>>
>>2691160
That's what I was thinking, though my current thought process is that light tables or onion skin just clutter the area in which you are drawing really keeping you from focusing. They also make the animation a bit more mechanical because you don't get as much creative "change" in your work. I think I'm going to go forward only using onion skin when I'm doing a moving hold or light bounce. See how that treats me for a bit. It's going to be a crazy change considering I've worked using onion skin for 3 years now just hitting the play button periodically to test the motion.
>>
So I want to do a sex animation, and I'm kind of wondering if there's any really good examples? Studio hentai is generally way too stiff, and there's some individual artist that have good motion but Is there any specific artist out there that does great sex animations on a consistent basis? Subject matter/style doesn't matter (western, eastern, furry w/e). I'm just trying to think of the best way to tackle it.
>>
>>2691154
>light tables in software
You mean onion skin?

And you should always be scrubbing back and forth

>>2691229
I sort of do, but as I said it's just a bunch of pressing the play button once I'm finished with an action to test it. I didn't usually need to scrub since I could see the frame before and after but I feel it made shit more mechanical. Here's a quick sketchy motion I did a couple of days ago that sort of shows what I mean. It has a bunch of imperfections, but it's something.
>>
>>2691248
Bind forward and back to W and R (or whatever is comfortable) and scrub through your animations as you go. It's more or less the same as rolling. You can even bind Onion Skin On/Off to E or whatever to quickly turn it off to roll your drawings.

That animation is too fast. Why don't you start it off slow like his anger is building and then have him punch? That way you'll have some performance in it. As it is this is just a blank faced muscle guy making a weird punch esque motion.
>>
File: image.gif (88KB, 1280x720px) Image search: [Google]
image.gif
88KB, 1280x720px
>>2691279
Oh, I agree. It really isn't even a punch more than a weird swipe and it is to fast. Here's one that's more readable I did a while back. Still might be to fast though.

I just got back into animating after a year of experimenting with other art forms so I'm rusty as fuck and my quality has gone down, but I've come back with a great understanding of what makes 2D animation different from the other mediums.

At this point I'm just going through the paces of building myself up again to do stuff and while I was watching videos of old animators do their work I noticed how little they relied on seeing their previous or next drawing at all times and thought there might be something there. Something that happens when you let your mind create the inbetween without being able to constantly see your keys. I'll have to develop a new workflow, so I appreciate your advice on the key rebindings.

So I guess a last small question, when doing an inbetween, would it be better to place the drawing after the drawing it favors, or where it would normally go in the timeline. When doing it traditionally the animator would place it infront of the favored drawing, then, after they were done they would put it in its proper place. Digitally I don't know if there is a need for this, but small things like that could make a difference.

I did a thing I always do, which is start something and then lose interest when I have it solved in concept instead of putting in the time to actually enact the solution. I came back to it again to try and at least get it to a state that could be called "complete".

I'll get serious when I find myself in need of actual finished work for a portfolio or something. Which is basically never, unfortunately, since I don't see my art as a career.

Any schedule made by anyone but yourself will be shit. Get a good understanding of what skills are needed, experiment for some time and then you can create a very good schedule perfectly customized for you and with thought and understanding behind it. Getting creative and involved in creating a schedule instead of getting one handed to you on a silverplate will teach you a lot of things and will make you feel less lost in the long term. Also no one here is even remotely decent so there is also that when asking for a schedule.

Gestures feel to loose, basic shapes feel to consistent and rigid, and going for the final drawing leaves to many stutters and inconsistencies.

Are there any other ways to sketch out poses for animation? Ways that don't necessarily have you drawing everything from the ground up but also don't have you trying to do to much at once?

to nitpick:
You animated this as if the string was connected directly to the top. The string actually attaches to the side of rod, so when it is dragged the rod should be at a slight angle so that its centre of mass lines up with the string. If the string and its point of tension is meant to be touching the surface the rod should roll to put the knot at the bottom.
Also I'd say this is pulling pretty fast so unless the coefficient of friction with the surface is really high the rod should jiggle a little at the end of its rotation as it loses its angular momentum.

How come this is one of the best animators when it comes to animating dances?
More often than not dancing animation seems really rigid and unnatural but this looks pretty good.
>>
>>2695249

Simply shapes and objects that allow for the flow to be easier to translate and animate out smoothly.

Is it possible to do pose-to-pose animation in Krita? Please help fampaisanos. Animating straight ahead can be fun and all but pose to pose seems more logical.

Assuming Krita can't, is there a different software that can and doesn't suck a fat wiener at it?

Is there anything that really makes TVPaint better than PS/CSP for animating? I have all three but never animated in PS or CSP. Was thinking of doing so as they're honestly just better programs for drawing. I would imagine PS would pretty much be better since you can bring in a 3D environment to manipulate easier.

Thanks, I think that was it. But five seconds of success only poses new problems.

What I did for this is hand drawn on index cards, scanned, and edited into usable frames. In a test run, I tried to use the import method in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=il5J5Ymn1U8 (along with this renaming thing he talked about in the comments), but the frames don't show up when I go to their location in Load Layer (Weirdly enough there's this other dummy file I worked with days ago that shows up wherever, but that's irrelevant.)

Pic related, the actual frames (mass renamed for importing) and what Load Layer says. Any ideas? They're all single-frame gifs, if that matters.
>>
>>2696131
Actually shit, I think I found out the issue. I looked at my reactions folder (which has a shitton of moving gifs) and Opentoonz would only show my pngs and jpgs. I need to mass convert all of the frames to one of those formats before I can even try to fiddle around with it more. Real pain in the ass.

Since all of my framesets are just static gifs, anyone know how to do good large-scale filetype conversion that's not mindkillingly tedious?

>>2696182
I'd recommend just doing a stick-figure/mannequin character next time, that way you won't be losing focus thinking about anything but the motion. Also it might help to add the rest of the person in too, because as is you're not really getting a feel for character as a whole (the scale of your shit keeps changing). Hell, even try adding a straight line across at the height of the head to make it easier to track the ups and downs of the cycle.

When drawing for cleanup in animation is it better to have pressure sensitivity on or turn it off and have a consistent, thin line in which you can build up in a second pass?

When I think about it, there aren't to many traditional drawing tools that actually had much "pressure sensitivity", especially when you get into pens.

Alright anon allow me to tell you a story.

Once upon a time nintendo launched a drawing application for the 3ds that allowed you to share your drawings with your friends. The mascot for this application was a girl named Nikki. She tought you how to use the application and even sent you notes on holidays. Everyone loved her.

Then one day Nintendo decided to pull the plug on the app's internet features and no one could send notes to anyone anymore. It was awfully sad. Nikki was considered out of a job. Later on dear Nikki got her very own game exclusive to japanese club nintendo members in the form of a quiz game and even showed up on Nintendo's website to deliver a few bits of news concerning NNIDs and smash bros. amiibos.

Nowadays Nikki has her own set of badges in Nintendo's collectible badge arcade and has grown a bit popular. However her badges' popularity seem to pale in comparison to the badges of a certain girl next door living in a haunted mansion, Ashley. They've both gotten a bit of a following through the badges, and have cameo'd in eachother's sets (said to be pretty good friends with eachother) but one is clearly more popular than the other judging by the amount of cameo Badges Ashley has been getting over Nikki.

I want to make her significant again.

I was thinking of pitching a two minute thing to Nintendo to show what I had in mind. Since two minutes is pretty doable. I was thinking of a 12 24-minute episodes deal with them. That's my goal anyway. Maybe the episodes could consist of her traveling to different nintendo IPs or just have her living in a city full of nintendo characters and doing odd-jobs for nintendo. the latter sounds more interesting actually.

Also pixiv ain't perfect either. Japanese laws need you to censor genitals. Now it slowly eases into frame one and quickly comes out of it.

the tip doesn't have to stop at that one point. You could have the tip of the sword do a figure eight swing around before you loop again or something.

>>
>>2699027
It's worth noting that this animation will occasionally be interrupted by another animation. After a few loops I could make him look around, or swing his sword like you mentioned. Basically if you've played Smash Bros before think something like how Mario adjusts his cap at random intervals when you wait around for a bit.
Knowing that, is this animation fine for the base idle that gets interrupted by these sorts of actions
>>
>>2699034
none of that makes a difference.

When making a loop you have to hide that it's a loop.

it's not about the amount of frames you've got. you've got plenty of frames. lessening it would be a bad idea probably.

pay attention to the tip of the sword and the shape it's making by moving. imagine that the tip of the sword is a pencil and it is drawing a shape. try and make that shape more rounded. it doesn't have to be a perfect circle, it could be an oblong. do that.

Much better, anon. Nice job. THAT'S hiding a loop well.

although one thing's still bugging me.... Why are you uploading these to imgur? This is an imageboard, upload them here directly instead.

Filesize limit
Brawlbox has a poor compression method where it somehow makes the gif look bad AND the filesize is still too big for me to post it here.
Fun fact: more than half of the time between that post and the ones I was replying to was just uploading the shit/my fucking browser crashing.
Fun times
In any case, I also love where it's at right now. Looking at the front-on view really gives off the precise (exact) personality I was hoping to give this guy.
Thanks for your advice, I wouldn't get here on my own and I'm sure the rest of my animations are gonna look better with my newfound knowledge

the animation is really great but i think some more morphing between each of the objects could bring some fluidity

ya know, dissolution, visual effects, plane/perspective play

all i can advise you is to watch motion graphics works on yt and to see how they switch from an object to another

these guys are great

I'm really into stick figure fights, so I was inspired to make some of my own. I'm trying to master the feel of battle and moving limbs keeping proportion, also having it being really small means I need to learn better emphasis on movement and combat.

Do you guys see anything else wrong with it? And any tips you may have to help keep the fight lively.

Also any animation tips in general, still very new to it.

Anyone know the name of that flash animation that's all bright and colorful but is actually about a girl being taken to hell? It's fucking ancient and google isn't helping.

>Do you guys see anything else wrong with it
The fight looks a bit stiff and floaty. One huge issue I see is both of the stick figure's size changing(growing and shrinking) throughout the gif.

Check out the 12 Principles of Animation. Learning these principles can help your animations look more fluid and superb down the road.

Adam Phillips' course on effects is the best effects related content I'm aware of

http://bitey.com/category/academy/fx-animation/

Speaking of him, I can't believe an old guard indie animator like him only makes $1000 on patreon

https://www.patreon.com/bitey

Kind of a shame, he's one of the better animators I remember from Newgrounds.

Well, I can assure I'm not ever going the route of "Modern CalArts Style", I have better standards for that. But animu stuff isn't CalArts.
>It's a fake gesture that nobody has ever made in real life
>PPG is now real
It's fine. I appreciate the concern, but I'll make sure to just play around with things I like just to practice for bigger projects later on.

>>2700609
btw, I will keep this in mind. I'll try doing more of that next time I can animate stuff.

Just like the nose bleeding and the "lolsorandom lemme just falldown xD" moments in 90% of anime. Calm your pussy.

I've been using the copy in there for a while now, haven't had any issues with it. It does automatically open up some blog whenever you launch it but it's not like the blog spams you with ads constantly, just close the window and you're fine.

>heads are the fucking worst.
An easy way to make the head the same size is to trace over it in your first frame. Keep it to the side as a reference and drag it over your stick figure's head whenever you feel like it's getting too small or too big.

>Any recommendations?

1st Red Arrow: The stick figure on the right skids on the ground when he gets punched in the jaw, it looks really off. If someone is getting punched that hard, I'd imagine they would get knocked down to the ground. If you have extra time, make him fall down on his back and animate him quickly pushing his body off the ground with all the force coming from his legs to get back up while his back is on the wall and the arms clinched onto the wall.

2nd Red Arrow: When the stick figure on the right is getting punched against the wall repeatedly, exaggerate the head's form. You don't have to, but I recommend making his head squish with every received punch. Or with every punch, make his head dribble back and forth against the wall like a basketball. As of right now, it looks like the stick figure on the left has really weak punches, or the right figure has a head made of steel.

This was my first fully finished animation after a year of small fundamental learning on and off.(Im at a art school but not for animation yet) Animated in Flash then used Hitfilm 3 to edit in 3d effects like rain and storms and create 3D background layers.
