In his first book there's actually a back story to that painting that says there was a rumour of some kind of creature swimming around down there. But regardless it's a good story telling device when you don't serve everything on a platter to the viewer. Just as in horror movies where supernatural forces are scarier when implied rather than shown. I also like pic related 'cause you have to imagine what has gone down around the corner
