Am I wasting my time studying a degree in fine art?

Every single fucking day I'm surrounded by wannabe artists who produce "conceptual" works of art and are praised for their garbage.

I have a strong background in traditional oil painting and technical drawing and am looked down upon by my superiors for being "old fashioned" or not contemporary enough.

Where the fuck do these people think they're going? I'm still young and have my whole life ahead of me.

I have a relative who is a photographer, and have thought about transferring into a photographic degree and working as a photographer of some sort.

What do you guys think? Is there light at the end of the tunnel?

why are you doing fine art?

go to a digital art school, if you go to a good one they'll teach you the traditional stuff as well as digital stuff.

that way you may actually get a job.

instead of working in mcTrumps or mcHillarys for the rest of your life.

I love fine art and it's a great opportunity to express unrelated ideas on a visual platform. I study illustration and I'm constantly photographing, listening to music, reading books and socialising in my spare time, which I transfer into my art work. Just be confident with your shit, you could literally take photos in your course so why not just do that and not give up like a little bitch?

where do you people work?

seriously?

fine art is terrible as a job, and as an education.

You can get more out of more modern disciplines, and you can get good at "traditional" or "fine art".

A good digital school will require you to have a good traditional base, and they'll help you put your skills to use in a modern market.

Fine art is a good degree of you know how to use it. There's almost no industry within the course, however the things you learn can be applied. That's why it's bad to judge it by what you see, and instead judge it by what you learn. Use your fucking head
>>
Dont care about those posers. They will never get a foot into the industry
>>
>>2688984
What industry is available?
>>
>>2688930
What is in fine art except the craft with its fundamentals?
>>

Wait you're actually majoring in fine art? The degree itself is always called Bachelor's in Fine Arts whether you're digital art, cartooning, or animation, but if you're actually majoring in fine art gtfo. It's a trap for ego boosting and nothing else. Either switch majors to illustration or transfer colleges to something that actually requires technical skill.

Find clientele for commissions and host workshops.

As someone that's also getting a BFA, it sounds like it.

A BFA, in a program that emphasizes contemporary visual arts, better positions you for a career in museum or curatorial work than working as a visual artist. If you're working from a purely technical sense, without understanding the conceptual framework that art exists, it's no surprise that you might be criticized as being facile in this environment- you're not even trying to engage with what the program is trying to teach you.

If you really want to engage with traditional skills and work as a commercial illustrator or animator, then there are actual schools for that as well. IMO if you want to draw, just go draw. Like most technical skills you can just teach yourself, and if your goal is to work commercially, then a strong portfolio is worth more than the sheet of paper anyways.

>transferring into a photographic degree

If you're interested in being a commercial photographer, then switch your major to business or commerce, and then take as many photography courses as electives as you can. Photography is just as conceptual as anything else.

Dude, your post basically starts with 'is it worth it,' but then the rest of your post is just about how youre disillusioned by the people next to you.

I think you should connect the dots. How is whatever those retards are doing any relevant to you?

If you're not willing to adapt and specialize in multiple things that are actually needed by industries, then you're just like an ostrich with its head in the dirt - a hobbyist thinking he will get free money for oils.

How do you even know what's "actually needed" by the industries? Aren't they always showcasing what's a few years behind their schedule?
>>
>>2689659
aren't some skills just widely needed? like storyboarding, 3d modelling, illustration
