Not him but it's accounts the same as howd you look at it for normal art. He's giving all his forms these ugly outlines, when they're not needed to define the form and it looked much better without it, plus his values seem a bit off. You could argue it's "style" but the pillow in 2012 looks much more like a pillow than 2013. The only actual improvement was the thrown blanket as it adds a bit of interest.

I don't think it's cringe personally, but artist could definitely of done better.

I see this kind of thinking fairly often, that beginners should take whatever tips from whatever source they can get, but that's bullshit. Where do you go after you've exhausted what little wisdom from idiots you can get? And how much misinformation do you need to absorb with it.

Having read a lot of credible art books for beginners, almost all of them, at least in passing, mention how the unlearned, either complete beginners or children, will have an easier time learning than someone who not only needs to learn but un-learn bad habits as well.

As a rule, if you are learning from someone it should be someone markedly proficient in their field. Reason why /ic/ hammers Loomis so much is for that exact reason. Cases of Dunning-Kruger who can't do so figure they'll teach are just data pollution that keep people from more easily finding helpful resources.

I can't begin to imagine the aggregate effect shitty books and lecturers have had on gross artistic ability among artists. It's horrifying to think about.

I agree entirely, but in this particular video I find she doesn't really offer any demonstration or tutorial, so there is not a huge potential for viewers to pick up any shitty habits. She basically just goes over various elements of art and if anything invites the viewer to dig deeper. Occasionally she mentions good tips like flipping your canvas too.

To be honest she strikes me as someone who is not confident enough in her own art to offer specific advice, and instead sticks to pretty general advice. It's a pretty shitty video for anyone serious, but if you're pre-highschool and you don't know what the difference between line and form is, it's fine.

This is the real cringe. I remember when I first started learning about painting that this guy was awesome, and his paintings looked amazing. I just stumbled upon his DeviantArt after years of not looking at his work and it's kinda atrocious in comparison. I've seen plenty better on /ic/, I don't get why he's a big industry name. I thought ya'll were just a bunch of jealous fags when you talked shit about his work but you were right all along, he's so mediocre.

A lot of artists I admired back then still hold up mind you, like Rapoza or Mullins, although my appreciation for them changed qualitatively. Has that happened to anyone else?
