Interest is the most important thing. You were having it as a kid, you were not searching for "improvement".
You're just shooting yourself in the foot. Take time to draw whatever the fuck you want, then you'll want to do it better, and then you'll have motivation to do drills and exercises.
Doing studies until the hypothetical day where you will finally authorize yourself to draw something you like is just a recipe for burn-out.
