To anyone trying to make it, who is not chinese or south korean. Do you seriously look forward to drawing and painting 12-16 hours every single day until the day you die? Seems more like modern slavery than happiness to me. I feel like life is way too short and precious to ruin it like that.

It hurts doing it, but it'll hurt even more not to.
>>
>>2677441
i would love it......sit around all day and draw and paint and get paid for it?at home? that would be great...but i can draw while im hanging out with my friends and still concentrate as well.
>>
>>2677446
You'd like it for the first few months and then you'd want to kill yourself due to depression.
>>
It's frustrating, it's stressful, it's me sitting all alone by the computer, but all the works and effort makes me feel more alive than ever.
>>
>>2677447
i dont get depression sir im' not an emotional person.
i do it all the time anyway. (stay at home and draw and paint most hours of the day.) i just have to have a regular job because i haven't "made it" yet. so i gotta support myself. but luckily i dont have to work much to make enough.
i view women and girl friends as a waste of time on the sex situation i dont really care about that . i already have a kid so my bloodline is continued already.
all i need to be happy in life is drawing and such and hanging out with my friends every now and then and my kid, all of whom support my quest to get gud.
>>
>>2677441
Or you could just get an in-house job and have a regular 8 hour work day. Freelancers who work 16+ hours a day are usually young artists who are intoxicated by the fact that they can make a ton of money and all they have to sacrifice is their health and sleep schedule. You will not find many seasoned professionals who work more than 8 hours a day.

That said, many professionals do actually consider personal work and just random doodles or life drawing after their daily workload is done as a relaxing hobby. So they might get to 12+ hours a day that way.

Real talk. I'm making a living as a freelance concept artist and my week looks pretty much like in OP's image. I've been doing this for about five years now and it's killing me on the inside. In my mind there's a voice screaming that I need to get out. I don't have any actual friends because I don't have time to socialize, at all. I haven't gotten laid in years and I haven't traveled outside my city since I started freelancing.
At first I loved it. I'm a mild introvert, I love hanging around my PC and for a short while I felt like I found my place in life. Turns out humans are not made for this. We need stimulation and sitting in front of your PC all day, everyday won't give you enough.
There are so many jobs out there, that are half as demanding and pay twice as much and I'd love to have one like that. The thing that keeps me from quitting is my pride. I've sacrificed so much for this, I can't just give it all up. The worst part is that art doesn't give back nearly as much as you put in.
You pretty much have to sacrifice your life and for what? People look down on you because you don't have a "real job", people don't want to pay you because you're just an artist and you're love what you're doing anyway, right? The greatest artists of this day and age are completely unknown to the public. Back before the world wars big artists were rockstars around the globe. What the fuck happened?

Anyway, I'm just ranting at this point. I'm stuck, I hate it and I would not recommend this kind of lifestyle to anyone, who is not on a warpath against his own sanity. Payment sucks and it gets worse year after year with no end in sight and you're always worrying about where to get that next gig to pay your bills. And with all the kids flooding the market right now, who work for practically nothing because it's their "summer job", it gets even worse. I'm 26 and I feel like a 55 year old in his mid-life crisis. It's just awful.

You're a human being, you get depressions.

>>2677464

you know you can use paper and go out right???? all this talk of pc.... get out of the house for fuck sakes .
and also you could get a regular job part time and keep drawing. and make friends or something.

>are usually young artists who are intoxicated by the fact that they can make a ton of money

You can hardly make a living nowadays as a freelancer unless you're one of the top 1%. There are a few exceptions (sakimichanga, incase etc.) but you could argue they're in the top 1% when it comes to business skills..
>>
>>2677470
I could if I didn't have to work all day. And again, I can't quit because of my pride. I've sacrificed more than half my life to get where I am today. It's who I am at this point and I'll ride it out until it kills me.

>You can hardly make a living nowadays as a freelancer unless you're one of the top 1%. There are a few exceptions (sakimichanga, incase etc.) but you could argue they're in the top 1% when it comes to business skills..
Being a freelancer, doesn't mean being famous. There's tons of jobs to freelance, it's almost impossible not to make a living if you're "good". As in, companies know about you, not fans.
>>
>>2677473
>You can hardly make a living nowadays as a freelancer

Nah, not really. The problem with the art industry is that every wannabe artist thinks they are entitled to make a living regardless of the fact that they are vastly underqualified for any sort of professional work. They completely inflate this industry with an undesirable "workforce" that no one was going to hire to begin with. If you take out all the underqualified wannabe artists, then I'd say the top 50% can make a very comfortable living with freelancing.
>>
>>2677484
This is not true, at all.
>>
>>2677441

>degree in engineering as a backup
>do art since I enjoy it

When I hit that point OP I'll change things up.

Honestly I feel it's a lack of passion though if that's really killing you. Why not make a comic, or something you actually like doing with your skill. Even if you can't work on it all the time it'll be fun and let you do stuff you like.

If you want to get out and socialize there's meetups etc and plenty of life around you, if the issue is you need to work and go and have to do digital then just get a surface pro/ipad/companion.

You only end up in these situations if you're either bad or not even trying to help yourself.

>>2677484

Kind of curious what the definition of "wannabe" artist you have is. Like got an example of art you'de describe as wannabe? Because as is it feels there's plenty of people who can do great art that get shit all.
>>
>>2677486
>Because as is it feels there's plenty of people who can do great art that get shit all.
Just because you can do great art, doesn't mean everything else about you is great.
>>
>>2677486
the non depression anon here, i was actually gonna say the same thing. try doing some other kind of art, do commissions , do comics , do porn , if you are good you can make money doing that and have more free time depeneding on how good you are. light the fire back under your ass.
>>
>>2677464
I think you just don't like art. Like seriously? You get paid to draw. How fucking cool is that?
>>
>>2677487

True enough. I guess if you know fuck all about marketing yourself and your art then you're not going to get work, but honestly if your art is good enough to show for, you don't have to be much of a people person, just approach those who would be willing to take your work and say "hey I'm free lance. You need anything I'll do it".

>>2677488

I can only imagine it's because art's a passion to them and they lack the tact to extend it past business. If any person in their line of work is hating their time doing it, or even what they once had passion for they do more with it. Like if you do programming all day and get tired of it, and you always wanted to make a video game or something then you make a fucking video game. Your job should never eat up all waking hours of your day.
>>
>>2677441
I (and certainly many others) can easily draw 12 hours a day if I know what I want. The point is you should at least have an idea of what you want to do, where to apply that skill you're accumulating. I don't know why 99% of /ic/ is aiming to become a concept artist when there's hundreds of different things you could do with your classical artist training. Is it where the money is, or did people never actually think what they want and latched onto whatever was most prominent?
>>
>>2677500
>I don't know why 99% of /ic/ is aiming to become a concept artist
And I don't know why you think this either
>>
>>2677492
art is only enjoyable in the first year or so. after that, you start losing focus and it becomes a chore.
you try to think about business, but it wounds up eating you from inside.

I've given up on happiness in this world. Now all I want is "satisfaction"

Have you thought about streaming while you work? After a while you'll build a small community and have people to shoot the shit with while slogging.

Also ladies might dig streamers idk I've just always wanted to do it.

It's the same for every other profession. Doesn't matter what you do, if you want to be really good at something you need to put in this kind of hard work to reach that goal.

I live in Kroea and I'm around a lot of so called artists and designers. There are a ton that are mediocre and not motivated.

Unrelated I agree that a career as any type of artist is difficult. However, it's all about finding your niche. If you really love art than you'll do well.

Fucking crying about freelancing. Fuck off.

Geez, living rest of my life doing what I love AND earning money by that, yeah you right OP that sounds awful. I better drop the idea and look for 9-5 dead end corporate job to work my ass off for the next 50 years. Life's too short to waste after all, eh?
