Newfag to drawing here. Do you think my skills will get better by just taking requests in drawthreads or should I devote my time to focusing on learning techniques? Will I get better by just practicing in general or does it matter how you practice?

Newfag here, I think you can just take requests. I have been drawing random shit for several years and feel like I have seen improvement. Might be quicker, but not necessary.

being project oriented is the best course to get good fast. when you find something you can't solve, do studies until you can handle it better. this way you'll be at least a slight bit better after every work
