I am having a hard time learning how to construct heads and the human body. Any artists or tutorials you can recommend to learn from?
>>

My favorite - and one that a lot of people here like - is Figure Drawing: Design and Invention by Michael Hampton. A pdf of it turns up in a google search.

totally totally totally forget all these guidelines people draw, it's a fashion trend, it ruins sketches.

When you're drawing compare distances to each other aloud in your head, really try to make mental notes of where things are in comparison to one another.

Then try this at a life class or sketching people in cafes.

You can train yourself to judge distances by being acutely aware.
>>
>>2653678
Can someone verify this? I hate the idea of learning with those stupid guidelines. Cartoony shit like that is an eyesore to me.
>>
>>2653683
well buy a Rembrandt sketch book or Lucien Freud sketch book

they didn't leave cross hairs all over the page.

Look at the cover of the book, the n of Lucian is bit to the left of the last s of sketchbook's, and both make a line with the tail of the b in book,

see? by describing where these things are in our head, it helps to make notes of how to draw them as we see them

Go ahead and draw a human figure in an interesting pose from imagination without using any construction.

I'll be fucking waiting.

I just deleted my long post to what I was going to tell you because I am, quite frankly, tired of bestowing sensible knowledge that gets you anons here to think and then threads (like this one) go on a tiraid of how I'm right and you're wrong when you've been given very valuable advice in the very first post.

So yeah, I'll tell you what you want to hear

it's like when a solo musician counts "a 1 and a two and a 3 and a 4" before they play

it's unnecessary, but it's also ugly

It's where it's coming from

you have to do a line all across the eyes, then a line all down the nose then a round circle

it's a poorer sketch for it

Work through Steve Huston's book, OP. Then build on top of it with Michael Hampton's book. Then check out the Loomis books for information on how to place multiple figures in a scene and deal with composition. Then start memorizing muscle names and where they go whatnot.

>lazy, flat as fuck, and out of alignment. These doodles are not worthy of being held up as examples of any sort of ideal, I don't care who drew them

It's why this place is so resolutely rubbish

These posts don't like art but they post here all the time.

art is about emotion, you like measuring things with a ruler so you can hurt people.
>>
>>2653890
also check out the Reilly Method. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RmHOvmPJjE

Obviously the constructions learned in these books and in the Reilly method are not used for every drawing you do. You internalize them over time. Fall back on them if you need to.
>>
>>2653678
That's all great for just drawing what you see, but guide lines come in handy when drawing more complex figures and poses from imagination.

Can't you tell it's a fucking ink? Of course you can't put down construction lines when working with ink, same goes for the old masters' silverpoint sketches, their construction work has been lost (aside from da vinci, who did construction thumbnails before the actual painting) because graphite doesn't last centuries.

You should do both methods, because both train different skills.

I am a naturally skilled drawer and sculpter. In fact, in the 3rd grade i was able to accuratly draw a womans or mans figure at just about any position just like you are doing now. But not the same way. I was able to pic up a pencil and from memory just draw. I'm not bashing you techniques at drawing, but I have never understood why people need to use underlining to draw simple stuff. I was always able to draw what I see just how I see it, shading aswell. My technique is to look at what u want to draw, and imagine it 2D or flat, then draw it as you see it, also for shading, just add shadows and dark areas just how you see it. And then once you draw it once, u can draw it anytime without needing the object. Basically I am able to copy what I see and draw it how I see it.
>>
>>2654131
The only thing you've said is that the way you and I draw things is different. Just let it go at that. If it works for you, good on you, but that doesn't mean it will work as well for someone else.

Did you know that back in the day artists used to engrave their construction lines on the surfaces and THEN draw the final lines on top of them? That way, you couldn't see them and only see the final lines.
>>
>>2656425
That's interesting. I can't quite imagine it.

I read about how the artist would make a sketch that was agreed on, then make tiny holes along the lines and put charcoal through the holes to the canvas as a stencil.
