Hi /ic/
I was wondering if anyone could tell me the name for the painting technique where the majority of the image is built up of layers of small vertical strokes, rather than strokes that twist and curve, following the surface of the imaginary forms being depicted. It's sort of similar to pointillism, and I mostly see it in older artworks, I don't think many people use this technique anymore. Does anybody know what I'm talking about? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pic Unrelated, I cant think of any pieces offhand that utilize the technique I'm talking about, sorry.

Kinda like this, OP?

Very very close! The only difference is that the entirety of the piece would be composed of strokes going vertically, rather than in multiple directions. This piece has strokes going horizontally, vertically, diagonally, etc. Beautiful painting though.

Never heard of that, pointillism is the closest I can think off, look into neo-Impressionism and post-Impressionism

Do you mean vertical strokes the length of the canvas or shorter ones, like a drawn out pointilism?
>>
like this? Not sure what it's called I'm afraid

Thanks! I'll check those out.

Not the length of the canvas, they can be short lengths too, but yeah, basically stretched pointillism.

This is also really close, although this is a lot more modern than I would have expected. Another really nice piece. Seeing the lack of it here I'm starting to think I may have imagined this technique altogether.

I fucking love Jeremy Mann.

Jeremy Mann reminds me of that tacky impasto street art people buy when they travel around Europe. It's not as bad, but still that's what comes to mind when I see his stuff.
