>LOL: In Japan, are there communities that are comparable to PixelJoint, and what are the big differences?

>SYO: There are 2 major differences between Japanese pixelart and Pixeljoint’s. First, downsizing (sample above), editing and refining other people’s work is very popular. Skillful people like refining beginners pixel art for them to study and beginners develop their style by altering others’ skillful work. Of course, you first get permission from the artist before we alter his/her work.

>Secondly, it is very rare that Japanese people comment negatively, they usually just praise others. You may feel this custom is strange, but in spite of criticizing others we refine others' work.

Discuss /ic , why are we not more like the japanese art community when it comes to feedback and actually helping each other ?

because we are actually a meme board in disguise

It's because Japs talk shit about other people in private, not out in the open for all to see like Americans do.

It's a collectivist society.
>>

Most of the time when you give feedback or edits to an American they will discard it, make excuses, get angry, cry, etc. Special snowflake syndrome. Just look at Illustrat. Would you bother giving him edits?

My personal ideal is this
>Andrew Stanton: There's a difference between criticism and constructive criticism. With the latter, you're constructing at the same time that you're criticizing. You're building as you're breaking down, making new pieces to work with out of the stuff you've just ripped apart. That's an art form in itself. I always feel like whatever notes you're giving should inspire the recipient--like, 'How do I get that kid to want to redo his homework?' So, you've got to act like a teacher. Sometimes you talk about the problems in fifty different ways until you find that one sentence that you can see makes their eyes pop, as if they're thinking, 'Oh, I want to do it.' Instead of saying, 'The writing in this scene isn't good enough,' you say, 'Don't you want people to walk out of the theater and be quoting those lines?' It's more of a challenge. 'Isn't this what you want? I want that too!'

I think he was refering more about the refining and painting over someone's work rather than talking shit. I mean i've seen people actually painting over /beg stuff but those are rare and we need more people like these . Not people who just constantly spam with >loomis

lmfao western artists have these fuck-all egos that no one wants to deal with.

Common Amateur Bullshit:
>"5 minute quick sketch i did in my own style! trying out something new C&C h-heh."
>"I put a lot of effort in, but I really want you to think I didn't 1!"
>yeah that's my signature and watermark, please don't steal it m'kay??
>"I spent 80 days working on one image and I think it looks decent, but I'm going to pretend it's shit so I can get the pity-pussy."

Common Professional Bullshit:
>"5 minute lunch-break photorealistic study of the Sistine Chapel Ceiling. Feelin' a bit rusty h-heh."
>"I'm a try-hard, and everything I do is effortless!"
>Yep that's one layer, no undo lol"
>"I like to pretend I'm humble even though I think I'm god-tier."

Anyone who studies art knows it's hard as hell, people who think they can save face by pulling the 'wasn't even trying' card are the same exact people who won't listen to criticism.

It's like everybody here has "WataMote" Syndrome.

japs are both secretive and slow to adapt. this is why they shortcut so many things in art, and why they were so late to the cultural boom of "art that doesn't look like absolute shit".

>>it is very rare that Japanese people comment negatively, they usually just praise others
absolute load of crap.
just because you don't see it out in the open, doesn't mean they don't do it. every culture has negative thoughts, they just express them differently. there's a good reason why so many of japans amateur artists never share their work publicly.

>there's a good reason why so many of japans amateur artists never share their work publicly.
Yeah, it's called not being a self deluded ass who thinks his shit don't stink. The patience to improve what you do until you're ready to debut is in some ways infamous among Japanese and something almost unheard of in the west

If you think Japanese are as negative as westerners, compare the way Pixiv rating works to DA's. The average rating for pretty much anything on pixiv is 10/10, because their rating system is exclusively positive, you only add to a work's score, because of that most people who do rate something only bother to rate it 10/10. That is just one example, but it's more than you've got going besides obvious banalities

>hur dur you can't be completely positive everyone's negative sometimes
No shit Sherlock, but again, these aren't people who think their shit doesn't think. Same reason people don't put up shit art is the same reason people don't just give """critique""" left and right like they've got something to prove, because they know what fat lot of good it'll do: none.
