I love it but I don't like how sparse the shading is. There should definitely be a thicker shade under the hinge of the jaw, and the area between the cheek and the jaw doesn't make sense because there's no shadow and no volume as a consequence. There should be occlusion shadows there because the shapes are converging inwards. Maybe a heavier line would fix it.

I think the trees are okay, the little birds on top are shit (lack of detail, a simple V is 5 year old worthy). Also clouds are m'kay maybe go a little too far. Work on the ground and straight lines, colors are m'kay Also it seems a little too flat (lack of shadows)
>>
>>2623660
/ic/ is the wrong place to expect feedback anon, people here would rather let out their bad mood on other artists than criticize and improve
i think you should move on to a better art forum where people actually talk about their improving their skills
btw i like the painting , i just dont have a lot of traditional painting experience, so i cant really give super helpful feedback either

Lovely impressionist windmill (I'm guessing Mondrian inspired?) but the background trees on the right are too lively and make them look closer than they should as well as distract the eye from the main focus. I'd just replace them with empty space but if you want to keep them I suggest a greyer, bluer colour.
Either keep up the good work!

Fucking 10/10 anon, bonus points for having the background be the same shade as peanut butter. And don't knock yourself over the subject matter being "uninteresting", I honestly think it's really cool when artists focus all their attention on what others would usually just gloss over.

Umm every artist knows which is their best work. They know how they went up and down and up and down with each work, gradually improving.

This work that you posted is very good but I doubt it's yours. Show us a plethora of equally good works, since you have so many you can't pick which one.
>>
>>2622794
how large was the file that you worked?

>Umm every artist knows which is their best work
lmao no
>>
>>2623884
I have no idea which one is my best personally. I find it extremely hard to tell which pieces will be received well and which won't.

Basically I have no idea what you're talking about.
>>
>>2623894
Then prove it. Show us equally good works because you can't decide which is your best.

Something tells me that work is not yours and you are not a real artist.
>>
>>2623766
Finish something. Are sketchy work ups really your best work?
>>
>>2623901
>y-you're not a real artist!

stop it
>>

You must be able to decide which is your best regardless of other people's opinions or how well it is received. If you are an artist you would have strong opinions about the works you created.

Personally I don't care what others say about my work. I have strong opinions about my own works. I know which is my best, what represents the best in me, the works I spent 2 months on. You lack this dedication and attachment to your works, it seems.
>>
>>2623904
Sure I will stop and conclude that work is NOT YOURs. You fail to provide more works of similar style. End of discussion.
>>
>>2623906
I'm completely undedicated to my work once it's finished. I have a near obsession with it while I'm working on it, but grow bored of it quickly once it's finished and I've moved on to something new.

I never understood people clinging to their old pieces. Sure, I'll look back on my weak parts if I'm trying to improve something specific, but I often give my work away or pile it in a closet once it's done.
>>
>>2623903
Yes, unfortunately.
>>
>>2623915
Try finishing something. Quick studies are great (and super easy), but you'll never be able to create a refined final product if it's all you do.
>>
>>2623766

It looks like you spent a lot of time on the composition, values and colours, and those are pretty decent.

I would recommend focusing on the following aspects:

- Brushwork.
Unfortunately it's bad. I know you want to be loose and sketchy, but in that case you have to be concious and purposeful about it. Make it look loose and random but think hard about where and how to place strokes. You add scratches and squiggles that seem purposeless or are unclear and break your work. Secondly, there are a few spots where you have added outlines (some buidlings and pipes). That doesn't look good. Either work in shapes/forms or work with outlines. Mixing both works only really well when it is done with some idea behind it, for example characters are in outlines but not the environment.

- Rendering materials.
Basically everything is rendered the same way, so it all looks like it is the same material. Even the clouds. Only in the second picture you have something like water, though it looks a bit strange since it seems to reflect light that has no apparent source. Rendering materials in a good way doesn't mean you have to use a load of different brushes, for clouds, gritty ground, shiny stuff etc. You can still use a basic round brush. But it means that you have to think about light scattering, translucency, specularity, reflections/fresnel, refraction, etc.

- Design.
There is just no design. Randomly placed chains, random floating pipes and a bunch of spiky rocks is not design. Not only do I have the feeling I have seen this stuff in every single game that has a level in some kind of hellish environment, you add nothing new. It is less than the bare minimum. Also the shape language is boring, because it is the same everywhere. It's an endless repetition of spiky towers, spiky ruins, spiky rocks and spiky rocks with spikes on them. Boring.

It's all about visual storytelling. Composition, light, shape, colour, texture, etc. are all tools you use to express and support your idea. It doesn't matter if you're designing an object, like a gun, or a character, or an environment, you can apply the same techniques.

So, before you start, remind yourself that you are telling a story to some one else, and you want to tell that story as clearly and meaningful as possible.

Using your sketches as an example, here are some tips:

- It looks like a city environment has been demolished and overtaken by hellish demons or aliens. There are some ruins of skyscrapers here and there, but there's nothing that is easily recognizable as human. Something that expresses the terrifying destruction of human life and the total collapse of civilization. Maybe in the very first sketch the view of the big tower is from a half smashed bedroom or kitchen of a big appartment block, with charred human remains or objects scattered about.

- How did those hellish structures got there? Did they grow organically, or did they push out from the ground, or did they emerge from hell gates? It adds depth and realism to give some hints at how they are structured.

- In the other 2 sketches you show huge chains and pipes. Why are they there, what is their function? They are human constructs. Maybe make them look different if they were made by these hellish creatures, or, if the were indeed made by humans, make it look like those things were cannibalized from industrial sites and shipyards, etc. This too will create a story and add depth.

Basically, it is all about creating a story, thinking logically, and adding or removing elements to support and enhance it.

Sorry to disappoint, but all the watercolor textures I make, then scan and arrange behind a tight pencil drawing. When I did traditional watercolors, I would use a light table and put a sketch under a piece of watercolor paper and would paint on that, then work back in to it with pencil. It took a long time and was much less rewarding so a switched to a more familiar process

I suggest leaving here once you're starting to get traction with your progress after a few years. After a certain point you start to appreciate certain critics and disregard the rest as bullshit. Obviously if you're on a bad day you won't disregard anything and take it to heart

In my case I don't think anyone can be harsher with my work than I am. On the other hand I do traditional so I don't get comments like digital/concept/anime/porn/fantasy do so maybe this entire post is pointless

I didn't write that post, but I agree with it.

A note, though.

Visual design is more than 'My character is a nerd, so I need to give him glasses'. Visual communication, as the name suggests, is a two-way street. The artist has to have something to tell the viewer, but the viewer must be able to decipher and understand it. I think that ' reading an image' is a pretty good description. Someone looks at an image, 'reading' the characters, environment, colours, textures, lighting, composition, etc. and, adding everything together gets an accurate understanding of what the artist wanted to express.

An example: When looking at the character Hanzo I'd say that the dragon tattoo and tea flask are really very nice story touches, but they are not things that can be understood by viewers without knowledge of the backstory. The flask comes close, as the design looks appropriately old, but because it is shiny and metallic, with a modern belt attachment, it does not communicate so well. It is too similar to his slick, high-tech gear. To really drive home the message that Hanzo deeply cares for honour and tradition, I would have changed this tea flask for a more obvious old design, worn and patina'd, with old belt clasp, slighly dented after having been hit once or twice.

Man of /lit/ters here. I would like to try and develop some sort of appreciation for visual art (not that this thread, or indeed this board, is the place to do it), because so many of the poets whom I most admire had a great affinity with the plastic arts, as they were called back then. When I read a good poem or listen to a good piece of music, I have a reaction which is almost (or, sometimes, actually) physical; but when I see a painting, even one which I like, the most I can do is think that it's neat and then move on shortly after. It may be that my visual sensibility is simply underdeveloped, but I feel somewhat guilty about not really appreciating such a huge part of culture. I came to this thread to see what walking, talking 4channers are actually doing, and while I'm mostly unimpressed, I was still wondering if any of you are trying to become academic artists in the old sense, or are at all interested in the hierarchy of genres, etc. If any of you are interested in the more philosophical/aesthetical study of art, if you could point me to a resource that you think could help me develop an appreciation for serious art, I would greatly appreciate it. I especially wouldn't mind a resource that includes some explanation of academic technique, since I feel that if I have some basic knowledge of the creative process, appreciation would be easier. Of course, I can speak decent English, and so I have some idea of how literature is made, and I have some musical knowledge, so I have a vague idea of how music is made, but I have no knowledge of how art is made, and so cannot appreciate it. Sorry for the blog post, but I didn't want to make a new thread if I don't have to.

I'm also interested in being proactive in this regard, so if anyone would like to show me a piece they're proud of for me to write a poem to, I would be glad to have a concrete and original piece of inspiration on which to base a technical exercise. Don't expect anything very good, though.

For God's sake why is everyone from /lit/ so God damn pretenscious? Not even /sci/ is this insecure about their intelligence.

You can't get be taught how to like visual art. You grow to like/dislike certain types of visual art through life experience and shifting of tastes as you age. You probably think that physical paintings on a wall are boring for the same reason most people do: you've been spoiled by higher tech mediums your whole life like animation and video games. If you think that fine art has a higher cultural value than these mediums or something then try locking away your cell phone, TV, computer and Internet router and then go to an art gallery after a month or so.

I realize this is almost certainly a joke but, as nothing comes up on reverse image search, this may actually be your work, so if you're serious that you'd like me to attempt a poem about Adam Lanza with a circlet of roses, just let me know. I, too, have noticed that Lanza had quite a striking face, so I'm entertaining here the slim possibility that you just wanted to paint him after seeing that face everywhere. But basically, no, I'm not terribly inspired, because I consider something like this good for a startled laugh, but not so good for poetry (or at least, for the very melodramatic poetry that I prefer).

>>2634596

I write just the way I think on here, so any defects are purely natural. I thought artists were supposed to be champions of authenticity or something! But anyway, i would be very sad if there's no way to be taught how to love art the same way that you can be taught (or more accurately, teach yourself) how to love music or literature. But don't get me wrong: I'm as much of a luddite as you are, and am always trying to cut down on Internet time, except when gathering useful info on Wikipedia or whatever. I haven't played video games in several years, and hardly watch TV or movies. I also love going to art galleries; it's just that I don't feel that I do it for the right reasons, since I like the IDEA of looking at art or of being an art lover better than the actual art I'm seeing, which really isn't the way it is for me with music or literature. For example, I'm interested by this painting by Burne-Jones, but only because of the intellectual (or 'poetic') mystery behind it, or, in regards to the actual visuals, because I'm reminded of pretty women or of the the grandeur of Athens. I don't feel I appreciate the art IN ITSELF, the way that I, at moments, can with poetry or music. It doesn't send a shiver down my spine, even though I can say I like it. But if this is simply an innate fault of mine which learning can't fix, I understand.

>>
>>2634653

Quite the contrary, my good man: The Manza is rather TOO grounded for me; my tastes are more transcendental. You'll understand that writing a tasteful poem about a mass shooter in drag is a rather great task and, I'll concede, perhaps too great for an utter novitiate like myself.

What's the point of coming into a 'post your best work to date' thread, and openly admitting the piece of shit your posting only took a minute or two and you don't even really draw? Like who the fuck cares? Go to the beginner thread or some shit.

turns out redirecting all your art to managing a dumb doodle page and drawfagging for /vg/ for 3 years without actually making good art takes a toll on your skills and renders everything you do flat and generic

who knew?

>be taught how to love art
wanting to "love art" because you're in love with the idea of loving the arts is silly. its the reason why the other guy called you pretentious.

as for your issue: i think most modern people would have a hard time being impressed by the image you posted.
people from centuries ago were able to genuinely appreciate that because photography didn't exist and pieces like that were enough to get your imagination going. nowadays you'll need more than that.

at least here on /ic/, most people think of art as a craft. what they appreciate is technique and execution. maybe if you focus more on those parts you'll become able to appreciate art as the craft it is.

Well then, perhaps I just have the wrong standards. I prefer Romantic conceptions of art as something that transports you to another realm and metamorphoses you, etc. Of art as something more than craft. Still, do you know of any book on technique which comes from or includes the philosophical/aesthetic perspective?

we artist are actually very grounded in the world we live, which is why we can appreciate beauty in meaningless stuff

>something that transports you to another realm and metamorphoses
is, as you said, a romantic idea of artists created by non-artists because of how ''unsocial'' we tend to be, when in reality we just want to be left alone with our craft and not be interrupted

the abstract artists are helping this romantic idea grow, and they are usually looked down over here because their end game is different than ours but share the same title with us, which in the end creates false ideas about us. You might be more interested in abstract art, in which case you didn't find the right place to be discuss in.

>I like the IDEA of looking at art or of being an art lover better than the actual art I'm seeing, [...] I don't feel I appreciate the art IN ITSELF, the way that I, at moments, can with poetry or music. It doesn't send a shiver down my spine, even though I can say I like it. But if this is simply an innate fault of mine which learning can't fix, I understand.
I like you can put into words what you feel and think and I can say you definality can be taught to love art, since I too was attracted into it by an simple idea, which, in time, I turned it in a way of living. You need to ask yourself why you want to get into visual art (you are looking for art which can ''transports you to another realm and metamorphoses'', right? In my case it was the desire to be able to show others what I have in my mind) and then search for artists which do that thing though their art.

think of art as of writing and reading, when you were still learning to read you couldn't see no enjoyment in reading, but maybe the idea of being able to read was attracting you (or you just did it because you were forced to XD)

Indeed. It's almost like his face was a morphed digital image. But why would the Government need to invent someone's face?
