This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.
Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, uhhh, have fun!

Remember the words of our good friend Glen Vilppu: “No rules, just tools.”
>>2606771
friendly reminder that you're all not going to make it.
>"No rules, just tools"
Not true.
Unless you can draw entirely from imagination, your work is invalid 2bh.
Any retard can trace or use references.
WIP
I need to design some tattoos for his back. Basically, the idea is that he used to be a slave fighting in these gladiator-like pits, and like in Russia, each tattoo represents your sins. So one tattoo for each person he's killed in the pits basically.
Any ideas?
>>2606796
All artists use reference unless they've been pros for over a decade, and even then, they'll rely on reference from time to time. Shut up and get back to drawing.
>>2606802
all artists use reference. Pros for over decades use reference. Artists in their 80s use reference.
There are a few that don't, but they are by far the minority. So don't even bother being all "but xxxx doesn't use ref!"The fact remains that reference, even if they are live models as in leyendecker's case, is an artists best friend.
>>2606800
I think you've thought about this, but something that stacks up and together forms a nice pattern. How about a skull to which you add a snakes-cale for each person? How about just feathers? Tears? Knives? Columns with horizontal stripes?
>>2606809
That's what I said. But someone is bound to bring up Kim. Or those artists who draw the same thing over a million times without reference.
Anyone who draws knows that drawing without ref look meh, and has tons of errors looks bland, etc... Drawing using ref, looks friggin boss as fuck, and makes you feel proud of your own work.
The only people who try to push that who, "you suck if you use ref" are the same people who push "you'll never make it" and typically don't draw. If those people spent half as much time drawing as they spent shitposting, they'd have seen a noticeable improvement in their work already.
>>2606810
It's for a comic, so whatever it is, it needs to form a nice silhouette that's easy to draw during fight scenes. I know that one thing is key, the centerpiece of the tattoo will be something larger than the rest, and symbolic of the person who taught him how to fight. I thought that the idea that he was forced to kill people dear to him, like friends and such, during his years in the pits would make an interesting character trait. One thing is having your father figure die, another is being forced to kill your father figure in a brutal death match. And I'm interested in the sort of character you can write from that.
I think each tattoo should more or less be different, in a way representing the person he's killed or the fight itself. But they should all form part of a larger piece. I think more than anything, I need to think of what sort of figure I'm gonna have for the silhouette, and what the centerpiece will be, since those will be the most eyecatching. Everything else will stem from there.
>>2606771
who us the artist of the middle picture?
>>2606809
Some don't need references anymore because they have been studying from ref/life so much that now those references are in their head
>>2606796
You dare question Vilppu?

Understood, made a few other adjustments as well now that I was able to refresh my eyes a bit. Better?
And thank you, I post mainly at thdark.tumblr.com
>>2607385
A chibi version of a adult isn't typically drawn as being shorter, just with different proportions. The dangling legs make you look like a big toddler or a midget rather than a stylized version of yourself. I'm assuming you weren't actually born with dwarfism
>>2607335
man, I missed your work.
>>2606821
it could be just a snake, drawing the silhouette of the snake, depending on the design, might be easy to draw for fight scenes
you could make the snake half just outline, and the other half with scales and eyes and everything draw, with each scale being a person he killed, and for each dear person he killed it could be an eye. That means, he could end up with more than 2 eyes, it might make a interesting design.
>>2607335
Good to see you again, used to seeing you around 2014. Keep posting your work.
>>2607457
Hmm, that sounds interesting. I'll look into that. Thanks a bunch anon.

Are you ever civil? I assume you're this same enjoyable character from the last thread:

I'll bite.
Pic related is the high resolution comp. I was avoiding it because of theft issues I've run into in the past.
It is less baked then the headshot as mid-painting session I decided on just minimizing my work with this and moving on from it.
I came to that conclusion because clearly it's not portfolio worthy and no one offered any constructive comments or critiques to say otherwise.
I swear /IC/ was always bad, but I don't remember it being this level of useless and dickish.
Guess I'll go back to lurking reference and study threads while I work on getting gewd.

have you seen the bird's feet? use a ref.
Also, with that level of stylization, it's a bad idea to make the pokebird more "realistic". It's just awkward there.

for the guy in the last thread, I decided to show a bit of my construction method.
forgive me that I don't have a million lines for gridding, I just find that method hard to keep track of compared to this one. I build out planes for the shapes to rest in, then expand outward from their to get to depth.
>>2609302
>for the guy in the last thread, I decided to show a bit of my construction method.
hey you! well that's great
>forgive me that I don't have a million lines for gridding
it takes some time getting used to it frankly.
it helps to put them in different colors though (blue left VP, red right VP, or anything that works for you)
Why don't you make the lines thinner and with a ruler?
For the bg, you should draw it clear, not blurry, and then add some directional motion blur later.
now with colours
how do i properly set up the construction for a scene like this? is it necessary to overdo it?
I drew some stuff on notecards, mainly as exercises in preventing shaky hand syndrome
Used a pen so literally zero line weight unfortunately, feel free to critique and shit on them.

Some anons said that I should post this here. I know that something is wrong but I don't know what, maybe the whole structure of the face?
>>2609722
It looks too much like assigned male.
>>2609722
Flip it. Does it look like you wanted it to be? Figure out what is the problem and start practicing on getting better at what's troubling you.
>maybe the whole structure of the face
Yes.
>>2609722
from the thumbnail the most obvious issue is you have the light source mirrored in her eyes. her left eye shows light from the left side, her right eye shows light from the right side...together, these make her eye reflections look like where she's looking. So, she has this derp look going on. The other issue is the spacing of the eyes, and the lack of facial contour. Her left eye is at her temple, and her eyebrows have no ridge separation to her eyes. Not sure about the anime design, but her ear is very low in contrast to her eyes.
>>2609103
it works as a sketch. Looks solid, nothing seems off but you need to do more finished work if you want people to deconstruct where you are lacking. For example people can't critique on your clothing, anatomy, hands, feet in current stage. They are only indications of them but they aren't defined.
thoughts?? had a lot of trouble with arm holding the thing. on the right is my basic plan for colors, crits good there too but anatomy thoughts pls?
>>2609595
even with that view you managed to crop feet, wtf man
>>2604381
n-no.. you're lying!
>>2609319
uhhh... there's no motion blur, that's just a block out to pretty up later. I'm just building up the painting so all the crucial pieces are in place.
I slammed out the space section in at an angle cuz it gave a consistency for me to follow. Alot of stuff in the background is slanted at that angle anyway, so it's not really a big deal.
>>2608765

>>2606796
most artists use some sort of reference for things that they draw, and using references correctly is what makes you draw better, you fuck face
>>2610215
The title of the thread is "alt art / stylization" and plenty of people constantly post western stylized art. If your autism prevents you from posting here because you read the word "anime" somewhere in the OP, then I doubt anyone wants you here anyway.

>>2610855
some random suggestions.
keep in mind when value grouping to make the some areas stand out and to separate areas from another. squint to see how the values are perceived.
this time you also have the opportunity to play with shadows, maybe even strong ones if it's the midday sun (pic somewhat related). you can also add umbrellas and other props to help with the composition.
there may be room for improvement as long as you don't overdo it.
as for what the other anon said: he's right. your form is still weak and your pieces still often look flat. but that's a fundies thing. you need to study and sketch more if you want to get better here.
Working on something I'm going to turn into a webcomic/possible youtube animated series. waddaya guys think?

going better, now you really should group values, while picking a determined light source that actually casts shadows
>>2610775
don't be lazy with airbrush, that's almost pillowshading
you might want to use coloured lines, use a 75% dark in lighting layer mode so it just will make darker the color blocks behind it, will read better, atm it's pretty messy.
Line weight do not help make it readable.
Anatomy and forms are correct but it's done weirdly, feels traced

expand your canvas. it looks like youre trying to cram her figure in that box and it looks off because of it.
imo it helps to sketch out the entire figure and THEN crop. do so on a canvas way larger than you need to (in ratio to the sketch, not necessarily large dimensions).
id work on this more but ive got commissions ive been putting off. maybe ill clean the lines later.
>>2611356
the face is in a different direction than the head as a whole is facing

making a ship actually look big is way harder than I ever expected. I've long since stopped over-designing shit so now I'm having to remember how to just spew detail to make this actually look big :/
>>2611824
the larger something is the more naturalistic it will appear and the further away from each other your perspective vanishing points will be.
so i'm working on line confidence thanks to some /ic/ bro's guidance
feels like i have to relearn everything but ok
>>2611852
It's not line confidence if you're spamming ctrl+z every 7 seconds.
Got inspired to do some more spaghetti western-y, steampunk designs.
>>2611853
ok let's call it "avoid chicken scratching"
>>2611855
That's fine, but that still doesn't dismiss the fact that you avoid chicken scratching with relying heavily on your keyboard shortcut. In the end all you're doing is building muscle memory by drawing moes all the time that you'll fool yourself into thinking you've cured chicken scratching when all you really have done is built up a neurological pattern of doing the same thing over and over that your confidence to do that one thing helps you avoid petting your lines for that one specific subject matter.
If you're cool with that then that's totally ok. But you'll quickly come to the realization of how fucked you are if you attempt to draw anything else with line confidence. You build confidence with your line by practicing basic warm-ups and form. Doing that you can do anything with confidence, digital or not.
>>2611854

>>2611777
I am not an expert but her torso looks like it's bent at a 90 degree angle. did you use a reference pic?
also did you intend for her thighs and hips to be twice the size of her torso? she basically has alien proportions as it stands

I see how you would have made the line of the top of the model's back no longer visible to account for the extra height given by your girl being on her fingertips and not the flat of her palms. hm. if you get down on the floor and do it yourself, holding torso upright as possible like that you'll feel in your spine how unnatural a position it is for a person to hold on her fingertips. so it's difficult to judge. maybe a more advanced anon than me will be able to say

Know how some people have appealing aspects of their art but some glaring flaws, then they try to fix said flaw but in the process lose all the appealing aspects of their original drawing style? This is one of those examples.
The left has it's flaws but there is something appealing about the line work and shading/grey coloring. The right looks more traditional anime style but it lost the good shit from the old style.
Find a balance and try mixing the two.

How artists who don't study anatomy draw cute and simple like this? Some kind of talent? What the secret?
>>2612217
If you draw enough bodies, you are gonna improve. Just because they don't sit and a room and draw and dissect corpses, it doesn't mean they don't study anatomy.
>>2612244
>it doesn't mean they don't study anatomy.
I know that Pops doesn't study anatomy because he's фaгит.

Don't be a jerk. aasg =/= I don't study
>fucking eevee which doesn't exist
that doesn't mean it would have a blob for a broken wonky skeleton
>what are rabbits what are pomeranians what are other small mammals
You need to work on getting the body right before you add a jacket.
>>2611951
Grow a thick skin and a brain or gtfo. You wouldn't be getting this shit if you weren't being such a little bitch on top of being retarded.
The fact that you think you don't need anatomical knowledge/fundies because it's aasg and that things from imagination don't have underlying fundamentals just shows how incredibly retarded you are. Seriously do the world a huge favor and kys.
>>2612162
Thank you. Necks do give me a bunch of trouble.
>>2612217
Cute referenses

is that merc_wip's face on the screen
>>2612217
>What the secret?
Draw a lot and copy a lot
Any advice for this piece?
>>2612579
the perspective underneath of the hat, along the front of the head, seems out of whack. it looks weird because it's on a different angle to the lines surrounding it (the building behind it and also the mouth).
if the hat looked more visibly crooked on the head it would work, but the rest of it looks perfectly centered so it's confusing to look at.
also in the final version, will the smoke only be going behind the flag, and not in front?
nice idea btw. liking the color choices. would love to see it with some colored lines as well.
>>2612613
>also in the final version, will the smoke only be going behind the flag, and not in front?
you mean the pseudo-transparency? I'm not sure, it's an "accident" due to painting with a not fully opaque brush; in principle flags can be partly transparent, but I guess it would be better if it was opaque?
Thanks for the cap tip!
Is the linework not insufferable? It's a bit shitty because it's a scan, but I'm hesitating to continue like that for the next illustrations.
Sorry I forgot to resize btw...
while we're on the topic of perspective, do you guys know of any decent tutorials on fish-eye perspective?
>>2612579
Have the bear stand straight up instead of that angle which creates an unpleasant tangent with the building and makes the flag the primary focal point instead of the secondary
>>2612283
its all in the wrist!
arm, and shoulder.
Little drawing that came out nice
>>2611783
Cute hamakaze bro
>>2612217
They've studied anatomy so much that they know how to bend it to their advantage.
>>2613018
crazy good stuff. looks like how my depression and anxiety feel.
>>2613020
thank you!
>>2613018
Nice filter.
>>2611244
babuhands
destroy my crappy hand Anons
>>2613050
mouth placed too high to be aesthetically pleasing.
love the hat. it has real weight to it.
hand looks like it's digging in real good. hope to see variant with blood running down her arm.
overall impression: study basic forms. few anatomical landmarks are placed correctly.
>>2612067
he hasn't studied anything
Is studying anime all you need to do to switch to that style?
>>2613060
it seems clear that he or she has at least studied anime faces.
>>2613046
it looks like that photoshop filer?
>>2613062
I've never studied anime and I can draw animu, you just need fundies, to get close to a style you just need a collage of anime styles you fucking want to take inspiration from (not copying)
this is also the proccedure to do anatomy properly, or draw seriously anything else
oops i forgot the pic the first time
can someone tell me if anything in this looks wrong and if there's anything i can add?
anatomy isn't that big a deal because i'm going to be 3d modelling it anyway.
>inb4 feet and hands
i have to go borrow someone's shoes as a ref before i do the feet and i haven't worked out whether i want to do something with the hands yet
rough colour
>>2613106
>I've never studied anime and I can draw animu
Post some animu
>>2613062
Don't listen to that other anon, study anime and really work on super clean gestures. Weebshit is dependent on pretty, elegant lines- copy stuff you like and absorb the styles the best you can til it sticks.
>>2613319
>I, for one, welcome our smug, non-giant loli overlords
Are those Mantine and a Kingdra in the background? Typical Johto baby.
I went mad with colors, does it make sense?
Opinions? Criticism? Suggestions?
>>2613441
no.
too dark
too reddish
>>2606800
Tattoos are cool and all, but you have a serious case of muscle constipation drawing. Stop learning from western superhero comics and pick up Proko or Hampton before it's no longer treatable.
why is it that cell shading is appealing to do but in the end its not anything impressive? Not to sound pretentious but after this piece I can only feel like I have a hunger to change how I draw entirely, more realistically in search of something I suppose. I think it has a 'cool' vibe or whatever but really shouldn't all art be beautiful? Am I crazy? Is drawing this stuff meaningless?
>>2613540
maybe you wouldn't hunger to do better if you actually cell shaded better
look at that shoulder its flat as a pancake, this ugly girl has no bones
>>2613540
-stronger drawing will help with cel shading.
-good range/spread of value helps as well.
-shadow shapes are also a big help.
you failed at all three, so yeah.
with those three factors alone you can get a fairly wholistic coloring. if you then just paint or airbrush a little more, you'll get even better results.
thoughts?
>>2613848
i like the last pose and the skinny jeans. the shoes rock, really good, everything else is a little off, but i see its just a quick sketch out! i wanna see more fleshed out versions of Nolt!
>>2613446
the nose mouth is kinda uhh... different. bad foreshortening on the right arm, legs\feet are not there ore hes doing a dance? the perspective is nice, it looks like he's actually standing on the square! do some more work, it looks like you spent 5 minutes on the thing!!!
>>2613121
it feels like the legs are to small or the torso is to long, but that could just be me! looks pretty good other than that, maybe the shoulders are to close to the body?
>>2612890
i like the foreshortening on the left arm, good shit, reminds me of old batman comics!
>>2612320
good sketch, finish it! heads i lil bit too big for the body, unless thats what you are going for? doesn't really take away from the sketch.
>>2613888
Oh thanks. This is how it looks now.
I guess I should explain that kid is standing on water and the reflection supposed to be a reflection of a different kid looking down (towards the viewer) and a monster behind him. I just assume it's kind of hard to see because it's just a sketch yet
>>2606771
i think this is the right place to post this?
I have been trying to get back into art after a few year absence, this is me just trying to draw and shit. I'm not really sure if i should finish it, its still a pretty early W.I.P!
sorry for the shitty phone pic.
w-what if there was a college au where juri was really shy and anxious and chunners was a really dominant & popular girl a-and instead of hating each other they kinda secretly like had crushes on each other
j-just for laughs ha ha
>>2613848
really good imo, love the angularity, gettin mad jsr/motorcity/ronald wimberly/daisuke nakayama vibes along with a few other artists i can feel in your work, it's a very pleasing combination yet still very original/unique
>>2613913
sorry resize and cropped off the top for now.
>>2613885
Yeah i see where you are coming. Also here i have more.
>>2613933
I can see where you made the those connections. Thank you!
>>2613933
oh shit, apologies, that sketch got fucked by jpg compression >:c
I think it came out ok
>>2613947
it looks like nolt! nice consistency!
Made a demon man beast.
I really want to get away from using linework to create form in my art an depend more on the rendering process and lighting to actually bring about form. I really like the way some artist like Ovopack render and this obviously comes from much mileage, and studies, but what's a good way towards this goal? Should I try rendering from roughs and reference more, and just do studies? This is probably more a /beg/ question than anything so I apologize.
Also should I stop using MS5 and instead use Photoshop for this? MS5 is less taxing on my CPU, but I find it's really only more beneficial for its stabilization and rendering doesn't ever really come out as nice. (also quick commands on PS don't work for me)
>>2613991
That's really hard to read.
>>2613898
thanks, was going for a silver age look.
warm up drawing that I like.
i changed the sleeves and did the shoes (which are too small to detail unfortunately)
>>2613895
fixed them
>>2614222
fuck i forgot the picture again
drew some anime figures (thanks wonfest) to get a better sense of 3d (and proportions) in anime style
the only one I like here is the top right
>>2613952
was gonna ask you for your blog etc but then twitter stepped in and recommended one of your posts, spooky
>>2613991
i think its hard to read because your line weight is sporadic, like when the legs meet the bat and the arm its kinda hard to make things out
>>2612320
This is great
>>2611398
lsu? another LA drawer here? yippee
