You spend hours. sometimes days on a piece for what?
Just so people can look at it for 5 minutes, then forget about it?
>>
5 minutes is pretty generous; I doubt I look at even the most complex pieces for more than 30 seconds, but stuff I like I'll revisit again and again.
>>
With the hope that it will impact few people and leave a delicate mark in their mind.
>>
Because I enjoy drawing.
>>
>>2604894
No, I do it so when its finished I can watch it for months with a bitter face thinking how much shit I am.
>>
>>2604894
I think you are underestimating how far a single glance at art can go.
>>
>>2604914
This.
>>
>>2604894
even if the piece burned to ash right after I completed it, I have still advanced my skills, and will be more experienced the next time I create a piece. and it takes years of these experiences to make a living as an artist or a name for oneself.

also get a fucking show, it'll be up in a gallery for weeks or months.

If you want to share work with as many people as you can, then you need to put in even more work to do so. Most artists think it's okay to throw it up one place online and just forget about it. This is totally wrong and will get you nowhere.

When you complete high quality work, you should try and take it on "tour" as much as you can. Tumblr has many, many different larger blogs that accept submissions, and there is no reason to not submit to every single one. You can share your work multiple times, perhaps showing a detail in the next post. You can post on Reddit - I've reached the front page of /r/gaming twice and it brought in ~500 followers and several print sales each time. You can post that work to your portfolio website, and use it to try and pitch to prospects with for commissioned work. You can use that work for a promo postcard run to also mail to potential clients. You can take it and post it on the multiple Print-on-Demand sites online and make a few sales. You can email art blogs and see if they would want to feature you and your work.

These are just a few examples of how a piece can last a bit longer before falling into obscurity. The more similar and quality work you make and the more effort you get into getting new fans, then the more longevity your entire portfolio will have.

This

These posts are never going to kill the fact that I like drawing, yet I keep seeing theme popping up in /ic from time to time/

Why bother
>>
>>2604894
See op, that's why most of IC never makes it. You're more in love with the idea of making art rather than actually doing the work to make art. You just want to make art to impress people.

If you're making art just so other people can look at it can give you approval you might as well go find another hobby or job. You're never going to have the drive or motivation to stick with it long enough to "get gud".
>>
>>2604929
You forget that once someone sees a picture you drew once on one page, they probably don't want to look at it again unless is pornographic and aren't going to change their minds just because you have the same picture posted on twitter/facebook.
>>
>>2604937
All artists crave validation. There is not a single one that only makes art for art sake.
>>
>>2604940
My post was more detailing ways you can cast a wider net with your work, rather than worrying about something like what you described.
>>
>>2604943
Validation feels great, sure. One of the best feelings in the world. But I will still draw even if no one sees the end result of it.
>>
I think about that sometimes. Atleast if you make music, people will listen to it over and over again for years if they like it.
>>
Just like comics/ manga the artist probably spent hours on that one page and people just flip it in less than a minute.

Does that stop them? no
>>
>>2604894

Five minutes? Some people draw porn which I glance at for like 1 second before thinking "meh, just some generic dickgirl crap"

On the other side, a few porn artists have drawn things which made me stare at for a good couple minutes, enjoying the perversion of their corrupted minds.
>>
>>2604894
I do it because I get paid for it.
>>
>>2604894
Well. What the fuck else are you gonna do with your time? Watch TV?
>>
>>2604894
Fuck off. You're clearly someone that only found this board through the banner contest.

We don't draw solely to show off, any moron would know that.
>>
I'm keeping my favorite pics on a hard drive and revisit them from time to time. For years. Enjoying the details, the mood, etc. Can sometimes spend a whole day just lookings at pics

my nigga

Having thousands of strangers perusing your work for 5 seconds in their daily ritual of internet procrastination is wholly unfulfilling.

What I want to create:
- something worthy to have hanging on the wall in a central place for people that I respect
- something that inspires great people
- something that challenges you and wakes you up
>>
Anyone else here just not have that niche that defines them? Any ideas on how to stick to just one or a few things so one can have a concise portfolio and routine?
>>
>>2604894
> one person looks at it for 5 minutes
> 10 people look at it 5 minutes each = 50 minutes
> 1000 people look at it for 5 minutes each = 5000 minutes

????
op are you retarded
>>
>>2608809
That's being quite generous since this only applies if you are good enough to even get that kind of exposure. On Deviantart for example, you can track how many people look at your drawing a day. If you are some nobody, you won't get past 2 views a week. And they are just passing glances that last seconds, not minutes.
>>
>>2608264
Feels good to go through your collections of pics and absorb them for hours. I spend hours practicing so that one day I'll be able to make stuff that other autists will look at over and over for inspiration.
>>
>>2604894
Yes. You're right.

Quit art now and regret all the time you've wasted.
>>
>>2604943
>There is not a single one that only makes art for art sake.

Well don't be dumb. They're rare, sure, and most of the people on /ic/ who pretend they're 'above that' aren't, but they do exist.

Self-improvement is fun and builds character, and art so far is my favorite undertaking where it takes perseverance to get good but also feels very rewarding when you've noticeably improved.

I enjoy learning. The hope that others like what I produce just adds another level of satisfaction - I do like getting followers on tumblr and stuff but if that was all that mattered I could just reblog tumblrina shit for a fraction of the effort.
>>
I want to get good at something and realise some ideas I have. I've never been good at any hobby so I want to prove myself wrong.

The only reason I would seek approval from other people is to improve or know that I have reached my goal. I don't care for fame or money in terms of art. Only the pleasure of looking back later in life and knowing I created something cool.
>>
>>2604894

My art gets reposted at times on other boards. I find that rewarding in of itself, hardly forgotten.
>>
>>2608913
Same here! It always blows my mind when I see it happen.
>>
Isnt that the same as a short youtube video, though? hell, commercials are way more expensive and take more time than an art piece and they don't last half of it.
