Started a illustration project and managed to render it pretty well, but then learned here that I really suck at composition, so I watched a bunch of videos, read some articles and tried doing a few thumbnails.

Thanks! I'll keep it in mind, in fact I just checked the values after posting it (and saw that they need a bit of work).

I like your things, but I feel like you should try to finish them more.
Everything is so loose, like This should be a thumb for a real painting.

The textures are pretty cool, but you should use them where they make sense. For example those square shapes for sand seem out of place.

You may have realized this already but like the other anon said, your values are holding you back. If you were to lighten the sky quite a lot you'd give yourself much more value range to work with on the structure and sand. In general, the sky should always be a few shades lighter than anything else in the picture. Right now your sand is brighter than most of the sky and it creates this weird artificial look to everything.

Nice colors, nice illustration in general, but shit anatomy that reeks of symbol drawing.
You should also improve the rendering of the wings; either in a stylized or realistic way, doesn't matter, but now it looks amateurish/lazy.
If you improve the two points (anatomy...) it could be a really good illustration. Don't be discouraged if it sounds harsh.

I very like the concept and you trying to use visuals to add to narrative and composition.

That being said, there's few things I don't understand. Why one hand is in skin tone not close at all to the white of the torso? With black it works because you can descent into it from any color, but that skin tone on other hand is major clash. Also edges of color with background are too sharp. I'd redo the hand with something close to white-blue maybe, like on the wing.

Pink crosses/swords are nice trick to guide the eye, but they don't meet in one point and viewer is confused about perspective and arrangement of them. I'd rework angles at which those swords are placed for quick fix.

There's also something about legs that I can't pinpoint. Maybe how they are placed in regards to pelvis. Idk, maybe if they'd be raised an bend a bit there would be more 3D and dynamics to gesture, but I'm not sure.

Overall I like it much, but there are issues that are major clash to the eye. Also would like to see it polished for few hours more, like face and those legs.

Even knowing what she (doesn't look like a she btw) is doing, I don't see it. I would have her holding a feather in her right hand like she just plucked it from her left wing, with some more feathers floating around. If she's pulling off a lot, have a frayed section on her wing.

Blockout the basic forms of the skull in the desired perspective. No details, no colors just focus on the forms looking right.
Work on this the hardest.
Next you think of the skin around the mouth. Where do the muscles tug on it, how does it wrap around the skull, where are the wrinkles.

i agree with this anon, the foreshortening and pose needs to be improved. like you have a lot of good stuff going on in the torso, but the pose has no movement and the foreshortening just looks like stumpy limbs. its really awkward that his torso is facing straight, but with one leg swung significantly back, in the photo you posted of the girl with her limbs foreshortened, she is leaning forward to counter balance the leg that is behind her. my advice would be to re evaluate the pose, and continue to practice foreshortening.

since im nitpicking this hard on the file name i guess im obligated to crit lol. i would reccomend using less black to show darker calues. even metal has varied hues from blue to green to red, and especially in the face try to avoid black, because it makes figures look very corpse like. i do like your use of the yellow to red to brown in the skin tone however. just continue to work on pushing your values. the best rendered part of this piece are the pipes on the helmet of the suit imo, the worst would be the shoulders and neck.

The composition looks solid, I don't think there's much you can do without completely changing your camera angle or something similar that'd involve redrawing the whole thing.

Putting in a background and some foreground elements will help it look more dynamic once you get around to it.

I hope you don't mind the redline. I tried to work out why the foreshortening doesn't feel right. I think it's because a foreshortened object needs to be accompanied by a relative increase in scale. I increased the scale of the hand and the spear head and I altered the direction of the spear to be the same perspective as your reference to make the foreshortening more apparent.

Haven't drawn anything in a month. The shading looks like ass right now, but that's probably due to it being unfinished. Also I went full retard and positioned the bass in such a way that there's probably no way for her to hold it without her right arm looking broken (at least not at my ablility level).

I'm not him, but to spell things a bit more clearly for you: "taking a style" is copying a style. What you do is not "inspiration", it's something an algorithm can do (check the neural network that do that, it's cool). Which is, in itself, not bad at all, it's just a master study with one more layer of difficulty.

The other thing that might be bothering him is that you're copying it at a superficial level without really understanding it. Which is, again, fine, if you don't start pretending "i am grate artisit rispect plz".

And last thing is that style looks a lot like a way to hide lacking fundamentals, which shows. It's ok, we are all learning, but stop with the retarded attitude.

You're not far off, you just need to work on your joints. That should be a focus. Really learn how the arms/legs/shoulders etc bend and how the muscles operate around those areas. You can have all the knowlege in the world about how the muscles of a torso or a forearm work but if you don't know how to draw a joint that looks like it's not going to break at the slightest touch you've wasted your time.

I've recently started to widen the scope of thought in my creative process.

I used to just think about the shapes
>(draw the nose, the hand goes there, five fingers, etc.)

now I'm trying to think in terms of the scene.

It's a lot more mentally taxing but i think i'm onto something..

My theory is that if i can get used to drawing with a wider scope of thought, then i can crank out elaborate scenes much faster, with the end result being able to crank out something elaborate without straining myself.

Proportions of upper body are fucked in regards to legs.

Perspective is bigger problem though - you even wanted to desperately fix it and this is why your hands look really bad.

Work out on perspective and see anatomy of a joint between shoulders and arms because they simply don't connect in your drawing.

So generally - draw a lot of arms but in perspective. Try those exercises where you draw flipped view or rotated one.

Hmm, checked your blog, I've rarely seen somebody put out things that look stellar and things that look really shit.

I really loved the girl above the lotus thing you did. It's fantastic.

This thing on the other hand look incredibly amateurish. Like nothing is right. You should probably filter out the bad things, it dramatically lowers how good you seem to be.

Yeah, that's what I feel like right now. Probably got to do something with a personal hiatus I'm in and I can't invest a lot of thought into my artwork because I'm kinda distracted.

You're not making progress very fast.
But worse, I feel that v3 looked better than v5, it seemed to have more potential because your rendering is quite weak.

But before all that you should start over the buildings and things in proper perspective. Like the car in the front, it looks horrible. But all buildings look incorrect.

That said, I like the comp, even if it feels a bit cramped, it could be a great piece.

Don't forget that your portfolio is only as good as the worst piece it contains. This is fine if you post something like this on /ic/, just don't post it on your blog/watermark it. Or have a second one for practice.

Well, I just logged into dA again and the artwork was received better than the majority my other stuff. I'm really confused now about where that came from. Doesn't change the problem, though and no, you weren't too harsh. I really took it seriously as an advice and I think you're right.
I'm in a very troubled state these days and it made me think that I maybe have to make a change how I approach my art. And who I am doing this for.

I don't think you know but you red-pilled me today and it is good you did.

Try to give some space to the buildings. Push things a bit farther and pay close attention to atmospheric perspective.
Be careful with for example the size of the tree on the turtle, bigger than an entire castle.

You can also push the colors and values a bit.
