Do people not like cartoony art anymore? Did people ever?

I have a couple of favorite artists and I noticed, even if it's original character and not fanart stuff, certain styles do well. Anything that looks anime-ish, Disney-ish, chibis, that very modern-day webcomic look, those all well. But when an artist draws really exaggerated cartoony work, John K or Ed Edd n Eddy type stuff, nobody really flocks to it.

I'm thinking of people like Themrock who have been drawing for a lot longer and have been active online for awhile and still have less followers than someone like Natasha Allegri.

In animation?. It looks pretty neat, I still watch some old animation from time to time.
In image, static?. meh. I don't hate it, I even followed some artists that made stuff like that when I used DA, but while i like it, it isn't something I actively search while searching for art, or something I would make.
>>
honestly it's just how attractive the style is

the reason anime and disney stuff do so well is because it's concentrated appeal; the average person finds it good-looking and wants to see more. cartoon style works well in animation because it's expressive, and statically it can be cool if you can appreciate the stylization and expressiveness, but for the bulk of the internet (i.e. getting a lot of fans) they don't give a shit about expressiveness. they want to look at things that they think is pretty.

This. I've had plebs say to me American cartoon styles are ugly. Mostly everyone wants wholesome cal arts cuteness or anime.

Basically you gotta make things fuckable. Not that I have any kind of following but it's just what I've noticed. I think only stoners and weird types like the kind you find on 4chan appreciate cartoon styles.

i didnt appreciate it until i cracked open a book that showed how the animators back then designed the characters. honestly pretty fucking crazy. its just too bad they dont fit in with the styles of today, and are still associated with grain. its funny how people as a whole can just drop a trend just like that.

Man I grew up on anime and never really grew up on John K or elastic/expressive and distinctly American cartoon styles. Nowadays after I drawing more I can see how amazing it is and now I actively collect that type of stuff and try to integrate its lessons in my own art.

Appreciation of the style will come back, but in unfamiliar and novel forms. You'll just have to see its undercurrent. Underneath the mainstream obsession with 'cute' and 'sexy'. An example is a hyped up 2d bullet hell game coming out soon called Cuphead.

Yep. These gave birth to the furries we know and love today

If I don't want to fuck your girl characters then your style is bad.
>>
>>2546733
A style is only bad if it doesn't fulfill its purpose. If it's porn whose style is meant to give you boners, then sure, it's bad.
If the style is developed to underscore central themes of a story and elicit a feeling then it's a success.

Save that zinc and lecithin. There's more to the world than what's in your pants.

It'll come back though, things come and go in cycles and eventually people are gonna get tired of moe/cuteness. I hope this generation can come up with some cool stuff soon.

Is grain the texture of the films from way back? I love that shit. I know everyone has different tastes but how can you not appreciate that feel? Not saying you don't but a lot of people I know who are into anime/cartoons have told me that's the reason they can't watch anything from before 99. It's just baffling.

>>2546695
It was a different time, anon. Could we really see this in a modern cartoon? I can read the emotionally charged tweets of "sexual objectification/toxic stereotyping/bimbofication" already. There's sexy characters in adult cartoons yeah but they don't move like this.

If we consider history, the Preston Blair style was popular between 40's - 50's. Then UPA/Hannah Barbara dominated 60's - 70's. Then we had toy production cartoons that were trying to be as detailed as possible in the 80's with He-Man and Jem. The style made an emergence again the 90's, then fell apart by the time 2000 hit.

So we have roughly 20 - 30 years to go before the Preston Blair inspires anyone again.
