Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

That paragraph didn't explain dicks. Just because you don't draw certain lines to create depth doesn't mean it's going to come out looking like the image on the right. If it were that easy, everyone would be drawing like that artist and no one would need any further explanation than a few sentences to achieve that. The last line sums it up perfectly, go play expert somewhere else.

Double check the proportions, like the jaw looks a bit small, or maybe the features need some moving about slightly.

Biggest problem is that the forms are reading very flat. Rather than outlining the lips with lines and having them look very 2d, how can you show the forms of the lips and how they wrap the tooth cylinder? What about the eyes, you don't show any of the structures around them in the socket. And the bridge of the nose has those lines which read really poorly.

It's great that you are trying it without ref, but maybe at this stage find some photos and try to fix the mistakes you've made and see how much further you can take it.

>>
>>2544198
Pay more attention to the angle of things. Like picture imaginary vertical or horizontal lines, and compare what the angles of the ref are next to those imaginary lines. Take the jaw for example, if you put an imaginary horizontal line there it lines up very well with the jaw on your painting but on the ref it's like a 30 degree angle or something. You need to do this for every angle and every relationship between landmarks.

I'd like to, but do you ever just sort of fall into a rut with no inspiration, and if you find inspiration, you don't have the practice to put it to use and researching until you lose said inspiration?
I guess sort of like that. Also, I'll be 21 in a few months.
>>
>>2544273
No, i never fall into ruts. Inspiration is for people who don't want to do this for a living. Motivation is for cowards who would rather do anything other than art. That shit is just an excuse to not work and play video games while you "find yourself", complete garbage. I don't even draw what I enjoy anymore, it's all studying so I can one day draw what I want instead of fundies. What do you do to pay your bills?
>>
I'm going to make it. I am noticing a lot of improvement even if I still have trouble with noses and ears. I am grasping drawing what I see rather than what I think I see. I don't have a picture yet since I am on my phone and it would be too big.

I DON'T want to draw for a living.. I do it for fun, but most of the time on here you only see people saying drawing as a career makes it horrible, so they /can't/ draw for fun.
I don't know where all this finding yourself shit is from. It's simply not fun without the occasional desire to actually draw. Then actually doing it and seeing how far I've fallen just crushes whatever motivation I had to do it in the first place. I was actually coming here looking for incentive.

Not that guy. Just a hobby. I have people beg me for stuff all the time but I hate taking commissions because the obligation kills the feeling. Just draw things that you like even if they are doodles. I was feeling just like you. Then I stopped making promises to myself to get better and instead just focus on drawing every day. Some days it's total shit but even if it is shit I still made my goal.
>>
>>2543803

>>2544300
Yeah mate, my friend asked me to do a commission for him. I didn't want to take money for it, but he insisted.. I gave a go, ended up taking like 6 hours to make a shitty doodle, re did it, messy shitty doodle, etc...
and this was when I was slightly okay at drawing.

Glad to hear you got through it though. Any tips on what I should familiarize myself with? (besides the obvious Loomis)

I've been messing around with "design doll" lately. You could try giving that a go. It's a free program that lets you pose a 3d model. I've been using it for a lot of my drawings.

Also I see in that last picture you drew you were trying to render over white. That has always been a pain in the ass for me. Try drawing over a lite-medium gray. It's much easier to pull out your image with highlights as opposed to carving it with darks. That's why I love drawing on toned-gray paper.

>>
>>2544370
>tfw doesn't use piratebay anymore because scared of viruses
>>
>>2544375
Use trusted uploaders.
If a torrent has 1930542856 seeders, and no fancy symbol next to their user name... then it's most likely a trap.
>>
>>2544385
Not really into torrenting. Isn't having a lot of seeders mean a lot of people are downloading it? So it must be legit?
>>
>>2544491
It's possible to fake those numbers to lure people into downloading.

All you need to do is take a little time looking around. Check to see if the filesize seems right. Is there a description, does the torrent have instructions regarding the crack? Read comments, check the users other uploads. I would consider anywhere between 0-200 seeders to be normal for software. TV shows I only ever download from ettv.

what
>>
>>2544513
Cut a piece of paper to 10cm (or whatever, doesn't really matter), move it to 45 degrees, find the length of it, apply the formula.

Easiest way to do things is to make a physical copy and adjust it how you need it.
>>
If I loathe doing the fundamentals exercises on drawabox, does that mean I'll never make it as an artist? I'd love to be able to draw but can't concentrate on the first exercise with all the lines.
>>
>>2544506
In cabinet projection, the receding line is 1/2 of the true length. So in your case 14 cm.

>>

No, fundamental exercises are not entirely enjoyable but are necessary. In between studies, you should do some fun work i.e. draw what you like to make sure you don't get burned out.

If when drawing what you like you still don't enjoy the process of drawing, either you need to keep drawing until you enjoy the process, or maybe this isn't for you.
>>
>>2544528
Just practice more with what you feel comfortable with. I would suggest you power through draw a box, but you might not get as much out of it if you aren't willing and just let impatient tendencies run rampant

Is it okay to use a "digital plumbline/level" by literally drawing straight lines to find alignments and such on ref to train my eye's accuracy? Would it hurt me in the long run? I was thinking it should be okay since you get to use an actual plumb line and level when doing real world stuff.
>>
>>2545268
Digital art is great because those tools are there.
Using them won't make you any less of an artist.

You should still sketch without guides as well.
>>
>>2545253

Have you consider using the colorpicker? It should set you straight rather quicky. Obviously you want to make your best guess first and only use the colorpicker as a sort of digital assistant that gives you a critique and tells you how close or off you are. The immediate thing that strikes me is that your midtones are extremely gray and desaturated. This creates dull and lifeless skin. The midtones are typically the most saturated. A good way to learn with the color picker is to slide it over the light area, the midtone and the shadow and watch the HSB sliders jump. Paint a palette on your canvas and color pick from that instead of colorpicking from your painting. If you colorpick too much from your own painting you tend to delute the colors and eventually make them muddy and desaturated.

I love these but don't be afraid to push the pose. I say this by taking a pose like the bottom right and arching her back a little, or the pose on the left where she could have more of a slouch or perkiness.

By pushing a pose you take generic reference work and add personality to slowly develop your style.

What do you think about this?
>>
>>2545569
imo I think it just depends on what you want to do. They're supposed to be studies so just practice on what you think you're weakest on. Like if you're bad with hair then focus more on the hair or w/e or if you're learning values then practice with that. I think it would be preferred to try and draw the image as close to the actual image as possible but then again remember that it's just a study so don't stress if the details aren't exact.
>>
>>2545574
Thanks, your words are comforting. Especially the last line. I feel less stress just reading it. I also feel like I have a clearer idea about how to do this now.
>>
>>2545569
this : >>2545574

and after a while you should be confident that you know how to finish/render out an image so you know when to stop with a study and not go into pointless rendering. i think it's best to go too detailed first until you get comfortable, then go into simplifying, since when things are simplified, you sometimes can't tell what gaps you have in your knowledge
>>
>>2545581
just remember dude, every great artist was once terrible and they didn't get better by drawing good paintings that became better and better one by one. they got better because they drew out all the terrible ones and learned from their mistakes.

i mean, kids are usually taught diligence through working hard at school, but for a lot of people who found school easy they're used to breezing by and when they come across everything that actually requires time and effort they usually just avoid it, so it's for one cool that you're rejecting that philosophy

don't be afraid to suck, embrace the suck, be the suck, the sooner you get that defeated mentality out of your head the easier your art experience will be.
>>
>>2545582
I never thought about it that way, it's something to look for out now. I'll try your suggestion since I'm not fully comfortable with how exactly to approach a study yet. Confidence is key. It seems. I hope to be able to build it enough to notice results.

>take someone who's excited about learning to draw
>make them fill endless pages with straight lines and boxes
>give them the impression that this is a necessary prerequisite to becoming an artist
>watch them become frustrated and quit

DrawABox is a great resource, but it's misrepresented as a course for beginners. It's based on a course taught to new students at ArtCenter. ArtCenter doesn't admit beginners -- they admit dedicated amateurs who have the potential to become professionals. The intended audience affects both the intensity of the exercises and the overall structure of the course. None of the instructors were beginners when they took the course. Why anyone would think that a course aimed at those students would necessarily work well for beginners is beyond me.

If I were starting out I'd be looking for resources that helped me learn fundamentals while feeding my excitement. After building up sufficient dedication, I'd circle back around to DrawABox or a similar course to help me reinforce the fundamentals and catch any gaps in my knowledge.
>>
>>2545288

It's not cheating if you use it like I described it. You make your best effort at first, and when you feel stuck you use the colorpicker as a tool of analysis. The point is to learn and you WILL learn by doing this. It can also be useful to just go over your favorite artwork or photos and explore different areas with the color picker. The results may surprise you. Some colors are not what they seem to be, with different levels of saturation and in different contexts they can appear to be a completely different hue.

>>2545425

Read my comment again. The saturation level is what makes your half tones look grey, not the values. Use the HSB sliders. I'd advice to you to not start out with the color picker though, but make an effort to train your eye. Use the color picker when you can't figure out what you are doing wrong.

This is my take how you could construct the leg in perspective.

>1
Determine the true length of the leg in side view.

>2
Draw an imaginary rotation line (red) with the hip joint as the pivot.
Draw the knee on the rotation line and connect it to the hip joint. The leg has been simplified to a slightly tapered cylinder.

>3
The same applies if the leg is spread in the other direction. Pay attention how the contour lines wrap around the legs. Contour lines are great aid to see the perspective.
Because we're looking down, the rotation line for the ankles revolves in an ellipse path (because of perspective).

Actually, all rotation lines are revoled in an ellipse path instead of a straight line, but I was too lazy to correct it. It's only straight when the rotation happens at eye level.

>>2546192
Yeah I just saw that, each hip joint has its own rotation. Unless it's something else wrong?

This is specifically a question about PHOTOSHOP. I've started doing photo studies and I usually have my canvas open side-by-side with the reference photo. There is an option to 'match zoom' or 'match location' which takes you to the same zoom/location in image 2 as you are in image 1.

How do I make it so that it automatically and constantly matches the zoom/location between both images as I work? I remember seeing someone doing this in video I saw on youtube, but I can't find anything about this now.

Anyone know? Thanks

I don't think (for me atleast) that getting the shading more accurate at that scale is even possible.
It looks very accurate, human and natural.

Okay, about basic art theory:
On a object with the same local color and value (i.e. like the egg in the picture) the light side should have no values as dark as the values on the shadow side and vice versa. However, in the area of reflected light on the egg in the picture, some values are as bright as some in the midtones.

Does this mean that the bounce light in this case is so strong that it creates a new light zone on the egg? Isn't the definition of what is in shadow midtone or light based purely on value? The shadow appears at first to go across the egg like the standard "art demo sphere", but going by the values the shadow shape on the egg should actually rather be more triangular in shape and by posterizing the image in photoshop it confirms this.

I'm confused, someone set me straight

Here's some shitty scribbles explaining what I mean
>>

The classification and terminology is there to help you understand what is causing the appearance of things, and therefore paint it better.

Things are classified based on the source of light. So in this example, there is a main light source (a lamp to our right), ambient bounce light from the room (everywhere, faint), and then a more direct reflected light from the table (affecting the downward facing planes of objects near it). The egg shell has a slightly glossy quality to it, and the table is a light colour, so the reflected light in the egg shadow is fairly pronounced. That said, it wouldn't be considered another zone of light since the light is reflected light from the table. If there was another lamp off to the left (a light source) then you would get a second zone of light.

Anyways, as I said, the terms are meant to help you understand what is going on and therefore paint it better. Knowing that it is an area of reflected light and not another zone of light, you can be aware of not accidentally painting it too light in value, and if you choose you might even lower the value on purpose to downplay it.

Also the "everything in light is lighter than everything in shadow" rule is a generalization, and yes it holds true under normal circumstances and with matte objects of a single colour, but it also can have exceptions based on different scenarios. I would not worry too much about it.

How's this
>>

Thanks! I didn't take glossyness into the consideration. Obviously, a ball (or egg, whatever) resting on a table that is perfectly reflective like a mirror won't have the same values as a matte ball. Makes sense. So I suppose the glossier a object is the lighter the bounced light in the shadow zone will appear.

So, a matte, white sphere under one light source with some ambient and reflected light from the table will as a rule of thumb never have any bounce light the same value (as bright) as on the other side of the shadow zone. Correct?

Well if something is glossy that means it has a higher amount of specular reflections happening. There's two types of way an object can reflect light--specular and diffuse--and they both are separate processes that happen simultaneously on top of each other.

Specular reflections depend on the position of the light source and the position of the viewer, as well as the angle of the plane being hit with light. So a highly specular object MAY have brighter reflected light in the shadow, and may not, it really depends on the angles.

>So, a matte, white sphere under one light source with some ambient and reflected light from the table will as a rule of thumb never have any bounce light the same value (as bright) as on the other side of the shadow zone. Correct?
What are you asking? If the reflected light in the shadow will ever be as bright as any area in the light? If the object is matte, then no it will always be a bit darker since it receives less light. Think about it, the light areas are getting hit directly with photons from the light source. Any area of reflected light is caused by photons hitting an object, having some be absorbed, and then some be reflected. So fewer photons will hit the final area in the shadow. Any time an object is hit with light it will absorb some amount of photons. Even the best mirror in existence isn't 100% reflective.

This site talks about light in a very good way and dispels some common errors that are made in art instruction about it. It can be a bit technical and dry, but is a great resource.

Thanks again, that's really helpful. I've always relied on just painting until it looks good, and I've got a decent eye for value, but I've recently attempted to be a bit more structured when painting and it helps to keep things more coherent.
I've looked at that site before and was a bit turned off by the dry writing but I'll give it another go.
>>
>>2547830
Funny, I did the opposite where I started very mechanically and went fully into the technical side of things where I went to understand all the mechanics of materials and lighting, and now I am pushing away from that to try to go on intuition more.

In any case, a technical knowledge is a good thing to fall back upon when there is something that doesn't look right in a painting.

If you just read through the first few chapters on that site and then do a few still lifes and master copies you should have a reasonable understanding of light.
