I want to make an art rate app. Literally all you do is submit

This is a red board which means that it's strictly for adults (Not Safe For Work content only). If you see any illegal content, please report it.

I want to make an art rate app. Literally all you do is submit your art and when people are board they swipe and rate art in the app's associated database, giving people feedback on their work in the process.

What does /ic/ think of this? IMO the ability to gain critique is cumbersome in the online art world, things really need to change if we want to help the skill level increase in the artistic community as a whole.

This is a dumb idea for many reasons
>>
>>2539206

Okay. Please explain.
For the record this wouldn't be a means of getting detailed, well informed critique, just a way of gauging interest/appeal in a general audience without the limits that other types of platforms introduce.

I actually really like this brah. But please don't be one of those "idea" guys that brings this to a developer. Do it yourself or stop talking about it.
>>
make it for artists exclusive, so people who don't post cant rate.
maybe something sort of, post yours - critique someone else

Currently learning java. Not really a question of if but when, will be making this app for learning purposes, utility is secondary. Not sure if I can afford the database costs but if I make something halfway decent I might post a link to the app on /ic/, see if anyone finds it useful. Asking about it now out of curiosity and to be wary of things to avoid when designing this thing (although as my first app it'll probably be pretty damn simple as is).

-it needs a lot of people to sign up and post art there for it to work, which probably won't happen
-how do you stop people from posting artwork that isn't there own?
-what incentive is there to post? best case scenario you get a hugbox with asspats, worst case scenario you get shit on with no concrete feedback
-it encourages people to cater to the taste of the lowest common denominator
-no pros will care about this so it will be filled with garbage beginner work
-to judge artwork you need a set of criteria, which is not something everyone can ever agree on
-it won't actually help people improve since it's not constructive in any way
-high scores will lead to complacency, low scores lead to discouragement
-you say things need to change for the skill level of the community to increase, despite the fact it is at an all time high
-if it's not anonymous then people won't be honest, if it is anonymous then there's no way to tell who the people rating your artwork is so the information isn't helpful at all (are they jealous? are they young anime fans? are they big name pros?)
-if you have people using their real names then it will just encourage everyone giving high scores to each other in hopes of getting good ratings on their own art

I think I don't care to offer anything until you show us the barebones design

that said, you probably are hanging out at /g/, right?

Pretty much all art sites have some form of rating system. And how is this different than say, level up? I just don't see what new you are bringing to the table. Perhaps skip the rating altogether (which is only going to turn it into a another popularity contest) and make it a very streamlined critique app. Design it like tinder except with categories. I'd like swiping and critiquing a anatomy or a red line section for instance. But you need to have a web based version aswell. Most art isn't suitable for viewing on small devices, and it removes the overpaint/redline aspect.

shittily drawn fanart of popular series will draw false positives.

the community wouldn't even turn into a toxic popularity scramble, it would be one at the start.

it's a terrible idea in ways people have previously covered.

Expanding on my previous suggestion. You could make a streamlined redline website with a built in drawing program and have a rating system for the redline artists instead. That way, you wont get people spamming porn and kids who just draw dicks and mustaches will get downvoted into oblivion.

Tinder for art?

You seem to suffer from the illusion that great artists are just sitting on their hands waiting for an opportunity to critique beginners that will stop drawing in 1-3 months anyway.

OP, sell your idea to me like you're pitching it to an investor.
Give me a short pitch, just a couple of paragraphs detailing:
- What is your app, and what does it do.
- What is your target audience(s), and what's their incentive to use it.
- How does it differ from other existing apps or websites on the market. What makes it unique?

The reason I ask this, is because you need to distinguish the difference between your idea of merging two popular things (swipe/rate apps + art), and the already-existing things that people use separately (websites like deviantART which already have content sharing and rating/critique systems, mobile apps such as Pintererst, and the swipe/rate/date apps).

- How are you going to draw the people from those areas, into using your app?
- Why would an artist want to spend time uploading art on a mobile app?
- Would the people rating their art even be other artists, or just complete randoms? How does the artist know that the community won't just be a toxic bunch of kids on their phones, not giving any actual feedback?

A key thing to remember is that most swipe/rate apps are fueled by very specific incentives or "end-games", eg. sex or money. They're either people swiping through potential fucks/dates, or people swiping through potential things they want to buy (there's a car app based on tinder). While this audience does include a small group that would just use it for fun, or to validate their interests or ego, there's a very clear and concrete selling point for these apps.

What's your audiences incentive to swipe and rate art content. What's their "end-game"?
An example of a possible end-game would be that they're swiping through a pool of artists in order to find someone available for commission, who's art matches specific requirements filled in during the initial search.

tl;dr: I can't see people sitting around rating art purely just for the sake of rating art.
Your audience needs an incentive, an end-game.

Maybe this, but one submission gives you 5 rates or something.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
