Is this website still active enough to build a fanbase? I only have a small follower base there and none on Tumblr. I have no idea how to get followers to migrate to your Tumblr since sharing your account link doesn't seem to work.
>>
It's dead. If you want to build a fan base on tumblr, draw fanart for popular shows etc. Pander, pander, pander.
>>
Seems... unlively. Like there's still a lot of art that gets posted there, but if you're not already established, then nobody cares.
>>

I don't know, i think you can still build something small, but you need to be regular in your work. I don't even know how to use twitter, how the fuck works? you put your works and done?
>>
I'd say prioritize tumblr but it doesn't hurt to maintain a DA profile.
For some reason my DA stuff always shows up more on google searches despite me having far less of a presence there, and I sometimes notice tumblr blogs reblogging shit from my DA (which drives me crazy since I get like zero traffic to my blog but better than nothing).

I also find some stuff, especially fan art submitted to groups, tends to get a steadier longer-term viewership than tumblr, where you usually get a blaze of reblogs and then nothing (in my experience - larger blogs maybe get more mileage).

But yeah 90% of DA doesn't give a shit about following you to your tumblr and most strike me as very self interested and networking rather than genuine fans of your stuff. I've gotten a far larger following on tumblr than DA with the same content.

Usually the only people who "make it" on deviantart have been there for years, even a decade or more.

It's like let's plays. You had a small frame of time to break into the market, then it becomes over-saturated and no one can be arsed to bother with new content creators. They just stick to what they know.

Look at most popular artists on DA. They've been there for a fucklong time.

I will second that it seems that they (deviantart) have a good foothold for Google searches I've been pushing my Instagram hard but I prefer how the format gallery is on deviantart. Just how I feel

From what I've heard on some other videos,
The best way to become a famous YouTube letsplayer nowadays (if you do not have a rack of D-cups) is to be featured on someones channel.

Same rule probably stands for deviant art. Do something worthwhile for someone big and share some of their fans.
>>
>>2494000
or you fucking dumbassess can just start painting because you enjoy it.

ah shit I forget where I was there for a second.
>>
>>2496118
Maybe people want to be able to build a fanbase because painting/drawing is what they want to pursue as a career?
>>
>>2496222
>what they want to pursue as a career
a fanbase isn't going to give you a career. A good portfolio will though.
>>
>>2496257
While a good portfolio is incredibly important, a fanbase of even just a moderate size will be able to spread the word about your art, which could help you obtain job contracts.
>>
>>2496257
tell that to PewDiePie
>>
>>2496222
That doesn't address the problem though. In art you won't get good if you don't enjoy it. And if you don't enjoy it why pursue a career in it? A career should be a side effect of doing what you love and getting good at it, not the other way around.

Literally half the successful people in animation right now are there because they were popular artists online and got noticed by talent scouts.

You think Rebecca Sugar worked her way up the ladder to meet Pen Ward? She got there because she had a ton of fans and Amid was one of them who made CartoonBrew articles about her. And most of Sugar's crew for her show comes from people's work she found online and liked. One artist she used to follow exclusively because they drew Ed Edd n Eddy porn.

Deviantart is the best place to actually host your art because they have huge image size limits and never delete shit, it's actually hard to get banned without doing something against the rules on purpose repeatedly unlike tumblr's "hurt fee fees get swatted and banned" shit.

But the best place to actually get popular is facebook. Just posting to a couple art groups once a while gets you lots of new eyes. I was getting thousands on personal pieces without having to pander to bullshit SJW sweetheart shows or something. If that fails you can always actually pay for views and facebook will make sure X ammount of people are shown your publicitary banner. Haven't tested this in my art page but my roomie's papercrafts page got over 2k new subscribers after pushing an ad that cost him $3 or something and that actually got him sales unlike shitty tumblr and it's 4k poor sjw shitcunt teens.

Its the site where i got the fastest growing recognition due to groups and this "daily deviantion " thing where it shits out tons of watchers at once though you have to have Luck with the algorythm. It sucks as far as advice or criticism goes. Some will get so triggered They report you and get your shit deleted if you write harsh criticism

A couple people does not mean half, I know quite a few people working in animation only one has any kind of popular blog and he got in way before he had any traction.

Networking is of course super important like any career but actually knowing art directors directly is more than any amount of followers.
>>
>>2499747
Hooooly shit. I haven't seen that in over a decade
>>
>>2499951
Networking doesn't work as well online as it does offline. The best reason to go to an art school at all, especially a high ranking one, is for connections to where you want to work.

But it's definitely not the makeit/breakit decision since ultimately your work in regards to what your clients or boss wants matter way more than who you know.

Networking is 1000% much more likely to get you a job than having a massive fanbase. The first time I got a studio position was through a friend of a friend of mine who I met because I was friends with his GF who was in my classes.

I almost got some positions because of my "fanbase" but they never fully went through with it. Even then I have a much larger fanbase than pretty much anyone here and networking has been my most solid way to get work.

Maybe you'd get more attention if you had your art on DA, but posted it to Pinterest, there's an art board. With repins and the like, I think it's an untapped source once you get past all of the soccer moms and preteens repinning your work. You'd just have to put a watermark on it.
