Something's broken, what do I do?

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

How many of you guys think that "making it" (IE. living off your art) is even possible? The more I learn about the industry the more I realize that the vast majority of working artists make peanuts and that most of them have to work multiple jobs. What kind of work do you guys think you'll be doing/what industries are you gonna pursue?

Could have a better lighting. The darks arent dark enough and kibna blend in with the midtones. Sometimes you have to deviate from the reference to gain better aesthetics.
The hair looks weird as you have drawn pretty much all the strands. You can smallen your workload and make it look better if you only draw strands in the light area like as a highlight. Almost like not even drawing the strands just darkening the area around them so it looks like hairhiglights.

Communication design is what I'm studying right now as a cover for gitting gud, so I imagine I have that to fall back on if I'm so bad I can't even get some good commission work by the time I graduate. While /gd/ stuff is kind of intuitive to me, I'm not very interested in it, though a friend has a spot for me in his company's art department or whatever the hell if it comes to that. I'm friends with a few professional artists so I know it is possible to live off your art. It's hard to be certain about my own future though. I always wanted to do comics and that's all I ever planned for and that turned out to be the stupidest thing I could've done. The comic industry is flooded with people who want work and traditional comics are are in a rough transitional period so there isn't much work to go around. Now I'm working towards getting some kind of illustration job and getting into video game art but every day I have to fight back thoughts that I'll never be good enough to land a job like that. I'm aiming to make a portfolio I can send to Blizzard without getting laughed at but I'd be lying if I said I was confident I can do it. I have no idea what else I'll try if I can't, probably the freelance/patreon route.

Seems like you are just banging off popular ideas. You should really think what you really want to do. Focus on improving your fundamentals and start really thinking what you wanna do.

Also eventhough comics have surplus of artists it doesnt mean it's impossiible to make it. If uour stuff is actually good in fundamentals and it's something you really like/interesting then it's sure to sell.

This is exactly me. When I was a kid I always dreamed of being a cartoonist or a comic book artist but the more I learn about it the less I want to do it. I don't think I would even mind the crazy hours you have to put in if comic artists were paid enough to sustain themselves. It's almost impossible to get in and once you do get in, you make peanuts unless you're lucky enough to make a name for yourself. And if you go down the creator owned route then you make close to nothing. I think Greg Capullo said in an interview that all aspiring comic book artists should try to be commercial artists and look for work everywhere because comic books are so hard to get into/pay so little.

What I really want to do is comics but it's not happening. I'd have to do some form of self publishing or crowd funding at this point. I also can't really do the side job thing because of some other situations I have going on but after trying unsuccessfully for 2 years to get a non art job I said fuck it and decided to go all in. Yeah, I saw that too, that's why I decided to branch out. The ones who support themselves on it mostly all do comics, ironically. A few are at DC, my mentor does stuff off and on for DC and Marvel. It's hard even for them to keep it steady but they all have a rap sheet that keeps demand up. They've gotten me gigs which is how I've kept going, but even with their help I haven't been able to get comic work. But like Capullo said it's not very sustainable anyway, best to find greener pastures.

Sure making it is possible, it's just about whether you "make it" into the right kind of position where you'd actually be happy and preferably not living off peanuts too.

I worked a full time online job for the past couple of years while trying to art at the same time and found that it's just not possible. Might be just me but I never had the energy or drive to do anything other than just grinding out daily work for the job and then sleeping. Saved up and moved back home for now though, so it's much cheaper than renting a flat in a city and I have more time to work on art all day like a true NEETmode god.

As for what art work I want to do, I'm pretty clear on just wanting to paint. Illustration is main target but I'd also be happy to do storyboards, paintings for individual people rather than companies, and possibly advertising as long as it was still for painterly stuff. I just want to be paid to paint family, and get slowly closer to being good like Leyendecker etc.

Yeah, I think the majority of the responses are going to be not starting earlier.

I remember when I was in middle school and I wanted to become a flash animator, make stupid original works and fanart and get notoriety during the hectic old flash days. I knew a couple of people who did their own claymation stuff and I was so envious about how much attention they got for it, but when I attempted some animation myself, I got dead stares and disinterest.

Year after year, those dreams languished while growing in scope constantly. And I would pursue them almost never. The reason would always change, but were always some mix of laziness, fear, self-hatred or embarrassment.

It's almost a decade later and I've started, but I'm about to graduate college. And while I often get comments like "why are you freaking out over your age? are you going to die in the next two years?", my resentment mostly stems from the fact that I will never again be at the age where I can share somewhat competent manifestations of my silly, childish ideas and fanart of the month to giddy, gleeful reception from my classmates. I won't have the then-cringy art that over the years, blossoms into continued learning and competency, the inchoate creative expression of a child without inhibitions that I'll look back fondly back on and remember how admired I was for it, while continuing my journey to create something meaningful. I missed my chance. I will never have that back, no matter how good I get now, and I fear I won't have the drive or dedication to achieve anything significant in the future, regardless.

My biggest problem I think was that I constantly wanted to make something "perfect" whenever I would draw, which would put immense pressure on my shoulders. The positive is that I'd most of the time end up drawing things I liked and still like as of today, but it wasn't worth it because I'd always spend weeks and sometimes months or those pieces while not drawing anything else.

The other one was studying, simply. I'm grateful for /ic/ in that regards, as meme-tier the whole board is it made me realize how shitty I was and how I had to study to get better. Thankfully prior /ic/ and LAS I had been learning a 3rd language all on my own so which taught me how to study. I think people often don't realize how important it is. At least in my case I never bothered studying and such back in school, so when I started approaching the mid 20s and started following my hobbies etc I realized I absolutely no discipline. It was hard but I've come a long way.

Still got a long way to go though.

I started seriously when I was 13, but all of my learning was based on comparing my drawings to my reference. I learned a little going to art school but I never figured out how to get from beginner to intermediate. 13 years later and I'm just now learning proper construction.

I really wish I'd started learning animation. I was dead set against it but it's a skill that would've benefited me so much right now. I could've learned audio editing and Flash and that probably would've helped me get a headstart on learning 3D modeling. I'm going to start on it now but I wish I'd done it when I had access to classes and school facilities where I could've used computers that could handle that shit. There are four main reasons I started to hate it.

One, you have to always keep up. People toss around names of frameworks that I've never even heard of. They're talking about Handlebar this, and Cucumber that, and in the meantime, I'm dicking around with CSS/HTML/Javascript. I'm fucking shocked that I got the job that I did (follow-up to an internship), and while I'm grateful, I'm terrified that it turns out I'm horribly incompetent and I'll get fired anyway, most people at my skill level get code monkey jobs at about 30-40k a year, but I managed to land a 108k gig that's not in California or Chicago, so I'm basically living a life completely free of financial woe. Hence, why I hate myself for hating this situation. It could be so much fucking worse.

Two, mistakes are agonizing, especially when non-obvious. Syntax errors are fine, they tell you what the problem is directly and are fixed fairly quickly. But when you have odd behavior or some sort of functional anomaly, it can take anywhere from thirty minutes to a fucking week to diagnose and resolve the problem.

Three, I can't stand some of the types of people you get in this environment, but this could be confined to my university. You get the know-it-all douchebags who think they've got the next big startup, who think they know everything and run a blog on all their irrelevant opinions. Then, you got the turbo-autists, who while admirably master every facet of even the most obscure languages, are an absolute nightmare to talk to.

Lastly, while it's a creative and "constructive" endeavor, you never get the satisfaction of the tactile feedback of really "making" something. This might just be me, but drawing and sculpting feel so much more satisfying. I get to feel and craft and contort as the project comes together. With programming, this creation is abstracted by massive blocks of text, and constant roadblocks. Thank god I landed a job as a front-end web designer.

That's my two cents.

I once took a course on OpenGL/WebGL and that was really boring, frustrating and not at all interesting. It might have just been the way the course was taught, but the whole thing was extremely poorly organized, and spending half my time digging through documentation is a pain.

Neural Networks, and AI in general is really fascinating but hard as fuck.

That's why I focused on front-end web programming. It's flexible, you can pump out interesting things in a short amount of time, and there's a lot of room for creativity.

I didn't think I could learn. Like I knew I would get a little better if I kept drawing but there was this one girl specifically in elementary school who I saw drawing anime and thinking thats how good I should be but nothing I draw ever looks like that.

None of my art classes as a kid actually taught me anything, we did all the right side of the brain exercises but never told what we were actually doing. I was just symbol drawing with a viewfinder as a kid with no clue why my stuff still sucked.

I never really understood art was something you could actually STUDY. I thought you just drew and if you didn't get better you never could.
