Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, There is a question thread for that.

Visit the usual "Art book Thread" to find your desired books.

Do not forget to PLEASE RESIZE and crop your images before uploading them. 1kpx is fine.
Before asking "what should I read/view/study/learn," Read the f*cking sticky, it's there for a reason: >>1579290
There's a new sticky in town! You can see it at https://www.reddit.com/comments/46sb9k/

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

The important thing is to draw what you see, not what you know. once you start that, its basically deciding how much detail to put in. Yes, you can shoot for realism but only if your willing to invest the time. Your time is really better spent focusing on gesture and rhythm, getting the feeling of what you see down in as few lines as possible. good luck champ
>>
>>2453423

Must view before posting! Remember that you are on the steps of a new journey, and one that people spend their lives on! treat yourself nice and be kind. Don't pressure yourself for perfection, just take in and use as much knowledge as you can. Take in every piece of feedback you can and refine it, use it as fuel and push onward. Constantly grow, and someday you will be there. best of luck /beg/!

Guys, I need your experience. I attend to a drawing course to an artist highschool, we draw nudes now and I have problems with angles, so yesterday my teacher tossed a drawing frame grid to me (like pic.) and told me to use while practicing. Great help, but while I use this won't I learn only to copy?

>>2453701
For your first, its ok, its not very clear whats going on, the clouds are significantly darker than the sky, sand dunes to the right or an ocean? you need to look at a couple of references to get a grounding at the correct size and feel of things. Aswell as your perspective being off. Keep on at it champ, landscapes are always a pretty fun test of skill
>>
>>2453740
not quite, its a visual aid. It helps your mind break the figure into sectors, and then put them together making a more balanced image. After some practice you'll start to try to do the same but without the grid. Go for it champ. Make me proud

>>2453922
You're on the right path.
If you're having trouble drawing from imagination, try to memorize the construction of the figure (or the face here in this case) then draw it out best from memory. If you're having a hard time remembering something on a specific feature, look for reference then continue your practice.

Just practice it. Attempt it a good 100 times and you should notice progress.

MY NIGGAS

My brother is going to Las Vegas next week and wants to buy some art supplies to me. While I usually work on digital, I don't think that our 80$ budget is enough to buy a decent tablet or anything like this there.

So I ask you: Do you have sugestions for pencils/pens or anything else?

Sorry if this isn't the best place to ask it, but looking at the catalog, it seemed to be the closest place to talk about art supplies.
>>
>>2454118
No, that's actually the right way around.
>>
Please post pics related to improving one's ability to draw eyes and mouth. I'm good at constructing the face, getting it ready to draw in the details, but fucking terrible at the details. I at least don't symbol draw.
>>
>>2453909

>>
How much is a tablet good enough just to start off with?

What do you get from more expensive ones?
>>
>>2454147

I have the same problem that you have, but I want to find some digital suplies. So its the opposite I guess.
>>
>>2454164
Tablets are expensive from the start.
If you don't have the funds now for something like an Intuos medium, I would recommend just saving up.
>>
>>2454173
Looks like I have the money then.

I just don't have the skills or knowledge, and I haven't invested enough time to justify that price.

Thanks.

Huions are great and much cheaper than Wacom. 710 pro was like 70$ and it used to be recommended a lot but I think there are newer models now so definitely go check those out before throwing out 300$+ for a wacom.

I got a Wacom One medium for like 60 eurobux but I'm pretty sure those are out of production. For a price like that it's pretty worth it even if you don't have much skill yet. Painting is tons of fun and compared to price of good paint, easel, brushes etc, this is much more affordable.
>>
>>2454147

Go to questions thread next time: >>2451740

To answer your question tho, If you are a beginner and you want to draw, there is no need to spend 80 bucks. You need lots of cheap paper(newsprint rolls or printer paper), some semi-good pencils, pencil sharpener and a kneaded eraser. Maybe some charcoal/conte which is more fun for gesture drawings.
>>
>>2454260
Ok I will check there. Thanks for the advices mate.
>>
>>2454231
bretty good work anon. A few things are off proportion but it all feels good. Keep it up champ I look forward to seeing more from you

>>2454118
No way man, you take in that visual information! put that shit to paper! It doesn't matter how long you look and stare, wither you just look or you use a pencil or a viewfinder to study, just do you and put your worries aside.

>>2454046
The drinks made me have a laughing fit. At least you know your mistakes and even acknowledged them with your little doodle. This being said, everything seems off still. Without your doodle of the hand, we wouldn't visually know how big the drink would be.We would relate it to the burger, the nearest thing our minds knows the size of. And because of that, that means the drink would be very large. On top of that, Its not made clear what the strange box-like things are between the burger and the drink. The closest thing I could relate them to is sauce packets, but they are much too long to be them.

Perhaps the nail in your coffin was the horizon line being so low. Its part of the reason your drink is so strange, and also why your burger seems disconnected from the rest of it. the burger should be closer to the packets, creating depth, but also shown taller and from a lower angle would have given it more uniformity and interest. It was a really valiant effort though champ, give her another shot and make sure to get a strong, solid composition reference

>>2453536
>>2454002
Sounds like you two need a dose of encouragement juice. You are unique. There are ones like you, and even ones that do the same topic as you do, but your work will be different then theirs. Because its created by you. Use that to your advantage. See an issue in your work you hate ? study up and look for a solution. Even if you do one issue at a time per week, after a year that's about 52 issues down. and that's pretty danm good. So you, yea you, reading this now. Hang in there. I believe in all of you. Go champ go

That's an easy do buddy. Its just gonna take some time on your part. If I have alot of pages to fill or just want to practice, I give this place a try

http://earthsworld.com/

It's just filled with a variety of faces that are fun to try and re-create. if your up for figure/gesture drawing, take a shot at

http://reference.sketchdaily.net/en/

They have multiple tabs so you get anything, from just hands, to only birds from the back, to your everyday gesture studies

If your looking for still lives, Remember that every inanimate object, no matter how mundane it is, is a still life waiting to happen! re-arrange that junk into a nice composition with your desk lamp as lighting and you'll be set. Go to it champ! have fun!

Ps: not to be a dick or anything, but all (except earthsworld) of the references I've linked you to were available in the wiki, not to mention dozens more. You should really give it a shot, its more then just a meme <3 good luck

>>
>>2454329
No prob man! some nice figure work you got there. And don't worry, it gets easier the more you do it. Your working at a pretty basic break down level. Papa Loomis will be doing you some good, along with brother Hampton, cousin Vilppu and creepy uncle Bridgeman. From where you are its more a mater of making sure your structures are placed correctly and defining them more and more, while retaining the original gesture (your lacking gesture in these makes them feel stiff champ) That being said,
>>2454330
makes me happy to see that you start going for poses from different angles without ref. push yourself to know your boundaries and then push your boundaries out further. I can see by the last one you were getting tired though, throughout them everything was more less accurate, and by the end the arm length is abysmal. Overall, your coming along great. and with a bit more learning from the Papa, you'll start doing work that you feel more confident in. Keep at it champ

>>2454328
Hell ya! it's not direct, 1-1 because the medium is different, like how drawing doesn't make you a good painter and vice versa, but key things like composition and hand eye co-ordination that you grow when working on drawing, grow on other mediums too. Best of luck champ!

Gurney is godsent if your looking to even control values better. Both of his books are great, but the Imaginative realism goes over more basic level things then the other, that goes more in-depth with color. His channel on youtube is fantastic as well. But most of all, use reference. not just one, but many of a similar scene. observe the size and scale of the objects and replicate it. And, if your working with ink, don't be afraid to use washes! a pale grey for the clouds would have been a much better choice. Look forward to seeing the results champ!

I think you might want to lighten up your value transitions on the cheek. When highlight and shadow get too close, it can cause the planes to look flatter. Easing up the transition would round it.

Are there any really really in depth videos about applying the loomis ball and plane method to drawing portraits of real people? I'm struggling really hard placing everything properly. I've watched proko but I feel like I really need a long ass video so my dumb ass can learn this shit. He does an overly of his head with the planes, but when he actually draws it, it's from imagination, and everything seems to follow the perfect proportions which rarely happens.

Whenever I try to set up the ball and plane, it's always off model from the reference and it just fucks everything up. I find it especially hard since people always vary from the ideal proportions Loomis gives. I really wanna learn to do this right but I've just been sucking shit at it for so long. I dont wanna give up. Even when I finally do get the planes right after trial and error, the details of the face are so fine and even a small discrepancy can destroy the picture. I know its possible, but to me it feels like I'd have to be a computer to get that pin point accuracy. I always find myself erasing and redrawing over and over again trying to get things just right and it really frustrates me.

TL;DR im shit help me pls
>>
>>2455433
Well, not really.
The entire idea of the Loomis ball is to make the head as simple as possible. You can look at Proko's videos since he tries to sum up Head to Hands within his videos, but still doesn't give you too much info.

If your neck is looking off, try drawing the neck as a cylinder. Don't worry about contours. If the neck still looks off, make the cylinder smaller. Do not bend the cylinder.
>>
>>2455438

So is the Loomis technique not meant for portrait drawing? Is it even viable for that? If it isn't, what should I do? I want to draw comics, so I thought learning to draw real people with loomis would help me get used to anatomy before I started stylizing and drawing from imagination.

Is this a bad plan?
Thanks for the advice about the neck.
>>
>>2455442
If you like to draw real people, sure this is a plan.

Jeffrey Watts has some videos on youtube and you can download some of his videos from the internets to see how he uses something similar/improved over Loomis head for the construction phase when drawing people's faces.

There are probably others.
>>
>>2455463

Well I don't really enjoy it that much because I get frustrated, although that will probably go away as I get better. I got the impression that it would be important, so I undertook it anyway because I thought it would be beneficial in the long run. I really just wanna get to the style but I know rushing will just ruin things, and I'm kinda OCD about due process so it would nag at me if I felt i skipped anything even if it was just a little important.

I'll take a look at Jeffery Watts in the mean time. For now I'm just looking at models and trying to apply loomis to draw their basic form before adding details and features.

I don't know if you got confused while reading my post, but I said that fundamentals carry between mediums. And Im only slightly disagreeing with you on drawing making you a good painter, since the tools are different and methods are different, its not 1-1. Because I know certain brush strokes does not mean I know how to replicate them while working in pencil. Theres some training to be done in between, but other then that the fundamentals are indeed the same. The goal of my post was to make sure they were not discouraged while transitioning between medium, that's all. I cant tell if you've had a bad day or you're just a hostile anon but you would have been better off to read my post a bit more carefully, that way you wouldn't look quite as foolish, basically yelling at someone you agree with

a good way of thinking at first is completely ignoring contours, and think about the forms that create the contours. so get the gesture, then add a bean form for the torso, and long round forms for the arms and legs, all following the gesture. use lines that wrap over the forms to help you to see what's happening too. and once you've done with the basic forms, you can think about adding anatomy onto these

it might seem weird but another thing that helped me a lot is studying spirals going around forms. stuff like cacti, pinecones and just simple candy cane patterns helped me to understand what happens to diagonals on a form as they wrap around.

after those try doing diagonal wireframes around figures, and you should be pretty much set for crosshatching in terms of form, then move to working on values

fair enough, if that's the case then i'll just say that I think you need to reconsider how you approach painting a scene like this. when it's dark and the only light source is fire, you can afford to outright ignore the local colour of the various objects depicted in the scene. Most of your composition should be very close to black, and everything else left should just be lit by the fire's light, which is a warm orange hue.

Hey, /ic/, I need some advice. I know there's a sticky, and I'll continue to browse it, but it's pretty exhaustive and hopefully I can get some more pointed advice from people--particularly who are or were where I'm coming from. My situation is this... Basically, I have a lot of natural talent for drawing. I'm not great and I guess I'd call myself a beginner, but I've always been much better than average at drawing from the time I was a kid. I was a pretty enthusiastic drawer in elementary school and middle school. As of now, I'm pretty decent at drawing certain, more cartoony things from reference--like if given a picture I can draw a pretty good Pikachu or Bugs Bunny for example.

Pic related is an example of something I did--(this was for a thread on /sp/ about drawing famous athletes on this weird ball template thing). This was done in MS Paint just using the mouse. Actually when it comes to drawing I'm ambidextrous even though I'm left handed otherwise.

So I'm not one of those people who "can't even draw a stick figure", but make no mistake I am not at all technically skilled.

All aspects of my drawing need work, but for now I'd like start getting back into drawing by tackling anatomy. I cannot draw really good/accurate anatomy, especially just from memory.

What works for you guys as far as practicing and drawing anatomy? Just in terms of books, or techniques/habits you personally use?

Again, sorry, I know there's a sticky--it's not my intention to be some special snowflake.

TL;DR - Naturally talent drawer who doesn't practice and isn't technically skilled. How do I into anatomy.

>>
>>2456318
it's not any specific coloring style, in fact it's just a monochrome painting that doesn't use any blending ie only hard brush strokes.

it looks like the artist started painting each figure by laying in their silhouette in a relatively dark colour, then working up to successively brighter colours for the specific details

you're better off rolling your own or doing something simpler, much simpler.

I drew my hand (my fingers are short in reality too) with a 15 minute timelimit to prove to somebody who only drew Disney style cartoons that I was better at them at art despite never drawing anything since school. I drew this about 5 years ago and I have not drawn anything else since.

I suck at pen control (I only learned how to hold a pen correctly as an adult), but I find drawing what I see fairly easy. Should I just grind straight lines/curves for a few days? Is drawing with arm and shoulder muscles really worth doing?

>>2456441
Use a thinner brush and draw with a single line if you're not going to use the line tool. When you start referencing and measuring you're going to want concise points to do it, thick and hatched lines make these points fuzzy and result in error.
Also, if you're doing this for an exercise in visualizing space, draw through the form.

I don't know what you mean, anon. I'm just trying to internalize the first exercises from the Loomis Successful drawing book.

>>2456475
I'll probably just opt for using the line tool because it's more precise. By draw through the form, you mean draw the insides right? That's how I did it initially but I cleaned it up. I'll leave it next time.
Sloppiness aside, did I fuck up too royally or am I headed in the right direction? I'm feeling really unsure about the top and bottom shapes.

Google references of people in the same pose and apply it to your drawing. For shading in general study light logic.

Also pic related, your colors are pretty dull try shading by adjusting color instead of saturation
>>
>>2456451
Drawing from the shoulder is for when you stand or the paper is mounted. This is also where you use a lot of different grips.

When drawing while sitting with the paper close to you, you are best of using a grip similar to when writing (tripod grip) and just use more of your arm for longer lines. Also avoid resting your body on your arms.

Thanks, I think I corrected it.

I tried to replicate the values so hard I began to mess up the colors, what I chose didn't look well when the highlight were near-white

Should study the colors

As for the lines, well, it wasn't supposed to be a painting at first, I'm kind of glad with the result though, should I?

How am I supposed to draw from the shoulder on a tablet? A normal sized intuos is only half the size of a standard sheet of paper. I've spent months learning to draw from the shoulder but every time I use the tablet I regress back to using my hand.
Am I supposed to zoom in and draw every limb seperately? I can't fucking do gesture like that. Help. I'm dying.

My approach is to doodle my way to the point where I need to look up refs and fundamentals etc..

The most valuable thing I've learnt by doodling is to always try to do something I've never thought of or considered before.

I have a tendency to do the same lines all the time, but the drawings just gets worse and worse when I do that.

You don't have clear vanishing points.
in 2-point perspective, every one of those lines should continue on to intersect the same 2 points on either side of the horizon line.

I'm a noob myself, but may I suggest doodling?

Why is drawing from life considered the only way to learn figure drawing? Can't you, with a sense of form and perspective, just study photos?
>>
>>2456750
Eh it all looks like random, chaotic scribbles rather than drawings. Pay a little more attention and go slower. Every line should be showing the form, while you have lines all over the place.
>>
>>2455764
Not sure if too late, but here it goes. You have to take landmarks and make use of negative space. On top of that you should try to make less, but cleaner lines instead of scribbling. Think each time befote you draw a line instead of finding the correct one by tracing it 20 times.
we all struggle with these things. Keep practicing and dont get stuck endlessly on a picture. 20 doodles are better than one refined drawing at this stage. Now draw again and come back to post your progress
>>
>>2455951
You are thinking 2d. Go make betty edwards exercises.
And try to clean your lines a little.
Practice practice make more and post
>>
>>2456765
You are missing information because photos have already made the switch to 2d for you. I use photos a lot but I notice faster progress when I go out and draw. Even if it is just a bunch of shaky subway sketches.
>>
>>2456765
it's just very different. Photos are already 2D but in life drawing you have to do a translation of 3D into 2D. You see it differently. You really should try some life drawing to understand this. Before I had my first life drawing session, I didn't understand it either.

>>

The arm and body are disproportionately long compared to the head, the head is too large, and the breast is saggy and deflated.
Watch some anatomy tutorials and try some basic poses for exercise. Just keep drawing and don't get discouraged.

First, I want to you find some resources that break down the body into understandable shapes. I would suggest watching some proko on youtube or checking out loomis if you're more of a reader.

Nobody cares to critique it because
1. Your shitty photo. Get a scanner
2. You drew way too faintly or maybe its just your shitty photo
3. Its just photostudies and not very interesting ones at that.

Looks like you barely pulled off the contour and then made an afterthought of an attempt at toning it in.
Try to build your drawing next time. And dont do one girl, do several girls. Then the next day do several skulls. Dont just put 3 pictures you think are nice onto one spread and chuck the pencil to snap a pic. At least try to show some rigor...
>>
>>2457162
Yes, I understand that. I did not think I needed to write a full paragraph on why I think it is helpful. It is clear what the differences are.

Not enough context to want to give an answer.
What stage are you, how much effort have you put in with your natural technique. Why consider doing things differently.

Only been drawing seriously for a couple weeks, 4-6 hours a day on weekdays. But with my wrist I cant make circles unless i do them reaaally slow because it pops, and I have horrible finger dexterity(middle knuckle is fat on all my fingers so they get in the way of eachother.) I also just generally feel more restricted with the wrist.

Anyway I can make circles pretty easy with my shoulder, and everything generally feels smoother. Just wondering if it's realistic/worth it to train my shoulder for those finer details.
>>
>>2457242
I also would like to know more about shoulder drawing. I drew >>2456456 with purely finger/wrist motion, and you can see the lines aren't perfect, but with shoulder it would be much worse. Can I become good without shoulder drawing, or is this an "expert beginner" situation?

I'm in the same spot, and the cheek is either too round or too flat.

Also the views between profile, 3/4 and face are difficult, I'm doing them at random, are there any references for more angles please?

From what I can see, the further eye in 3/4 is 0.5 times as wide as the front-eye, also the eyeline is parallel to the mouth which is a bit oblique.
>>
>>2457302
What also bothers me in 3/4 is shape of the side of the jaw that is not hidden (the "front" while not being the chin), which leads to the ear, and the position of this very ear, I know the alignment is the same as the nose in perspective but I never can really figure the distance precisely.

Prokos robo bean video made some sense in terms of simplifying the torso and its position, but my proportions were still ass, they still kind of are which is what I'm working on. Just went back to loomis and traced pic related and a couple times to get a feel for it and now am just drawing a shitton of it everyday til i get it mostly right then ill go on to other angles, and then positions.
>>

Mouth is too low down, the nose is a little wonky, the eyes are suffering from a little bit of "almond syndrome", and there's a general lack of underlying "bone" structure in the face and body. Her chest are looks bloated, and her right leg looks bent the wrong way. Also a little bit of a nitpick, but you should be able to see at least a little bit of the inside of her left sleeve.

It's a shame really, since you seem to have a decent base of how to colour, you just need Loomis
