WITHOUT MENTIONING ANY ARTIST NAMES have you ever been burned by another artist on comissions?

I used to every once in awhile commission artists that I liked and respected. 2 different artists, I paid in November and January and both have yet to send me a sketch. Both have said they are really busy and don't know when they can get to them.
>>
>>2445739
yes, it's been well over a year on one for me. They cant afford to refund and havent finished. all i have is wips.
>>
>>2445739
>>2445746
show the wips then?
>>
I don't even get why people commission digital art without it being a print. Real life art you walk past in your house everyday, what do you do with digital art? Open the JPG every once in a while then close it?
>>
I don't understand how this seems so common. Do people have no fucking work ethic? How the fuck can you take someone's money without knowing full well that you can do the work?

no 'cause I don't commission other artists.
Partially because the artists I like don't do commissions or I don't wanna contact 'em, and largely because I'm not interested in general.
I'd rather by an art book.

On that, I don't understand how an artist can make someone wait a year. I'd accept that it's because their busy if it weren't for the fact that I'm busy too; except in my case, the most I've made someone wait is two weeks. I'd go further to say that I could trim that if I didn't spend the time I do for personal work.
Unless you're working on 45-60 hr paintings, I can't understand making people wait so long.
You're either slow as fuck or don't care, and there's not many good things to say about an artist that doesn't care about their clientele.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I feel like I've been burned without commissioning artists. I typically don't like other artists, and I'd say it's because so many seem like babies.

>>2445777
That's kinda the thought process, and if that's the case: how are these people not giant fucking babies?

>>2445776
You said it yourself; you can take the piece and print it. You can also use it for a profile, or a desktop, or a splash page for a stream, or a banner, or fucking any of the other shit tons of media that utilize visual media.
>>
Yes, I used to commission artists better than myself couple times a year. I've been burned too many times. It's not like I'm asking too much work ethic from them but when you don't get rough sketches after 3 months it's their fault.
>>
This raises the question of payment. Everytime I've heard someone pay 50/50 they get art in a timely manner. But when they pay 100 up front they end up waiting months.
>>
>>2445791
That's because when you get all the money upfront you're less likely to work more because you got what you asked for.
I can testify because when I first did a wall painting for a bar, they paid my friend and I upfront. We took too much time than what was needed. In the end, although they liked it, we felt unsatisfied.
>>
>>2445763
possibly. i do know they browse 4chan, but i'm not sure if they browse ic or not.
>>
>>2445791
This shit is kind of a double edged sword to me.

A part of me wants to laze off when I get paid but delaying it will bite you in the ass sooner or later.

Another thing that irks me with a 100% upfront is when the client asks for too many fucking revisions or change of heart with his decision that greatly lowers your morale.

The latter I experienced earlier in my career. The former is the result of the experienced I had.
>>
>>2445799
Yeah, it's best you don't. If they see you complaining about them I could see them not doing your commission or telling other artists you complain.

I'm not saying they are right but they will spin it like all you do is bitch and complain. But they aren't working anyway
>>
I have never been burned by another artist. In fact I have a regular artist that I get porn from every week.
>>
>>2445791
This is how most of the professional artists i know do it. They also use actual contracts.

Why the fuck wouldn't you mention their names? If you paid up front and the artists are blowing their deadlines, you should expose them so they learn not to abuse their costumers, and so other people don't lose their money to them.

About having "so much work they can't get around to it" yeah, tough, if you can't do it, don't take the comission, and specially don't take the money in the first place.

To protect these guys names like that is to assure they will keep making a fool out of their clients.
>>
You need to communicate with eachother
You should have discussed all the probable problems that could arise before you've even begun.

>how long it will take
>how often you will be updated
>what happens if you fail to meet the deadlines set

If you haven't agreed on any sort of time estimate than you're just as much at blame as the artist.
>>
>>2447507
There are so many artists that do commissions, calling names here would do absolutely nothing anyways as the chance of any two people here having commissioned the same artist, that has burned them, is very slim. Besides that, the thread will be gone after a while and the names long forgotten.

Im actually blown away by the very idea

Ive just switched to fulltime art and have yet to make any money of course, but the day I sell my art for REAL WORLD MONEY is the day I kiss the sidewalk
>>
Also why shouldnt you mention the artist names? We should have a rating site for artists like yelp or ratemyprof.
>>
>Both have said they are really busy and don't know when they can get to them.

They should've thought of that before accepting money for a job they can't do. It's irresponsible. Ask for a refund, if they refuse to refund you, put them on blast.
>>
I never believe in /r9k/ tier anecdotes.
>>
>>2447598
It doesn't get any easier after your first buck.

It will always be a constant struggle.
>>
>>2447752
Oh but of course
>>
>>2445739
one dude ordered me a comic and i just fucking cant make myself work on it.
Since he paid me it's been more than a month, I already made a nuber of finished illustrations and on;y sketched up a part of that comic.
I CAN"T PUSH THIS OUTTA MY ASS
well i will probaly deliver one day and never agree for any further comic comissions, that' just not for me.
>>
>>2447790
Just return his money, dude, especially if it was a bad deal for you. Comics take a lot of time, I bet he didn't even give you enough for it to be worth your effort to begin with.

(inb4 hurr, I can't; the money is already spent and I have never and will never earn more)
>>
>>2447507
from now on i'm most likely not commissioning anybody else. if I do im asking for the 50/50. cause i had paid 50$+ for a full sized/color commission, and i'm sure they can't refund
>>
>>2447790
I hope you didn't spend his money already... How long is the comic going to be?
>>
>>2448435
10 frames.
>>
>>2445739
I haven't commissioned that many artists my self (5 in total, if I remember correctly) and have been very satisfied with the delivery time. Perhaps I've just been lucky or I've just not commissioned that many different people.

I've also done some commissions my self and they've usually been going according to plan. But there was an instance where I bit over more then I could chew and I started feeling burned out with drawing and keeping up with my regular job. But as soon as I realized this, I cancelled the batch, apologized to the commissionaires and gave them a full refund.

I don't understand people who spend the commissionaires money and then take for ever to deliver. Doesn't matter if you're feeling unmotivated, tired, depressed or what ever in that case, you better deliver in a timely manner or scrape together the cash for a refund.
>>
>>2448445
Well, that's not too bad. Sit your butt down and squeeze it out just this once, then you can cancel comics from your commission-types in the future. Heck, if you need some help getting started I'll even help you out (I'm not that good, but I've done some commissions my self and a few short fan comics, so I'm not completely useless, just kinda half-assed. But if you feel like delivering 100% your own product I can understand that too)
>>
>>2448458
Yes, thanks for a good advice and the rest, but i like to take care of myself unless I absolutely need help.
>>
>>2448461
I absolutely understand and that's a good mentality. Good luck, you can do it!
>>
>>2447507
I paid $15 for a full color commission and got it done in 3 days.
I like the drawfag
>>
>>2445791
I ask for the payment after I finished a picture and only then J send hi-res variant, havent been cheated yet, but I've done 5 commissions top
