Is it bad to play Runescape while practicing?
>>
>>2436848
Depends on how actively you're playing runescape, but I wouldn't do it. Honestly you should motivate yourself to get stuff done within a time window so you can play runescape /after/ art, which means you procrastinate less and feel rewarded and relaxed after drawing.

this

Your drawings are interesting but they're hyperactive and lacking quality. It's great you have a lot of ideas, but you need to actually work on your skills before you start trying to get them onto the page. Do some figure drawing and focus on construction over gesture.

I am so sorry about the quality, I had to up the contrast and everything.

I'm having trouble with perspective on this. It's supposed to be the POV of a man who fell off a defeated ship and is near drowning, but I keep making it as if he were standing.

>>
>>2436967
That is a good question. Go ahead and post in alt because if you do it here then it's a green light for others.
>>
>>2436979
The appeal of it for me comes mostly from the way you indicated the tendons through shadow and made good use of line weight, are you into David Finch's DVDs?
>>
>>2436950

You've drawn the perspective way too high. If he's in the water his eyes would make the horizon just above the surface, and he would be seeing the ships from below.
>>
>>2436986
It's something I picked up from a bunch of anon's, I made a blend of what I liked best in them. I've never heard of Finch but I looked him up and it's my style, I'll study more of him.

I've done plenty of hand studies but that was my second time drawing the sea and the first drawing ships, so I guess I just have to keep practicing and I'm gold.

>>2436998
It was even worse the first time, but it was just a quick sketch I did in easy classes these past two days so I didn't take it too seriously.

>>
>>2436977
What if I am already?
>>
>>2437012
Tidy up your lines. You're kind of doing the non-coloring-book version of "coloring over the lines" - and it's most likely because your lines weren't good in the first place. If the reference is of a smooth object like here, don't even think about shading til the lines are passable. All the black on the right is horrible too, I don't know why you did that, it's unnecessary and it's unevenly shaded too. Your lighting isn't too bad though, and the blending in PARTS is quite good, though there is a black splodge worth cleaning up in the centre.
>>
Should I actually read the text in Fun with a Pencil or just skip to exercises?
>>
>>2436948
Thank you very much, I will focus on construct more from this point out. Any other advice that you can give. I will take as much as you can possibly muster. Currently reading "Michael Hampton- Figure Drawing - Design and Invention". Currently at the gesture drawing pages.
>>
>>2437073
I'd say that if you're following a book I'd just keep going through it. It's obvious from your drawings that you are focused on gesture, but if you're just learning gesture now that's fine. The figure with the bow and the monster above it to the left show the best gesture in my opinion.
>>
>>2437095
Got it anon. Thanks for the constructive criticism so far. I will keep practicing the book as well.

I think begginer should know proportion before study anatomy
>>
>>2437178
Proportion, anatomy and the figure are typically all lumped into one. Any respectable figure focused book will have some form of proportion chart, Peck and Loomis being examples.

you don't, depending on your medium, the process is different but most of the time you add details gradually from bigger to smaller shapes.

Salvageable, or a polished turd waiting to happen?

Spent a little over an hour so far. The scene is based off a photo from WWII, IIRC. I don't have the patience to do a 1:1 observational study atm, so you'll notice that many things are off and I'm just making stuff up.

Am also testing a custom brush I made called "rough binary", to use for sketching and/or blocking in values. Very meh, better than hard round at least. The subtle oekaki aesthetic distracts from my shit painting skills, so I'm happy about that.

Base canvas value is a 6 or 7, having made any strokes with higher values yet.

After about a year of study and practice I realised that I have no idea how to actually make a drawing. Like I just spend 2 minutes slamming down some lines that somewhat resemble the reference and then I just move on to the next reference. I tried correcting things and putting in details afterwards but it just gets really messy.
I've been spending all this time learning line control and anotomy and gesture and perspective but no book ever told me how to actually make a fucking drawing. Clearly I'm retarded and need a spep-by-step guide.
I obviously start by laying down the gesture in hard (light) pencil. Then what? Save me, please.

Surprised no ones hitting this, it looks like you need texture study's I understand the comic book style your going for however the silhouettes of the background don't read as having any texture, look up the draw a box website and do the texture excercises . again to just condense this the straight lines don't work and looks bad break them up understand the object your drawing. In this case its wood which I only know from the movie

Guys should I focus on quantitiy? No matter what I draw it comes out as a piece of shit but I read you just need to draw, the pieces get slowly together in your subconcious even if you don't feel like you're improving.
>>
>>2438601
You need to construct your heads better
The heads you're drawing currently look more like masks than heads
Heads are mostly a trimmed sphere with a jaw attached, but I'm still very beginner myself so someone better might tell you different.
>>
>>2439279
Jesus dude. Literally just draw, even when it's shit. Shit is the only thing you're going to be drawing for some time. But every time you draw you need to be self-critical and realize what you did wrong and when you draw again, try not to make the same mistake. This is literally the way to get better.
>>
>>2439279
1 like drawing
2 like, i mean the process of it
3 draw for the action itself, not just the result
4 working your pencil or whatever is fun
5 appreciate what you can in every one of your pieces
6 like the design? good. like the composition? good. like the idea? good. even if all but one aspect is shit, at least one part will be THE shit, so focus on that.
7 also appreciate it for your mistakes. shit drawings help you see what about your process, approach, and skill set needs improvement. it's like a puzzle, or a level/stat based video game. grind! grind! grind! you're royalty of the sweet loot.
>>
>>2439300
I thought it's normal to hate grinding fundamentals.
>>
>>2439301
i thought that was only on the internet?
like, in an online community and the culture that accumulates within it you have access to so much artwork that only the absolute best gets even seen, the emphasis and the only measure of success we're able to see is the attention, social exchanges, and ratings our pieces get. any experiences you or another artist have WHILE making the piece isn't something that can be expressed online and the habit of appreciating those experiences thus doesn't get passed on from one artist to another.

in RL and to a lesser extent in smaller online communities grinding can is the cake, "masterpieces" is just the buttercream icing that took for fucking ever to whip by hand but kinda justifies and celebrates the cake. then you all get together and eat it.
>>
>>2439314
I guess there is something fundamentally wrong if I hate learning fundamentals. No one is stopping me to make it fun. I would profit greatly making those tedious grinding tasks into more creative and more memorable enjoyable tasks. I need to get my head around this.

In theory it makes sense that mistakes can be greatly enjoyable.

at one point you thought it was fun or you wouldn't still be doing it. you're just as much remembering it as you are wrapping your head around it.
>>
>>2439372
Well, since they were timed, I didn't plan on smoothing, but If i was to fully render this out I'd take a soft round brush with the correct tone to smooth the transitions, while keeping the edges sharper. After that I would just go back at it with the hard round to sharpen up what spots need to be. I went in with the intent on playing with color in the second practice, the first was more of just a warm up. Thanks!

No problem man, from what I see here, you need a stronger edge control, and you could also push your values further if you wanted.I'm roughly the same level as you so I cant comment on the structure of the skull but something about the nose looks off. Maybe another anon who knows what hes talking about can verify. Best of luck!

I don't think I have the strength to endure a hard life. Is there another hobby that is productive but easy?
>>
>>2439423
You can learn at a more laid-back pace too. Especially if it's just a hobby.

It might take much longer before you "make it" tho
>>
How do I go about quick sketching a face? I can do a portrait without symbol drawing if I work slow, but when I am doing a quicker sketches it all looks like shitty symbols. Any tips? I find that it's easier when I use a conte stick and rely on using the flat side but when I use regular pencils with thin lines it's shit.
>>
>>2439441
Measure your time to take a normal sketch. Go 50% faster from there. You will suck but after some practice your neuronal connections will get faster and faster and your skill catches up with your speed. If you want to go faster just repeat the process as much as you like.
>>
>>2439396

I am in a "hobby" life drawing class my college provides for people as a free time activity. Class is only once a week and those people have a difficult school so I can assure you they don't practice that much outside of the class. But the improvement is much greater any of them had expected, even only after 1 semester all of them improved significantly. A lot of them didn't even draw before they took up the class.

Just practice smart not hard, you are a hobbyist not a pro, and even then you can transition to be more serious about it later. If you are fine with not "making it" within a year then you are a-ok without these crazy schedules and similar shit that gets posted here. Drawing as a hobby is great, don't be too preoccupied with getting to the level of professionals immediately when you are just a hobbyist. You can still have fun, impress normies, draw nice pictures for your kids etc.

Beginner here. Most everything I draw ends up flat, no matter how hard I try. What resources will help me draw 3D structures better? Loomis is nice, but is still too advanced for me.
>>
>>2439978
Basic construction, and probably life drawing. Loomis' FWAP, Blair's Cartoon Animation, anything covering perspective. But that's pretty vague, just show some art if you want real help with your issues.
>>
>>2439984
Drawing from life also creates objects with a lack of volume. It seems I am fine with basic understanding of perspective, and as such, any rectangular figures (even drawn from life) work out just fine. As soon as I move onto different shapes, it becomes clear that they are flat. I'll attach a photo shortly.

The waves are too high on the boat for the pov to be able to see the boat over them. Therefor your mind says he's above the waves. It'd have to be either a calmer sea or he should be looking mostly upward with the boat much closer and at a more extreme angle.

Also, the waves look pretty cardboard in the digital painting. On paper, it's better but the perspective is more solidly standing on shore.

There is no point in learning painting at this point. You are just adding unnecessary complexity( color ) on top of what you need to learn. Just go through Keys to Drawing since it looks like you are still symbol drawing. And pay atention to your lines, they are very messy.

You're not doing gesture. Which is good, because you shouldn't be doing gesture. A drawing should always be built from gesture, but learning to draw sholdn't be. A lot of resources fail to make that clear.
You should be working on training your eyes and arm. Throwing abstraction inbetween the two is going to fuck you over. Gesture is an advanced concept and you need to have a proper foundation in technique to actually get any use out of practicing it.

(For what it's worth, I recognise every single one of the references you used so your drawings seem to be somewhat legible.)

There is a depression between the cheekbone and the brow, at around the eye's height (dunno the name)

Your #2's eye placement is too close to the nose, or there's too much space towards the outer direction

The lips aren't wide enough

The nasion (i think it's called that anyway) is too narrow in all views except frontal

#2 and #3 have a very wildly different skull structure, #3 is very narrow with female jaw, #2 is a more round skull (too round, use a model of standard beauty to learn first) with a man jaw

I feel like in #3 the chin is too big, nose is too long, and in #2 every feature is placed a little too high up, because there's so much space from chin to mouth, but I'm not sure (beginner myself)

As long as it takes you to understand and internalize the subject matter the exercise is trying to teach.
Identify what it's trying to tell you, and once you know you can do that, you move onto something else.
You shouldn't really reach a point where you never pick up an art book again, though.

Because you're still shit at drawing, were you expecting to be able to masterfully copy your ref right away?
You get better by continuing to practice, you need to hone your ability to observe. For example, your reference is looking slightly to his right when you drew him head on (you even haphazardly drew both ears despite one ear clearly not being visible).

If you're changing your reference and drawing things you can't even see of course it's not going to look like your fucking ref.

So I do most my studies from photos or life, but I've heard from a few people that studying master paintings is a great way to learn.
Are there any painters/paintings in particular that are good to study from? I know a lot of this comes down to personal preferences but what are the ol' reliables?
>>
>>2442245

Doing master studies of Kodyboy555's work is how I became good.
>>
>>2442239
I really didn't expect to be exact, (i said my fucking question wrong) for about 4 days I attempted at this ref and for the majority of the outcome it came out wrong, or stiff, so I decided to switch my side and this is the one that kind of looks like the refrence
At this point I'm assuming I don't know how to draw large body types or the head is missing something
>>
>>2442248
Sargent, Zorn, Leyendecker, Velasquez are a few staples. Otherwise study work you enjoy and admire. Doing a master study is a little like reverse engineering.

>>

Why in pen? Is it for a study, or actual work. As actual work you shouldn't ever start in pen unless you are very confident. Also, wht's hoding you back, don't be afraid. If you mess up, then next time you'll remember and do better!
>>
>>2442352
Thank you for responding!
It is for study. I do work in pen for almost all studies due to my past of scratchy lines as well as loose unfocused lines (followed by erasing everything extra).
I believe a lot of the time I can SEE that something's wrong, but I can't pinpoint what it is or how to fix it. So I end up sitting there puzzled, trying not to form more bad habits. Thank you for the encouragement!

>>
>>2442359
Not the anon you replied to. First of all you need to be bolder and more confident with your lines, at least a little, the drawing is shaky and you are imprecise. You seem to understand forms and stuff, but idk how to explain it, you kinda trace stuff you see instead of trying to capture the look which is mainly seen in the texture the bottom left seems to be going in a better direction with this tho. I'm not sure if I worded that correctly. I recommend instead of the felt tip that you use just buy a cheap black BIC pen, you can get line weight variations with that sort of like with a pencil which lets you make light construction lines that won't be very visible and it makes it easier to draw more subtle stuff like some textures. It's sill indelible which is good for practice. However, next time either post a more evenly finished drawings, it's hard to say where you just didn't finish yet and where you left stuff blank on purpose.

Just how long would reading Sticky book take
I did like 2 of them in like a day, but I kinda skimmed over them so Im not sure if I really learnt anything?
>>
>>2442481
lol those books aren't easy. How much information have you absorbed? Do the exercises in these books to find out how much you've learnt. If you can't do these exercises properly it means that you haven't learn anything. Skimming them over is basically wasting your time, you'd better take it slow and memorize everything.
>>
>>2442481
M8 you did something wrong, the only easy book there is Perspective made easy which you can get through within a day even with exercises. But Loomis should take you a fucking while, however, it's good to skim over books before actually reading them through, it gives you perspective on what lies ahead in the book. I still read through parts of Loomis books over again and I always use it for reference so you could be reading that shit for years m8. Do excercises, copy some stuff that's harder for you to understand to get a feel for it, then apply what you learn to your own drawings. Rinse and repeat, don't hesitate go back when you're having trouble with some part of a drawing, I still do that.
>>
>>2442481

Apply the knowledge.

The point of the book isn't to flip from front to back, check the box and then move on. It's to learn what the author is telling you and learn how to apply it. Lots of them have exercises, do them.
It's easy to go "yeah I get it" but you don't know until you try. It'll surprise you what simple-looking shit you'll manage to fuck up starting out.
>>
I can draw figures when I draw in my sketchbook and keep them in proportion and even do some more detailed anatomy already. But when I go to life drawing class, I can't do the proportions right on the big paper it's really hard for me to make it right when it's big. How fix?
>>
>>2440996

all of these are way off except the second, which is still very off
>>
>>2442533

Practice. Most of it is probably just a shift in muscle memory, especially if you're doing something like drawing with your shoulder on the big paper and your wrist/elbow in the sketchbook. You probably just need to train yourself to draw bigger, if you're confident your knowledge is there.

If you can, get some big paper for your home and practice drawing bigger in your spare time.

I might be delusional, but with all the meme spraying of the man "loomis" that everyone talks about, I rarely see the joke and sadly never see the literature posted here besides a few tutorial sketched here and there. Haha thank you for the reply. I did have to re-read it 3 times, but I think I'm understanding.
I would like to be more bold and confident with my lines, but using pen is the only way I know how to force myself into combating this. I do hate SO much how imprecise/shaky my lines can be. When I move swiftly, my lines feel more organic but less precise. When I move slower, I become more precise and more shaky. I suppose practice is truly the only way to fix this, so I continue without specific line confidence exercises.

When you spoke of texture, it is my understanding that you meant I am creating tiny symbols of what I see, instead of the harmony of the piece. I'm not entirely sure how to fix this... at all. Advice?

When you see blank areas, it is my practice of trying to extract texture, while not rendering the ENTIRE thing. I love artist's renditions that encapsulate the important bits of a life study and translates in my mind, and I'm trying to learn this skill.

Unfortunately, when using bic pens, I suffer from the same consequence of using pencil :(. I end up with a bunch of lines that you can hardly see, followed by some unsure lines between them all.

Btw, I'm not trying to be difficult. I'm just explaining why I did what I did, and expecting feedback/criticisms on my thoughts and processes.
