Beginner Thread
Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.
AVOID asking unrelated questions, There is a question thread for that.
Visit the usual "Art book Thread" to find your desired books.
Do not forget to PLEASE RESIZE and crop your images before uploading them. 1kpx is fine.
Before asking "what should I read/view/study/learn," Read the f*cking sticky, it's there for a reason: >>1579290 → → → →
There's a new sticky in town! You can see it at https://www.reddit.com/comments/46sb9k/
>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.
TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

How the fuck does this dude achieve this style in his figure drawings?

>it's another "I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, have no idea what I should be doing, can't make any progress, getting mad, feeling lethargic, couldn't buy a somewhat decent drawing, JDIMSA" day
>>2424622
is this coal?
>>2424642
Sort of coal, it's conté. The shape of the sticks are so that you can make thin and thick lines, useful of big newsprint sheets like he uses.
Normal charcoal sticks wouldn't have the same effect.
>>2424655
when will they learn?
how's this?
it's supposed to be an environment so a human would be around the fourth of one of its teeth
>>2424622
This kind of figure drawing is quite common. If you want to learn more about it, Ryan Woodward has a very similar style and Mike Mattesi is also pretty close. Both have books available on gesture drawing.
>>2424642
He uses a 2B conte I think. Conte is just powder graphite or charcoal glued into a shape of a stick, or a block (in my local store they only have them thinner and cylinder shaped but I prefer blocks :( ). They have it in pretty much any art store. Also watch out because they sell pastels that look pretty much the same, I got into pastels by buying a pastel instead of conte once, they are amazing for figures as well.
>>2424663
Good work on being an asshole to this guy instead of explaining what to improve.

Thanks mate, I actually have the force books by mattesi saved somewhere but I never opened them, I'll check those dudes out.
>>2424674
Why not just use a charcoal pencil? Less wasteful and just as versatile.

You learn a bout the muscles, tendons and bones that are visible on a person. Normally surface muscles but some deep muscles show up too.
when i draw some human i have to:
stick drawing
Adding balls and sausages
make a rough nude
Add clothes
And then drawing all over these references...
Then i see the japanese illustrators on streaming and they make immediatly the rough drawing with clothes and everything
How do you do that?
>>2424812
With fundamentals
what does it mean to "push values"? I hear that a lot here as a critique but never understood it
crit plez
>>2424832
Values on a computer can go from 0 to 255. You make use of the whole range 0 to 255 or only a small range from 125 to 150 for example. If you are suggested to push values, it's a suggestion to use a wider range of values.
>>2424847
thanks senpai

It's okay. I think it's better.
>>2424840
try to define the shape of the top horn things
It's hard to tell which direction they're going. make a new layer and do some cross contour of them so you can perceive them better and try to communicate that on the main piece.
Also I know you're mirroring the background but try to think about the shadows a bit since they wouldn't be coming out like that in the mirrored side.
I like what you're doing anon keep it up

I feel this could really use some texture. also not loving the distribution of values.
I just found out thumbnail silhouettes are what I needed in my life.
I feel like I can get out of the hole I was in
How do I even capture spine flow when it's front view and it's 2d curve? If looks straight at this angle, even if I know it flows in and out in depth, but in projection it's straight and they told me that's exactly what I should avoid.
This lady gave me hell
I dont know how to talk about this.
I'm just starting with drawing. I'm not too great but I'm not sure on how to get started to seriously start "learning"
I look at reference pictures but I've never been able to draw simple shapes like my friends seem too. They can draw the pelvis or the torso and such with simple shapes, but when I try too, it just doesnt look right.
Here are some hands I did today. Yes I know they look bad even though they were all referenced.
I was hoping you guys could help me.
That being said, I AM looking at the sticky so dont worry about that.
I just cant seem to wrap my head around some concepts.
Also, i'd be willing to create a picture for you guys if you want to assess how bad I am.
>>2425083
The main problem of your sketch is the perspective, the point of interest in that pose are the legs that go forward towards the viewer but in your drawing it looks like she has stumpy legs that she spread completely to the sides.
Another thing is that this pose isn't that dynamic so it can be harder to do. I just sketched it a few times on paper. Literally just twist her shoulders clockwise a little and watch the magic happen you get a more dynamic pose. You can put the gun at more of an angle so she carries it all sexy like pic related and you get nice tension on that left arm as if she was holding onto the ground with it to not fall over. It looks better and is easier to capture.
>>2425177
>Literally just twist her shoulders clockwise a little and watch the magic happen you get a more dynamic pose.
...the problem I think is that I have no idea how to twist them forms on gesture level and that's a serious problem. I mean, I know with my head that they are supposed to comply with space but right now to me they are 2d slice of photo.
>>2425233
hol'up I suck dicks at drawing, doubly so with tablet and it's 2am, but here's a quick sketch more or less. (ignore the white lines, i fucked something up but I'm too tired to fix)
good night sweet prince and good luck
I have no idea what I'm doing lol
can someone help me out with texture? I was looking at the drawabox thing but it isn't clicking for me. Any other resources/how did you learn?
I've done Keys and Right Side, I'm working through the Draw a Box lessons including the 250 box and cylinders. A previous post here was critiqued as flat.
How good do you need to be to go to a life drawing class? What about New Masters Academy or similar? Would I be wasting my time / laughed out of the building?
>>2425272
I think new masters has a bunch of stuff aimed for beginners, I think a bunch of them are on cgpeers so you could try a couple out of you want. And I don't think you have to be that good at all to attend a life drawing session. I haven't went but from what I've heard, there's people of all skill levels there and they keep to themselves for the most part. They'll only talk shit about you if they're an asshole. Just keep a humble attitude and people will respect that you're trying to git gud.
>>2425152

>>2425305
sorry first drawing was so neat i got confused.

>>2425292
sorry, i did use reference, but i guess i need to work harder
So I used to draw a lot in higschool, all pencil and paper and ink. I wasn't very good as you can see here: http://gunlore.deviantart.com/gallery/ (oh god I haven't looked at that in over seven years kill me now.)
I want to start over, from the bottom and try to git gud, and my question is should I start with digital? That is ultimately the medium I want to be using, so is that where I should do my practices, or should I bust out the old sketchbook?
Any recommendations would be great.
>>2425377
Well fucked up and posted DnD Map instead of what I meant to. Solid.
I am noticing that the absolute top tier of artists have art where brush strokes aren't even noticeable
Am I wrong in this observation? It just seems to look so perfect and there's not really any flaws whatsoever, like pic related. At least to my eyes.
>>2425412
I see many brush strokes on the stone pillars with the faces and the characters.
They know how to light everything up and blend things so it isn't as easy to notice. also fuck hueg canvas size
Been working my way through Fun With a Pencil. How am I doing?
>>2425438
Some of these are pretty good but a few are laughable. Don't leave it up to chance, make sure you're really trying to take in the point of the concepts the book is teaching you. This picture should help. Keep it with you, always.
>>2425438
Not so good... you should try to construct your OWN head because book is teaching you about how to construct, not just copy from book.
>>2425377

Don't be discouraged. Try copying some photos or real life scenes. Impose the divided ball and plane method for constructing heads, you can learn more in loomis's book.
>>2424744
perfect, go scan and publish it
>>2424789
It's better, and on the long term you'll avoid common mistakes with digital painting. If you don't block in full values and colours, you'll be yet another idiot painting faded paintings with no form or values.
>>2425628
pretty good values
Proportioning on the cube (horizontal length too long) and orientation on the cylinder (top ellipse should be narrower) is off though.
>>2424633
>getting mad
>feeling lethargic
wow i thought i was the only one.
Sometimes when i click to open photoshop I immediately get out of my chair and pace around my house anxiously for at least 20 minutes without even thinking about it. My body just gets up while its loading.
When I finally sit down I just get frustrated and play videogames.
Wow I'm shit but I'm actually kindof enjoying myself while drawing for once. I might be onto something here.
>>2425628
Perspective on the cube is fucked, it's top and side planes look as if they are growing larger as they move away from the viewer when they should be becoming smaller. The shadows on the sphere should be softer and the core shadow more distinct.
Still pretty good though
late bloomer here, soon scribbled through my first sketchbook! I only draw from imagination and have never used reference once.
>inb4 it shows
I like to figure out stuff own my own first, but next sketchbook I'll probably look into perspective and props.

It's perfect, find an editor.
What are some exercises for putting lines down correctly the first time. Trying to work on figure and proportion is hard when your hand wont put down the line you want. I've broken the scratchy line habit but i find myself having to redraw lines several times before I get them right.
I'm studying loomis..
>>2425795
Not to bad I'd say, but the 3/4 view seems to be giving you some trouble
thoughts?
>>2425814
Please draw some redlines
>>2425790
Some simple ones involve placing evenly spaced dots on the page and connecting them and drawing straight parallel lines that get increasingly longer. I think Guptil's Rendering in Pen and Ink has some more exercises on one of the first chapters.
>>2425790
Just draw a lot and it will keep improving, be conscious of the mistakes and it will get better. You can do the line excercises from Peter Han sketching video if you really want to practice lines separately but that's so fucking dull.

That's not how it works my man. My distractions are not arbitrary. I either draw or I do not draw, there's no middleground where "if I didn't have access to this thing I would draw" because I always have the option of literally staring at a wall.
My mind is programmed for laziness, and I am very aware of the extents of my laziness. So deep-rooted is it, that even if I enjoy the act of supposedly tedious art practices, I still don't do them, because I'm too lazy.
>>2426274
just like draw more my dude
>>2426274
Remove the possibility for distraction anyway AND sit in silence staring at those walls letting your imagination distract you over and over until you sink within yourself all the way down into the deepest recesses of depression wrought from the realization that you are wasting away a second at a time. The place where you realize the objectivity, the insignificance, and then understand your place as a human and that only those who create are worth anything and those who consume and squander their time are as empty as the void conjured by idle minds.
>>2425691
progress! I just tried to follow a vilppu vid where he draws a skull and I think this came out good for a first time ever doing reference. I was out of black fineliner (which is all I've ever used) and I pulled out an ancient pencil set and gave it a shot. crits welcome
>>2426274
Force yourself to recognize drawing, and activity directly related to teaching yourself to draw (books, lectures, etc, so long as you're copying and taking notes) as the only option.

That reminds me, I've heard that you should draw the shapes and construct the object with shapes AND I've heard that you should forget what you THINK is there and just draw what you see...
i.e when people draw portraits they often draw the light and dark forms, not the 3d shapes at all... confuse

Alright thanks
Guess I will look into these lines, it's weird
I don't know what to do with arms when drawing characters. I can draw them but I can't find a pose that looks natural or normal
>>2427279
Take frames from movies where you see natural arm poses and study gesture in general. Unless you're T-posing the arms while the rest of the figure is balanced well and has good gesture, you'll probably gain something from studying more gesture. Contrapposto creates natural places for the hands to go and if the character has an outfit there are pockets and/or props to clutch or rest your hand on. There's also just the default slightly bent state of the arm and hand, which is more natural than a straight arm and knife hand.
>>2427116
the lines are wobbly because:
1) not updated drivers
2) your arm is wobbly
3) you use very small tablet and don't have minimum of stabilization set on to counteract wobblyness

>>2424211
I tried to get into drawing a few months ago with Edwards' book but there were many materials required and I was using the spanish translation which is kind of lousy and didn't make it very clear how to use them. I gave up after copying the knight riding the horse, I managed to copy it mostly right but some of the proportions were all wrong, seemingly because I didn't use the viewfinder.
I guess I should get the book in english from amazon because some of the instructions to make the viewfinders and some other stuff were basically translated into nonsense.
>>2427775
People actually make/use the viewfinder? kek
>>2427782
An acquaintance who is a drawing teacher familiar with drawing on the right side of the brain told me that the reason the drawing's proportions were wrong were because I didn't use the viewfinder.
How is my hand?
And recommendations on what to draw? Whenever I try to draw something my mind just goes blank and I can't think of anything to draw. Even when looking for references I don't know what to look for or where to start drawing. I see a picture and I get discouraged because it seems like there's so much to draw and my ability is too bad to actually be able to do it.

Not terrible, but the thumb is a bit wonky.
As for stuff to draw I've been trying to purely grind refs and its really hard. But I started just using them as what they are, references, and using them to convey my own ideas. I'm still super garbage but at least I'm actually drawing consistently now. Or just draw fruit. Fruit is simple.
How's the construction on this sketch? I'm not sure what to draw so I've been drawing various pics of animals and bugs as practice.

you seem to be drawing the templates for the faces without really understanding what they are for? the template's the face you're about to construct, not an estimation of what you think it should look like.
i don't like being "that guy", but reading the first loomis book in the sticky really helped me construct faces. i recommend it.
Starting on Loomis' head/hands reading about basic construction; the way he draws perfect circles baffles me. Obviously I can draw a circle but nowhere near perfect, how important is it to know how to draw good circles at this stage?
>>2427872
Fun with a pencil says you don't need perfect circles and shows how to constructs heads with imperfect circles.
Dunno how it is for his more advanced books.
>>2427872
it really isn't, just make sure it's circular enough to not be confused for an amoeba or narrow ellipse.
How do I get my motivation back? How can I stay focused onthe drawing at hand?
>>2427808
good enough, you already have the planes, decide a lightsource and start adding some simple shading to make it feel more 3D
>>2427872
use your pencil very lightly and when drawing the circle go over it a few times, your hand will start correcting by itself, then if you ended up with something too messy you could erase a little
>>2427795
As anon said, use ref but don't just copy, construct what you see and go from there, maybe decide another light source, or change the proportions, basically just have fun, you can end up with something that doesn't look exactly like the ref, but still looks good and make sense on its own
If a ref is too busy, for example a city photo, just pick something from the ref, a building or a person, you dont have to draw everything (specially things that you havent yet studied properly)
good luck
I just don't know if I got this gesture thing down

Are my lines acceptable for someone who's been doing Peter Han exercises for half an hour every day for two weeks?
I've had severe tendinitis in my right thumb for the past year, I just got a shot that allows me to move it for a month before I go into surgery. After 2 days of having a right thumb, this is what I got. Be gentle (I'm a cripple)

Theyre pretty good
At that point I'd say start applying your straight lines to actual drawings. Make shapes, guidelines, and horizon lines with them, anon. Two birds with one stone.
wtf is wrong with my brain?
Trying this exercise, but when i try to go on the mirror part i like go full autistic...

You do. I love how clean this looks.
How the FUCK does skin colour work? Any resources on this?

If you turn your painting into grayscale it has such a narrow value range no matter what colors you put on it wont work.
The loose rule for men is that foreheads are more yellow, cheeks and noses are more red and lips/mouth regions are more blue/green.
Keep painting from life m8
>>2428292
Thanks for the tip on values, should have converted it to greyscale to check.
My main issue with working in colour is choosing colours that actually look good/natural, though. Do you have any advice on that?
>>2428294
Colours are all relative, instead of picking the individual colour of the shadow, try to think of how the shadow differs from the object itself, is it more saturated? is it actually darker? is it warmer or cooler? etc. Look at the boundary between colours instead of the colour itself.
Establish relationships between them and the result should be more cohesive. In a way its similar to establishing 2d relationships when you're trying to copy an image.
Picking the first colour will always suck though, a good tip I've remembered from /ic/ is that you will rarely encounter anything beyond the 50% saturation level in real life.
>>2428299
Good pointers, thanks again.
Think I'm getting the hang of this g-nib pen and making a decent gradation scale for crosshatching. Got alot of other strokes to do this with still.
>>2424211
Sketching and blocking stuff
>>2427913
If you're doing those sketches atleast finish them instead of drawing a few random lines to show an 'arm' or 'legs'. The only thing in those sketches that seems about right is the general shape, otherwise they just look like scribbles on a page.
>>2428422
>what are gesture drawings
bruv
>>2428351
Well you're clearly getting better, assuming the top one was the first one and the bottom one is the most recent.
>>2424211
Did I cast the middle shadow correctly?
Not sure if this is the right thread for this but:
Which ones of these colors shouold I mix to get the skin tones on the right?
I tried adding the lighter brown to the pink/peach one and it worked just fine for the lighter tones, but the darker ones ended up looking unatural, like the skin of someone who does spray tanning.
Please help, this is verry frustrating

I've drawn over 200 in the past week, I'm burned out and I think my creativity is burned out as well.
It's very demotivating, maybe I'm just being a pussy.

You're definitely arrogant enough to make it as an artist.
>>2428731
Coolio, the fuschia type color is a bit garish, dunno if you were using ref, but it works well in the unexpanded portion.
>>2428796
Yeah I used this as a reference for the color and pattern practice
Total beginner. Just wanted to know if I'm on the right path. A couple of these were actually a little fun to draw.

Those are much too small. How can you hope to draw faces on most of those?
What would /ic/ recommend as far as bound sketchbooks that can hold up to gouache go?

fucking show us where it went wrong, we dont go guess work for people in the beg thread.
>>2428724
I ended up feeling pretty good about this one. How do you paint smoke?
>>2428913
I will try that next time.
Are these loomis cartoon things even worth spending time on? I guess they are kinda fun.
Also my circles are getting pretty decent
First attempt at non-referenced figure drawing. What's the damage?
>>2429058
Just until you get an idea of form and using basic shapes. You seem to get what he was getting at rather than just copying the drawings out of the book with no regard for the actual point, so don't worry about spending ages doing Loomis faces. Just apply the concept to other things.
>>2429083
First: Take a better picture and reduce file size. Even if it was good it'd look bad presented like that.
It's a hairy-lined contour drawing. Get the hang of basic shapes and construction. Once you can draw good spheres, cylinders, cubes, etc, start converting the body into those shapes and using them. I'm sure you've seen those manikins, think like that.
>>2429083
lines are bad, waist too skinny, boobs too high up, arms too lumpy, hands too small, thighs too big, leg perspective fucked up, feet bad perspective
Basic anatomy wrong, read up.

is there anything besides /ic/ online where i can git gud without dying coz of cringe, like subreddits or some shit?
How do you construct a head and why do you do it that way? Drawabox starts with a cylinder, hampton with a sphere and proko with a sliced sphere. I'm sure there are 10 more ways, but I'm gonna have to choose one to use. If you wanted to communicate the position, tilt and lean of a head as efficiently as possible, how would you simplify the head?
O-one day i'll be gud enough to draw porn for cash.
>>2429159
if you haven't already done so then you should learn the anatomy of the head and neck. It's helped me out a lot with head construction and gave me a much better understanding of the proportions/placement of eyes, nose and mouth.
>>2429159
>but I'm gonna have to choose one to use.
DaBox isn't a cylinder, it's an ovoid shape extended from a circle.
As far as choosing, you really aren't, honestly. The sliced ball and plane or the box or cylinder all serve as a base to carve the planes of the face, and if you understand the proportions in a more flexible way than just loomis, you could probably build a head on any 3D form you wanted within reason.
To answer your question, I use a box for views I'm less comfortable with, or the ball and plane for everything else, especially with the figure involved. The box is especially good for placing proportions in perspective. Check out Danny Galliote's NMA lecture, "Drawing the Structure of The Head" or something to that effect.

>>2429173
In Hampton's CGMA lecture videos (which looks like the image there), he basically teaches enough about the anatomy on the head to get through the practice.
>>2426265
Wow, all those wasted years. Thanks man.
>>2424840
Love it. Reminds me of HR Giger kind of. Get an airbrush.
>>2429159
Those are all just ways they all do it, there isn't an objective "right" way to start blocking a head, and as you do it more you'll likely develop your own. I use an ellipse for angles I'm familiar with to start with, and go full loomis/proko for weird angles I'm less comfortable with. You just use whatever works for you.
Think of blocking like sculpture (and if you don't know what that means, watch a sculptor make a head out of cube of clay)—you just need to start with something simplistic to carve and mold the more complex shapes of the human head out of.
>>2430142
Not that guy, but do you mean an oval as in an oval for the cranium, or an oval representing the whole skull, or an oval representing the face plane? It's cool to hear about other's processes.
>>2430142
whole skull, but I usually start with super exaggerated ones that are super long or mostly circles anyway, so I don't usually follow then exactly. For profiles I start with a flat line for the face and slap a weird circle/triangle shape on it.
I'm not an expert or anything, but here's a page from my sketchbook with some of the head blocks drawn in. With bigger drawings+more time, the heads and faces can get more realistic (and a different eye shape. I tend to go for the big eyes when sketching), but it should get the point across.
I dont want to be an artist, my dream job is storyboard artist. wbu guys/gals

not drawn from reference, decent hand construction, face on the right planes, probably better than you. Ya I give it a pass.
>>2432397
Nigger you'd give a cylinder in perspective a pass, do you think anyone cares what your ass thinks?
Those lines and the sex organs look like shit, the breasts look flat as fuck, the left hand is lazily hidden behind the leg and misplaced, the tongue has no form. Someone else could say more, but you'd rather he get it from the drawthread that you're directing trash into. Someone failing with regards to basic form and line quality belongs in the beginner thread.
