You basically find the pattern to how they tackle the basics. How they stylize anatomy, how they use line/colour/shapes.

Take things from their work that you really like and try to emulate that in your own work, you do not want to completely copy unless you want to compare your skill level to theirs (which is kind of disingenuous since you're not making any decisions for yourself, simply trying to be as accurate to the original as possible).

I know you are trying to keep it simple but everything under the belt looks really flat.
I would show more detail in the clothing.

I also am not fond of the brush you used behind her.
Perhaps leave the background plain as it is with the stripes but hand draw some cute shapes like stars?

The lips are straight up symbol drawing.
You could say you haven't rendered them yet but the shape looks otherwise.
Same with the nostrils. Look at nose ref and it looks nothing like that. Where is the form?
Hands are a mess too. You need to study their mass more.
But You have colors going well. Your values aren't great but the thumb reads nicely.

Just wanted to share some feels.

I applied to CalArts Character Animation for the second time this year. Last year I got rejected because I made a lot of small mistakes in my observational drawings and royalty fucked up the sketchbook by minimally drawing from life. This year I took the advice of one of the portfolio reviewers I met online and cut the bullshit. I sent two sketchbooks with about 80% reportages/gestures/general life drawings and only dedicated a few pages to story ideas and cartoons. My observational drawings were purely honest with only a hint of stylization/design. I also only included one character drawing in the portfolio and that's it. I followed this persons advice 100%, sent them work frequently, and was told I was making great progress. They even said they were glad to hear I was still applying when I disappeared for a few weeks during a crazy busy semester of college.

I feel good about my progress but I weary I'll actually get in this year. I know most people shit on CalArts here a lot, but it's important to me I get in since it's really the only thing I've been focused on for a few years now. Most of my heroes went there, my friends are going there, and I'd just like to be apart of all that.

The decision comes in a few weeks so wish me luck.

Everyone has different body proportion but your drawing has a nigger arm. It's probably the position and the size of the hand.
The torso looks really awkward to me as well. It looks like somebody punched her so hard from the top and spine got crushed a little.

I also noticed I need to commit to more drop shadows, for instance I tried to implement them to a give a proper volume to the left deltoid, I also changed the face a bit and fix/polish some areas of her body.

Btw I'm glad it doesn't look elongated I started using glasses for the 1st time and it feels like I'm taking crazy pills, everything looks way wider now :S

I'm glad it helped with the body, but I'm still waiting you to modify the head more, you've draw highlights on the nose so it looks more like a pig, it's pointing upwards, that's worse than before
the eyes are improved, but the face is still designed on a box, if you push the direction of the exterior part of the eyebrows, they follow a diferent shape, and if they go up, it's more femenine
the decoration on the dress under the arm pit breaks the shape of her back, making a weird effect that you don't need

the hand should be placed a bit more closer to the arm

you might want to show her left arm ahead touching some hologram piano or something, draw the screens flat and deform them with transform>perspective, it would add meaning

push core shadows and add a soft rim light from behind
the body under the boobs might need to turn some degrees at the bottom (to the left), as right now the belly is too forward compared to the boobs

I still prefer my taste for the head/face :/ It's more kr0npr1nzt tho

Nose is huge. Eyes are flat. Everything looks too symmetrical. Ears look like they're coming out of his cheeks rather than at the side of his head. That's not where clavicles go or how they work.

There's a lot that's way off man, but main thing for now would be to work on those forms and wrapping the space around them. Right now it's all very flat. Firez might be forever lost in the uncanny valley but at least he has basic forms down.

Ears are not supposed to be that visible in frontal view, think about them in perspective. Whole image is flat, especially the hair. Shadows are weird making the hair look like its floating. The neck needs to be longer and the trapezius muscles definately dont go to the top of the neck. Moreover the values are off, you should add more darker and lighter tones, not just middle tones. I would have suggested beginner thread, but I'm not a fucking asshole, keep working I'll be happy to crit.

Thanks, I shifted the ear a little bit more and I think it's probably the best I can do. Next time I need to render that whole cheekbone and ear connection area before I paint any hair over it. Also yeah I'm trying to find a balance with color. I tend to start off way too over saturated so I'm trying this method of starting washed out and building into saturation. So far it seems easier for me to build up rather than tone down, but I'll try to make sure not to leave it looking too washed out. Thanks for the feedback!

Different anon here, but to be brutally honest you're quite up yourself man. Being such a cunt to beginners and shouting them to leave to the beginner thread when you're not even that competent yourself isn't a good trait.

Putting lesser artists down is a terrible thing to do. It doesn't make you look better at all, even if you use your name on here. I know of a few other professionals who lurk on here and like giving help to people who need it, sometimes just using a different phrase to explain something can help someone along the path to getting better and that's awesome. But seeking attention like you've been doing, and putting down other people who aren't even that far beneath your own level, is not a good thing to do.

I don't know if you're a hobbyist or aiming for a career, but take it from me, there are very few top tier artists out there who act like cunts. To become the best you need to understand how much you still have left to learn, which is why so many of the best are such modest people who like to help others. And from a networking standpoint, if you're an asshole, even online or on facebook or wherever, you can and will get blacklisted from certain studios.

The shadows are supposed to be like that but fwiw there are 2 shadowing schemes an overlay layer with gray tones lay down with an aliased lasso tool and other done vía a second overlay layer un which you use a huge software brush with a very desatured blue and a somewhat satured orange these two layers go above the base color ofc, hope that makes sense.

hey! i was a little vague earlier when i suggested picking a more direct/angled light source, but i didn't mean to just kick up the contrast, lol!! i feel that generally, when things are lit directly from the front it tends to flatten them out a bit because you don't really get to see the forms defined by their shadows.

lighting the shot so that everything reads well is important for both the audience and the artist-- the audience so they can quickly and easily tell what they're looking at, and the artist so they can more quickly and easily make decisions with their work. for example, here you have a lot of highlights all around the face. the larger highlight on the eyes is on the top right, but on the lower lip it's on the left, and it's all scattered about on the hair. it makes it look like guess work, which it very well might have been, but if you choose a better light source then there's no guesswork involved! if the light is to the upper right, then the upper right is where the high lights go. i find it also helps solve ambiguous areas like the neck, because then it just becomes a matter of a cast shadow from the head on top of the rest of the body.

and don't be afraid to go into the bright whites and the darker greys, too. putting down such harsh contrasts often scare away beginners because it won't look right at first, but once you have all the values working together they won't seem so out of place. consider running a google search for paintings that use Rembrandt lighting and doing some studies of how they handle light to clearly define the face. bonus points if the painting is actually done by Rembrandt!! here's a rough paint over for clarification, hope this helps somewhat
