I have a lot more practice than knowledge when it comes to drawing. What am I doing wrong, and how do I make my drawings look natural instead of stilted and rigid?

That's not very helpful. You should draw over his drawing to show him your awesome skills.

nhaa... im doing my homework right now
One thing I've learned is that your mindset is very important. Confidence, once you develop it, will show in your drawings. You should get yourself to a point where you can throw down lines without much care, because hey, if you fuck up, you can always draw a million more till it looks better.
Other than that just read books and practice and shit
