What the fuck man, there's no need to make a new thread until the old one gets lower. It won't bump but it's going to be there for fucking ever, it's still usable. Christ, there are 4 drawthreads open right now.
>>
>>2279840
I'd like to wait until those threads were on page 10 before making a new one myself, but there are others that are convinced that a new thread is needed as soon as the old one reaches bump limit. Better I make the thread than they.
>>
>>2279844
Well, at least you did it right, and hopefully nobody will argue about he-who-trips. Still man, this is an insane development in the conducting of these threads.

A few threads ago, I was asking for suggestions and someone said Malthael. I put it off a while because I couldn't think of a good approach. He has no face, and not much color to speak of, so I didn't know what to do with it and I'm sorry if this looks pretty uninspired but I'm starting to get into it now. Just wanted to let you know I didn't ignore you or anything.

He looks like a potato.
>>
>>2279863
Yah, I'm not happy about it either, but maybe if I and other anons keep hold of the reigns he'll take the hint.

>>2279865
Had to get it right sooner or later, and I'm sorry I botched up the last one.
>>
>>2279885
I wanted to suggest that we kind of band together and if a thread is started by that-one-tripper that we all just quietly make a different one and use that. I never thought I'd be one of the people against him but it seriously fucks up the whole first half of the thread every time, and we've been burning through these threads faster than ever.

>>
>>2279892
Possiably the extra chromosome, but the actual color? I can see your going for dirt but Ya gotta center it in some places, and some more contrast from darker and lighter areas of dirt, because currently it looks like one pick smudge, or a potato. I'd also suggest to defund the nose, lips, brow, and cheeks better he currently looks smooth and dirty, like a potato, unlike rough rigid and dirty like a barbarian. Just try to define the face features then report back for further instructions.

Nah fuck them, a draw thread is a draw thread. Good on you for making art and posting it.

I'll comment on this one. >>2279911

You aren't quite ready to convince us for this caliber of illustration. However brownie points for doing it anyway! Don't stop just cause it's above your skill level. Actually it's good that you made this. This image highlights the many things you can start working on. Particularly 3d forms. The image looks overall flat. I'd say you're faking the funk a bit with gradients and "pillow shading" and your use of colors are not working, they don't fit the environment. It might be ok if this was just a concept art for the modeler to work on. But as a stand alone illustration, no go. There is no clear light source.

When you study and practice, don't bother with coloring or shading complex things like this. Set this image aside and work on drawing body parts or 3d objects. Think of the 3 dimensions of physical space, x y z. You have to go through this until it makes sense.

Material/texture/backgrounds/color. Save that for another time, your homework is to make boxes and spheres. Feel free to reject my input, I honestly use these critiques to help determine what to practice for the day.

whenever you do a landscape make sure you add a small guy in the extreme foreground with a flowy red scarf, either leaning on a stick, or holding a sword, or riding a horse. that way the viewer can really get an idea of how colossal the landscape is. it just doesn't read as huge as you want it to right now without that.

hahahahahahaha... The red scarf is really a trend.
>>
>>2280350
how to use colors like that
>>
>>2280390
I choose the color scheme before hand, picking up complimentary colors and something to contrast the rest (but nothing with too much contrast) lightly wash the areas the main lightsource hits with color dodge blending mode, using a mid tone of the color of the lightsource (be careful not to overuse). For the shadows in I chose a warm dark red as opposed to the cold red color coming from the lightsource, shadows closer to lightsource more vibrant and darker and further away lighter and less vibrant.

Also i would suggest using gamma color blending in your photoshop: Edit > Color Settings > More Options > Blend RBG colors using gamma <-- put 1.00 as variable
This makes color blending results less muddy, some may not like this but definitely worth the try. I might make a tutorial about colors when I feel comfortable and good enough with them myself.

About the feet I agree, but I'm not so sure about arms. For a character presentation standpoint maybe it's better that it's not much foreshortened?

>>2280495
Generally when a picture is started, it lacks things that a finished picture would have, because it isn't finished yet. Form is often one of these missing things, because the picture may start out as just a gesture or a block in, and for some people it's easier lay in a vague idea of where they want everything to go before they start defining shapes and lighting. Something you should also be aware of is the fact that there's a difference between the kind of symbol drawing a beginner does and abstracting form for stylization. By the way I know the "only op would defend op" meme is strong these days, but you keep replying to us as if I was him but I'm very much my own person and resent being lumped in with another being, I deserve my own space thank you very much.

Some of these posts are embarrassing garbage. You're trying to be tough/blunt but failing at solid crits. You want to be the asshole more than you like putting effort into these. That's why I tell the artist he should step away from here for a bit. And don't post each stage on here.

Nice effort getting propotions and rendering to look realistic. What is bothering me the most is that the references you are using have different light sources so it wont look coherent as a group portait. But maybe you were going for the collage look, it doesn't matter as much then.
>>
>>2280637
You should try drawing the hole body with attempt at body anatomy before asking for a critique on gesture, proportions and anatomy. Besides the fact that it looks like you referenced an actionman doll it looks like you have a decent idea of the volumes of the body, except the shoulders.

>>2280477
Try to go darker in the foreground, the value range limits the use of darks there, and it would really help to make it pop..

Well I can say that the pectorals are a bit overdimensioned, but if you like them that way its fine.
>>

Are you using a ref for the face man? I feel like I recognise the small mouth and upturned nose from a cosplayer or something. Has a bit of a bitchy looking face but if that's what you're going for then fair enough. Also not sure on what's happening with the feet, the leg on our left seems longer, but another anon already pointed that out.

Good to see you posting again either way.

Does that mean like overly defined? I'm trying to lead up towards him wearing this puffy vest thing and I think it's sorta creating a disparity between structural lines for his anatomy and lay in lines for the clothes.
>>
>>2280805
What I meant was the they are very large, but definition goes with the overdimension of muscles as well. Doesn't mean its unrealistic, just not as common in people that dont body build, I think, im by no means an expert anatomist, i can only reference my own meakly body. btw If you are intrested, you should look in to how the pectorals introlock with the the arms. Right now they are kinda deattached from the arms and don't stretch with the arm that is pulling uppwards. But these are just details.

And if I understod your last sentence right you oughta draw clothes untop of the structural lines of the gesture, but nor necessarly the anatomy if that is not somthing that will show through.
>>
>>2280783
I like the one to the left the most. Got the best color and design imo.

Ah okay, gotcha. I've pulled up some reference for the shoulder/pec connection like you mentioned, I'm going to study these and see if I can get that to look better, it's been a problem area for me for a good while. Thanks for helping me catch things like that, when you stare at something so long it gets hard to see it objectively. I'll post the results later, possibly before I finish it fully depending on how it goes.

Working on a character designs as fanart for a podcast. This is supposed to be a mecha pilot plugsuit. The character is an exiled prince from a declining empire that vaguely resembles ancient Greece. He served in the empire's military medical corps in a war that ended a decade ago, but now works as a mecha pilot for a small, tight-nit group of mercenaries.

Any design tips would be helpful! I would like the suit to feel more sci-fi than it does right now.

You're gonna want to fix the proportions on the right, his arms are long, his legs are short and his torso looks pretty elongated as well. Kinda looks like how a gorilla or chimp standing upright would be proportioned. Also not feeling that red, might want to try either a more vibrant or deeper hue, something closer to blood red or crimson.

so what is this character for? just curious. there doesn't seem to be anything particularly "warlocky" about her. I think "Magic" and "evil" but I don't associate the word Warlock with this. Maybe try to be more literal with the words War and Lock? Or is this design for a grander scene that makes her design make sense.

if not you should really try to nail down the specificity of a given concept and a deft clever approach to the subject matter before you start getting carried away with clothing and accessoriez.

Nice, I do like that more, though if you have the colors on different layers I'd recommend playing with the color scheme a bit more, or moving some of the colors around a bit. Also right now I think you have either too much or too little of the white, threw together (pic related) as a suggestion of how you might balance it. Hope that helps.

The whole point of sight-size is that it makes a side-by-side comparison very easy to do and therefore it is easy to critique as well. But then you go and post a photo that has them different sizes, angled differently, and the cast is cut off by the edge of the photo.

Anyways, your lighting set up looks pretty shit. For a beginner exercise like this you might want to get a stronger light source so the lights and shadows are more separated and easier to see.

Maybe try to think a bit more about what you are painting. You have a samurai with white facial features and a weird veil thing that makes no sense and he's holding...a stick...and standing on a blank background. Like it feels like a random assortment of things tossed together and not a cohesive idea and painting.

Then the execution of it is also weak. His anatomy is super wonky, his facial planes are messed up, you are trying to do that low contrast thing on the face by getting rid of dark accents, but you lack a reason for it. The composition isn't that interesting and you shouldn't even be worrying about a border at this stage.

try adding more contrast. make the area below his helmet your darkest area, make it nearly pure black. reflection lines are pleasing, black and white reflections that extend across the form of the armor almost like contour lines. The form looks nice so far, finish it up. I like the embossed design.

These are pretty nice. I think though that they are rather stiff and lifeless at the moment.

Basically I feel that you are relying too much on 2d observation and a mechanical breakdown into straight lines. While you can still do this approach you should also in my opinion be thinking of hte volumes and the gesture and flow of the poses at the same time.

I did some drawovers to hopefully show this. Mostly they are rather minor changes, but those minor things are important. There are a few small proportion errors in your drawings and some things that need to be downplayed or simplified more, while others need more emphasis. Sorry that the linework and hatching is so sloppy, I never got the hang of digital for drawing. Hope it helps!

You've made her very pink. Typically skin will have more yellow in it and be slightly less saturated.

I also think you can pay more attention to proportions. Don't be afraid to go darker in the shadows either.
>>
>>2281026
This is terrible anon. It's all muddy, the features on the face are all crooked, the values too dark. You have to go back and study faces, planes of the face, values, then try to block in paint with a hard brush.
Are you using the blur tool to blend paint? Don't do it, it looks awful.

I'd say throw this away and start again, but if you really need to turn this in, as a short term solution I would say align the eyes, and align the mouth with the nose (how the hell can you make this mistake?) then put in white on the lightest places.

What are you trying to show? Everything at the moment is competing for attention. You have a bright face with glowing eyes, a very bright boob highlight, a stupidly saturated green, a glowing blue sword, and the brightest point in the painting is her thigh. Everything in your painting is screaming for attention. Figure out what you want the focus and then downplay the other aspects of the image to support that.

The foreshortening also doesn't read that well, especially on the arm. The rimlight is inconsistent and too "outline". The light source seems to be low but she doesn't have the usual underlighting thing going on--where are the cast shadows? And the sword is pointing out of the image. Design-wise the silhouette and pose are boring shapes and the armor and handguard on the sword are also boring. What is her pose anyhow? Looks like she wants to fistbump the viewer. The loin cloth thingy also is rendered the same way as the rest of the armor so has a metal appearance. What's the glow? Is there a doorway behind her? Is it a random glow? What are the walls made of?

tl;dr: it isn't well thought out

Haha nah, i just want to get better at quickly drawing people from life, and I think its a really good exercise for training identification of shadow shapes, among other things.

This painting is a tier better than the other. The light-source question still applies. I feel like you could shift the gems and darks a little toward mauves or violets to make the palette more interesting. Also, the floating stone in the staff is interesting and could command just a little more attention than it does now.

Glad you like my earlier crit.

This one's way better. There's a clear focal point and I like how muted the rest of the image is so the warm lights really pop out. The compostion and general impact is much stronger too. I'd give the other image like a 3/10 and this one maybe a 7/10.

I feel the design is still a bit weak. Like the branch things on his forehead are really basic. How can you make their shapes cooler? Maybe look at antlers or go outside and find some cool bush with thorns and see how they grow or something. What about the designs on the armor--you have little S squiggles, but if you look at real armor decorations the designs were typically much more intricate (look up filligree). Often they were based on plants too which fits the theme of the forest keeper. His staff and hand are a letdown imo. The floating staff thing is neat but can be pushed a bit further. Is it rock? wood? make the materials read, maybe add some runes pr carvings or a subtle glow, just some extra layer of interest to it. His hand is terrible. It's three potato lumps. Get the drawing of the fingers correct about how they wrap the form of hte staff, and get some better shapes as right now they are lumpy and the same colour, size, and texture as the floating bit on the staff top which makes a repetitive and boring design. Trees in the bg looks very unfinished. I think looking at some ref and getting some more accurate shapes/silhouettes back there will help the image a lot. I just noticed the gems around his neck, I didn't even see them at first because their material reads so poorly. Find some ref for them and get their behaviour with light more accurate.

Okay basically now I think I'm repeating myself a bit. The main things I notice are weak design and weak materials. The design is mostly shape design. You need more interesting shapes and a greater variety of shape.

Holy shit dude.

First up thank you so much for taking the time for all these draw overs, I really really appreciate it, thank you.

Second, I totally get what your saying with the stiffness/lifelessness and the lack of volume- I have been feeling dissatisfied with my work recently for these exact reasons, and frustrated because I didn't know how to fix them.

So I take your point on approaching the figure with gesture and volume in mind- I can see the difference this has made in the draw-overs.

I know my gestures are lacking, I've been avoiding my gesture drawing classes in favor of ones with longer posses (I knew this would bite me) so I'll take some more of those! I know how I can work on my gesture drawing (though any recommendations for books etc. to check out on this would still be super appreciated)

but as for working on my volume im not so sure? I can see where you've altered my shadow shapes to better illustrate the major masses ect. like the first females chest/rigcage area, or downplayed superfluous details such as the complex shapes ive put around the greater trochanter in both of the first two figures (detracting from the form of the pelvis). Also in the adjustment of all of the shoulders, delts and claicles hahahaha FML. So what I'm saying is from what I could read of the draw overs, alot of my issues with volume look like they stem from a lack of anatomical knowledge? I feel like this is also indicated by your light construction which places in a ribcage/sternum/pelvis/ASIS - but I dontt know, what do you think I should work on to improve my volume?

Anyway all that aside, I really appreciate you taking the time for that crit! I'll be punching out my next figures with volume and gesture in mind!

It depends what you mean by "use".

If you're literally taking the picture and implanting it into your own, of course you should.

If you're copying the image in its entirety for anything other than practice, again, I think you should.

If you're inspired by an idea, style, pose or whatever and are using an image as an aid to create your own piece, then no, you shouldn't.

That's my take.

You need to diversify your noses. They are all the same inward curving Asian girl noses, but even then, they always feel too concave.

With this picture in particular, look at the lack of continuity between the nose in the top face and the bottom right. They look like different people.

You really should focus on varied nose forms for a while, it is the consistent issue throughout all your images that makes most of them feel off.

>>2282398
Oh nice thanks for responding! Sometimes it can be discouraging if I take time to help someone out and I get no response, so can't even tell if they saw it.

In terms of your questions...well desu I have recently become more cautious with handing out too much advice because I think there are so many different approaches in art that are all valid, and most advice will close off one or another approach which may end up being harmful to the student.

But since you seem to like my earlier comment about volume....the thing to do is learn a bit of construction. There are two (main) approaches to figure drawing. 2D shapes (Tony Rider, Bargue, sight-size) and 3d construction (Russian Academy, Hampton, etc). I think getting mroe of that construction knowledge will help a ton with your forms, even if you stick to a more 2d system the 3d forms will be in your mind and help you interpret what you see. So uh, there's not much more to it than that. I've studied just about every figure drawing book out there and taken pieces from each and I recommend you do the same--Hampton, Bridgman, Vanderpoel, Vilppu, Bammes, Loomis, Hogarth, Mentler, Reilly Method, etc. and even just studying the work of artists you like with good form like Jeff Jones, Francis Vallejo, Achadobu, 0033, John Watkiss etc. Probably most of my knowledge on construction comes from Bridgman and a self-study of the Reilly Method by reverse engineering drawings of people who use it. Reilly method imo has some very good parts and some bad parts though, and I would be cautious to lean on it too much. Oh, and life drawing.
>>
>>2282549
Cont.

I also have some uh, unconventional thoughts on gesture. Basically I didn't believe in it for a few years (long story, but it is based on the fact it is a modern exercise of around 100 years and many great masters didn't actually do it and the current Russian Academy don't teach it). Now I've switched to thinking it is very important but is not a beginner exercise (most people think it is) and should be taught only to intermediate artists. I also don't like the way it is typically taught in schools and I think most gesture lessons are flawed. I also think good gesture comes from good understanding of action and from intent, not so much from grinding large numbers of drawings as is common. Not to say my gesture game is very good, and I don't practice it ever really. But I do think about it a fair bit. So hm, advice-wise I think just look for the bigger actions in the pose, and about how the forms connect and relate to each other. The Reilly "string of pearls" approach is a simple way of looking at things, works quite well in most cases. But a lot of the action too is the INTENT of the pose. What is the person doing? How can you show it? This is also why I feel a lot of life drawing classes don't teach sufficiently because the models strike dumb poses they think are "artsy" and they lack real intent.

But of course all this is my opinion. I once again suggest trying out every method and taking pieces of what you like. Some people LOVE the bean method for gesture or Hampton's approach or Nicolaides approach...personally I don't much like most of them. I think it might be better to study the sketches of actual working artists. Find the early studies for paintings that artists made and study it, don't just study what a guy in a classroom is telling you about gesture. You'll find some interesting things you may not expect. And it will be a more practical approach to gesture that you can actually use, instead of seeing it as a warmup exercise or whatever.
>>
>>2282549
Oh no wonder the crits were good then. If it was the FFG discussion thread that was me which also explains why the advice was good. I actually talked to you when tehmeh streamed like 2 years ago, and got your skype. I never added you though. Don't remember the tehmeh stream discussion, but maybe that happened. I went on his stream once or twice a long time ago but I don't recall conversations so much.

I don't use skype these days much and am off fb, but feel free to email me if you ever wanna chat or whatever. I may take a day or two to respond or may respond instantly. I'm a bit flakey on that stuff but will typically take the time to respond at some point.

I want him to draw more like the other image, he won't learn anything if he doesn't challenge himself with difficult angles and just stays in his comfort zone painting static portraits.
>>
>>2282679
Not sure why you are shitting on it. You can find Sargent pics with the brightest value on the forehead. It tends to happen when you have a large planar mass with a strong light source from above. In any case it is miles ahead of the other one where everything was a focal point (and therefore nothing was).

>>2282707
Good point about pushing out of comfort zones, but at the end of a day an image is successful or not based on other factors. Some of the greatest paintings of all time are incredibly simplistic and don't have any crazy angles or unconventional things, but they do the ordinary things in a very well handled and beautiful way with elegant solutions. The first image had many issues that hadn't been solved properly whereas the second one had successfully resolved those same issues. He should definitely be trying more images that push his boundaries, but needs to try to find ways to correctly show what he wants to show and organize and design the images to be effective. Hope that makes sense.

Any tips for how to get a sort of rotting flesh look?
I am struggling with achieving that right now.

Thanks m8.
I ended up with this.

Not so sure about my attempt at making the greenish rot though.

Well, I dunno if I managed to really make these look partially rotting, but I do like the color scheme anyways.

Glad my critique helped. I i feel like tou might want to bump out the ass a bit more though not make it bigger per say but more pronounced. In that position it almost looks like hes clenching his ass which i think might make it stick out nore idk

His midsection looks really long

ctrlPaint videos, Scott Robertsons How to Render.
Photo studies and the like help a lot with learning to paint and see color properly as well.

Maybe change the angle she's laying at so its not foreshortened into a sausage. Nice colors so far

Would probably look better with more contrast and some lighting to help show off the forms. These two Brad Rigney pieces have similar colors to what you are going for:

68 more minutes. Lower left corner is off and its maddening. Said 'fuck it' and have started half-tones.

I spent a lot less time on my last on and made some big measuring mistakes, so i spent forever measuring this time.
>literally trace it with your eyes.
not sure what you mean, but if it's glancing back and forth, i'm still developing that. Maybe you were gifted with better visual accuracy than me.

Go outside and draw some forest. You're rushing it, that's why it looks muddy. Also, you need darker darks.

>>2282998
Imo, rot would be indicated by sagging, tearing, holes and bugs.

Mouth looks like a sticker, exaggerate it less or the jaw more. His right leg shin should tilt in. Looks like its sliced at the knee and shifted to our left.

People keep critiquing this but I said I didn't post it to be critiqued, it was just as a message for someone.

This is quite nice, but there are a few things you should work on.

It looks very rigid and generic atm, almost like you used a pre-scripted tool. Try experimenting with unconventional writing styles and punctuating from the elbow.

You also haven't considered lighting and it looks very two dimensional. Remember to consider planes when working on consonants. Your "i"s in particular, leave a lot to be desired.

Keep at it.

Most of the brights work for me but the neck blue reads too saturated. I always enjoy seeing painters post on /ic/.
