Okay tier
>>2277671
There's a sense of poor construction here and there. It feels like you just guessed most of the contours and placed them where they felt appropriate. This results in wonky perspective and inconsistent proportions.
>>2277939
Looks like it's supposed to. Stylized cartoons.
>>2278136
Your animations have very unclear movements. I can see what they're supposed to be but there's always a little bump or a few unnecessary frames that break the flow.
I see potential tier
>>2277620
Very unclear forms and light sources. If you didn't focus so much on stylization you would be on the right track.
>>2277760
Very common problem. You are good at replicating, but there's a clear separation from referenced paintings to your drawings from imagination. Apply the knowledge learned from the studies to the personal drawings.
>>2277901
Pretty much the same as the previous guy. You're not applying the things learned from studies to your personal paintings. Speedpaints are very unclear smears and those gestures lack volume.
>>2277902
The really stylized drawings lack symmetry. If you thought about them in 3d space they wouldn't make any sense. Focus less on stylization and more on fixing those tendencies and bad habbits.
>>2277913
Your method of rendering is really scratchy. What I mean are those hairy lines that make the strokes. I'd suggest focusing on chunks of value first and following the form later.
>>2277961
The biggest thing I've tried to refrain from pointing out are your eyes. They feel like they're covered in cobweb. What I mean is that there's this layer of fog that makes them less saturated than they would really be. Also the same common problem, you are good at replicating but your personal drawings lack the lessons learned from those studies.
>>2277976
Really unclear forms. The only good ones are the vehicles but even they have really wonky perspective.
Still on the way to gitting gud.

>>2277625
Scratchy approach. Like you go for detail first and try to figure out form as you go.
>>2277626
You're still at the phase where you do literal copies of photographs.
>>2277708
You focus on stylization and contours.
>>2277732
It's clear that you are looking at other porn artists and see what appeals and are to replicate that style. But you lack the fundamental knowledge to know how to break them down in order to replicate them properly.
>>2277753
Again, stylization over construction. Flat forms and lifeless faces.
>>2277804

Thanks for the Crit! If you could elaborate I probably would apperciate the critizism even more as I would understand better. Right now I'm actually trying improve my understadning of values and such, so your advice might be helpfull. In pic related I have a pretty broad value range from 1 to 10 more or less. But maybe you were talking about the local value of objects or something, idk?
>>2278268
that's the problem, it doesn't have any merit. it's shitty random advices that literally do not make any sense sometimes, it just looks like he's forcing himself to have something to say to all the posts here, when he doesn't even understand why he's saying it.
I don't know man, if you're gonna say all of this, assume it, post your blog so others can see annd critique your work too.
>>2278284
Well there aren't any significant transitions from the highlights to the midtones. For example in the pic, look at the foreground and pick the lightest white and then the middle tones. They are really close in the value range. This makes them blend in together. Same goes with the dark values in the background.
>>2278291
Thanks, now I understand what you mean. And I can see how that applies to the picture in a certain respect, because it is inconsistenly lit, and some local values dont have the corresponding highlights. but some do. In addition some areas are overexposed etc.
Maybe you are right the there needs to be a more sudden transition from mid to highs especially for exposed skin and hair as they often are greasy, When it comes to matt objects its a little more subtle.
And for the background it might have been better to stick with more clearly separated values betewen train, rail and the wall. But that choice was consciously made to contrast with the figures in the foreground, maybe the wall can be lighter to creat more contrast in the background though.
Anyway, thank you for taking time to review my work! And I would happily be corrected if anything I said sounded wrong.

I know Fun with a Pencil is meant to teach construction, but I don't know how to learn effectively from it. What tags do you guys post in? I only ever really post in the mechanical design and character design tags. Is it true that only the first five tags are global?
>>2278328
congrats
>>2278331
>>2278331
>first five tags are global
Yup! That is correct. Overall, I typically think it's best to avoid niche, narrow hashtags. The gains from occasionally having a post go viral in a major hashtag tend to outweigh the gains from using low-traffic tags.
I typically do:
#GIF
#(predominant color in drawing - ie. Yellow or Red)
#(subject matter, if interesting)
#illustration
#(franchise name if pop-culture related)
#radarplz (some people say this helps get 'featured' in the sidebar. Never really been confirmed, hard to find info on this)
And a few others. I think it's important to diversify your hashtags with things that are totally non-art related. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
http://ronanlynam.tumblr.com
>>2278314
Yeah that's mainly it. You focused so much on separating the background from the foreground that you forgot to separate the individual parts within them. Like you said the wall and the train in the bg are barely any different if at all. And I'm assuming there's a pole or something on the left in the midground that blends with the background. For the foreground, look at the difference between skin and cloth, they are nearly identical. As a viewer you can see where the cloth starts and the skin ends, but only after you've looked for the line inbetween. And if you're going for subtlety, in this picture its too much.
>>2278355
Is it actually worth tagging you art like that? It feels kind of false to me to do that, but I may be limited how many people see my stuff. How much of a difference do tags make? Wouldn't they mostly attract non-art people? What's the point?
um. can someone post some fucking instagrams. i can't browse tumblr on my phone.
>>2278326
At this point you are drawing very symbolically. You are constructing, but only for the circle for the head and the cross hair. That's it. You need to be applying construction to every part of the body. You should for example start out with a box for the head instead of a circle, this helps getting the perspective right. Like in the picture related, I think this will help you out in finding the right proportions and symmetry. Then just break the rest of the head into simple shapes and go from there, imagine like you were carving something out of a block of wood or something. Like you were sculpting.
>>2278256
>http://desdraws.tumblr.com/
>Again, stylization over construction. Flat forms and lifeless faces.
>stylization over construction
to what degree do you consider this a fault? (keeping in mind that this can be said for literally anything that sways even a tiny bit from real life properties) Some elaboration would be helpful. I consider thinking of things constructively to be one of my better strengths.
>Flat forms
please elaborate
>lifeless faces
I agree, working on it.
>>2278367
It depends what you're trying to get out of social media.
All of this stuff is a complete waste of time unless you're shooting towards some sort of goal. For most practical goals, more followers/engagement = more benefits.
For example, getting mass amounts of fans online can increase your exposure so that you might catch the attention of someone who wants to hire your. Art directors occassionally hire folks they stumble upon online, and they won't find you if they can't see you. Also - more followers gives more credential to your work. If other people seem to enjoy it, AD's will think your work has more merit than someone with now following.
Another way more followers can be beneficial is through sales. Set up an online store and sell prints, shirts, etc. If your work is popular, you'll make more sales the more fans you have.
These are just some common ways more followers can be good for you.
>Wouldn't they mostly attract non-art people
Yes. Using non-art related tags will attract more of a general audience. There is nothing wrong with this. You don't have to be an artist yourself to enjoy other people's work.
>>2278381
>>stylization over construction
>to what degree do you consider this a fault?
When it becomes the focus of the artist to have it look appealing in terms of stylization, rather than accurate. In many of your drawings, it's obvious that you were more concerned about the inking and the literal "character" of the character, than you were of your technical ability. This leads into inaccuracies that break the appeal.
>>Flat forms
>please elaborate
Things don't feel like they're in 3d space. Some of your drawings do, but only if they're in a very specific 3/4 pose. A lot of them simply lack volume.
>>2278381
Not that anon, but there is a flatness to your work that comes across as not intentional. Stylization towards visual flatness is one thing, but flatness from the drawing not showing correct volumes in another.
>>2278219
Shaddy's brush pack with some brushes picked from Eytan Zana and John Sweeney's packs. Most of the pic was done with a round brush with a canvas-like texture, pretty easy to find in most painterly packs around.
>>2278249
>Very common problem. You are good at replicating, but there's a clear separation from referenced paintings to your drawings from imagination. Apply the knowledge learned from the studies to the personal drawings.
The pics I put on tumblr are either stylized stuff done for fun or studies. My professional work has very little to do with the stylized stuff (more photo-realistic stuff), that's where I apply the knowledge gained from studies.
>>2278398
Cheers for the response. I don't really know why I post online to be honest. I only post a fraction of the work I do. I guess I just don't want to be nonexistent online, though I don't really care for attention. Probably it would be good to post more and tag my stuff for the reasons you stated.
how do you guys grow popularity? I started weeks ago and got +250
at fb it doesn't seem as effective
>>2278408
Totally! No problem.
For those who aren't chasing a strong career in art, then it may seem pointless to be working social media so much.
Even for more hobbyist artists, it's nice to know that people like your work. There's nothing wrong with growing a fanbase solely for the ego boost. If it makes you happy, do more of it!
>>2278427
Haha I'm actually a struggling professional artist. I just get uncomfortable self promoting or getting attention.
>>2278426
Easiest is make fanart or some slice of life. People love shit they can relate to. If that's not your thing, it's also good to submit to some art blogs such as eatsleepdraw or theartofanimation.

Usually they have a submission page. Be sure to browse the blog first to get an idea what they are looking for. Some don't reblog your blog and prefer you upload on their site. So be thorough in the submission to include your site/blog/store/whatever other social media that you use. A small signature or blog name on the corner of pic is also helpful.

>>2278583
>hey man, you seem like you know what you are talking about
You're giving me too much credit but okay.
You have a very clear sense of initial construction in some drawings, and in others not at all. It's like you jump from decent to a total beginner in every few drawings. You're showing technical abilities inconsistently. For example, look how you draw the skull. In some drawings you have accurate symmetry, in others the facial features are completely slanted. And I get that some of that wonkyness might be intentional, but I don't see it working. Most of your drawings are either in a side or front view. Or if they aren't, they are displayed in a very off balanced way. This comes again to the symmetry issue, they don't feel like they're in the same perspective as the rest of the image or if split from the middle and showed in a front view, they wouldn't make sense symmetrically. What it all boils down to is that your drawings don't feel solid. The little inconsistencies break any stylization you are trying to convey.
>>2278592
Your posts won't appear under tags if your tumblr is new or something like that. I had to keep posting before my stuff showed up on searches.

I appreciate you bringing light to my inconsistency as I have been inconsistent with attending to fixing it.
I can become very neglecting when constructing some of the drawings, I get to caught up with the idea of the drawing and not so much the effective technical conveyance of it; im shooting myself in the foot without really knowing.
Ill be sure to spend more time doing proper construction.
thank you

Things are posed or placed very conveniently for the camera. Like you force yourself to show everything. Look at this drawing for example. You have thought about the extreme angle and foreshortening from her head to her waist, but then the hips and legs are drawn like they would be in a front view. Same goes for the arms. You didn't show them as cylinders going downwards in space, but rather as legs in front view and you just squished them a little to give a sense of depth. And in the picture you posted, nothing is wrapping around the forms properly. Look at the forearms and the cloth that covers them, its like you connected the edges and them drew a little curve to the ends to indicate them wrapping around it. But you didn't follow the form all the way through. I would suggest that at least in the sketch phase you draw the lines wrapping fully around it. Like you were to draw ellipses, think of them as rubber bands around the arm.

I don't really understand what your goal is, a lot of them are obviously copies of photographs. A lot of the rules you break are things I don't think you yet understand. For example this one, did you first construct the head in perspective to give the illusion of a wide angle lense, or did you copy a photograph with each individual contour line?
>>2280365
well i should have been more exact bout my wishes here
i did not mean to ask for critique about the procress and circumstances but rather bout the pieces themselfes
as i do not understand why it should be important in principle not to use a photograph as some sort of tool to facilitate the process
only fundamental goal is to create stuff which doesnt fit into natural aesthetics at some point
bout that piece, i used a mirror to get an idea bout the perspektive which i tried to distort and alienat to the point where it appears to be slightly uncanny

Why do you trip? Your art isn't really that noteworthy. Is it so that people can "track" your progress? But they'll be able to do that anyway by following your blog.

Mostly cartoon stuff really, like pic related, nothing too special and not updated as often as i'd like, however; Tumblr has finally got a messaging system now though, so i'm up for chatting about art and stuff.
>>2280951
>I do it because I don't like anonymity, but I like this board.
I'm not that other guy, but I don't get this. Anonymity is what makes this board this board. It's kind of the whole point.
>>2281043
I like the honesty of the anons, I think it's one of the only places where you can get good critique even if just 5% of these critiques are useful, but I personally don't like to post my opinion under a "disguise".
Actually I think this could be a better place without the anonymity that permits a lot of fags to shitpost, if people kept the honesty even without that "protection" we could build a more helpful board.
>>2281084
>I personally don't like to post my opinion under a "disguise"
I don't think of it as a disguise. I think of it as an equalizer. People are forced to look at your opinion for what it is and determine themselves if it has value. Otherwise they will either consciously or unconsciously let the name of the person saying sway how they view the comment. You used to see that on CA all the time, if Elwell posted something it would carry so much more importance just because of his name. And you get the reverse too where people will dismiss or ignore comments based on who says it, regardless of the content.
>Actually I think this could be a better place without the anonymity that permits a lot of fags to shitpost, if people kept the honesty even without that "protection" we could build a more helpful board.
People won't keep that same honesty without anonymity. No one wants to shit talk famous people, talk about personal issues or their career, talk about clients, be very blunt with critique etc etc if they will have their name attached. And while the shitposts can be annoying or be too high in number at times, they are also a part of the board culture and can sometimes provide a good laugh. Not all of /ic/ has to be super serious art talk and crits. There is room for casual conversations, running jokes, trolls etc.
>>2281084
What makes you think having a name will get you any more honesty than not having one?
If anything a significant group of people will develop a vendetta and selectively shitpost against you, especially if they get even the slightest whiff of an ego. At that point, as soon as they can distinguish you, the quality of what you're posting becomes entirely secondary to how they feel about you as a person. This as a regular feature in drawthreads where anons will immediately start drama if they spot somebody they recognize if they have a history of disliking that person.
Accountability to your own opinions is sensible, it holds you to what you say and people can consider whether to take you seriously based on what you post, but assuming you're going to get honesty from others is silly. It decreases the likelihood, if anything.
>>2281118
I'm only one of those people, and if a post that size intimidates you maybe you should go back to fucking middle school. Some people come to places like this to have a dialogue and some opinions don't need to be expressed in witty one liners.

>>2281108
I agree with all you said and sometimes I laugh at the shitposting too.
About the equalizer, makes sense and it's kinda good for general opinions, but most of the time you see clueless people giving critiques or shitposting like it was an actual critique and if the people receiving that comment don't spot and filter it, it can be harmful. So it kinda has two sides to it.
Anyway, I personally don't like to give my opinion anonymously, even more when you start getting accused of samefagging and such, but I appreciate the board and participating in it.
(I think we are derailing the thread)
>>2281112
>Accountability to your own opinions is sensible, it holds you to what you say and people can consider whether to take you seriously based on what you post, but assuming you're going to get honesty from others is silly. It decreases the likelihood, if anything.
I think you're right. I'm not naive.
But people will recognize my work anyway even posting without a trip, just like you can recognize Firez, or some anons that don't use a trip, just by their work.
>>2280915
Thanks anon, the grind is real
>>2281152
But in those cases you recognize only the posts with the art, and all the general comments you make are still anonymous, so they can't form hateful opinions towards you as easily.
Also people probably don't recognize artwork as well as you think. I've had people mistake me for multiple other anons here (at least four others off the top of my head) and get asked plenty for a site/blog when I post.

I don't really care for hateful opinions and I don't give reason for any. Anyway as I said I don't like giving my opinion anonymously, just that.
>>2281446
>I don't really care for hateful opinions and I don't give reason for any
You don't need to. Having a trip is enough imo. I've watched tehmeh get attacked for no reason other than it being him, I've seen firez attacked also for no real reason. Basically you are just putting a target on your back by having a trip. I've been here a few years and always posted anonymously and always will.
>Anyway as I said I don't like giving my opinion anonymously, just that.
Well, fair enough I guess. Just realize that by posting with a trip your interactions on the board will inherently be different than if you post anonymously.

Yeah, I see it too. Kyle was shitposted as fuck recently. Maybe I'll ditch it if the heat grows too much... But if it comes to that it'll probably be better to just leave the board, which I think is very harmful to it because as you said, it makes resourceful people go away.
We'll see how it goes...

You mentioned to someone that contours are bad?
But "Keys to Drawing" keeps telling me to do blind contours.
Should I not be reading this or just ignore those parts? I'm so confused because I hear all the time how great contours are.
>>2281713
Contours aren't bad, when you draw something with no volume in mind only using contours, that tends to be bad. There are people who do not need any construction or sketching before they can lay down the line work, but this is only achieved when you know where to place them in order to give the illusion of depth. That's why it tends to be bad just to go straight to contours is that it'll turn out flat. You'll have 2 straight parallel lines, and that's supposed to be an arm for example, instead you should think what are they supposed to be the contours of? Lets say you wanted to draw a leg in 3 point perspective looking down, you could try to guess the contours, or you could try to construct it accurately with the perspective. These are both legitimate approaches, the thing that matters is which gives you the wanted result. Do you prefer accuracy with constructing the figure, or is the so called Vilppu method more your thing where you go with the flow?

>>2283023
>https://instagram.com/ahlworthington/
awesome work!
>>2285251
Usually I do tight line art, then block in the colors for the different elements ex: leaves, legs, foreground trees, mid-ground and background trees, sky. Keeping all of these on separate layers beneath the lineart, I'll lock the pixels on each layer and add in more variation to the colors some texture, bit of lighting etc. Then once the gist of everything is there I'll make a layer over the line art and just start painting as you would normally. This covers up the lines and adds detail and stuff. Then i did the rain on a few layers and the droplets on a few layers as well.
