I did some more to my characters. I scrubbed one of them out. It would have worked as a piece of outsider art, but it'd be a push to take it seriously. I felt warmly to the characters, but they're too odd. What I'm trying to do doesn't quite work, the manner in which I'm painting it. But I'm sort of stuck with it, I'll have to stick with it till I have something passable.

Not sure what the solution is other than keep trying till I fluke it.

Eyes are a secondary feature. I can tell by the way you drew the far side of the face that you're still symbol drawing. Construct the skull first, it'll give your heads the correct shape, then add secondary features. Proper placement > features alone.

That hand is enormous, same w/ wrist. Scarf thing doesn't look 3 dimensional. There's no seams on the clothing. Thing on belt is unreadable. Wristwatch? Thing? is unreadable. Right foot is weird. Strap is tilted way too far. Mouth to jawline is bizarre.
You should develop your colors more, that's a major reason why it feels so plain, almost everything is the same color, with the same fabric textures.

But seriously. When designing a character, give him things that symbolize parts of his personality. Since he's a Blue Mage, the was a good call. Because he's also a courier, I'd stick a bigger bag on him to reinforce that aspect of him because his current bag is small and won't allow him to carry lots of stuff for more efficient delivery runs. As far as his clothing goes, it does fit him somewhat I guess. The fact that it's triggering the anons here means that he's a normie and thus somewhat fits the easy-going bit of him.

If I had to change one thing I'd throw a blue hoodie on him. As it is he looks okay, but with the hoodie he'd look a bit more casual. Just my two cents.

If you're having trouble with poses, what I like to do is mold my kneading rubber into a human shape and pose it like my figure. You could do the same with silly putty or the equivalent if you don't want to invest in a proper mannequin.

Thanks. I agree, at first I tried to make her look like she was sitting relaxed but then I wanted to highlight her right foot and hips a bit more so it ended up being quite strange. The same applies to her hands. I guess you noticed they are very tense.

The light source isn't very clear as the shadows on some of the ghosts seem to be misplaced, like the bottom ghost as the shadows in the rest of your piece seem to suggest that the light source is coming g from behind the viewer, in which case the shadows are too high up. If the light source is from the upper right of the piece, then likewise the shadows on the ghosts on the upper right are on the wrong side.

That's exactly my point. The gameplay is focused on telling a narrative and super bare bones. It's shallow even for what it is. It throws gimmicks at you to try and make up for what it lacks.

Like what that anon said. I think the big thing is just that your stuff might be a bit flat. Try adding some volume to your pictures, I think it'll really bring them to life more. Maybe experiment with more dynamic perspective too.

this one. It blends stuff very nicely. I made a variation that adds slight hue and saturation changes.

The main drawback is that it's very "weak", so I like to block in the shapes with a polygon tool/stronger brush first and then use this brush to blend it out and add variations

might also want to try krita. I do almost 100% of my digital painting in it these days, but I keep mypaint around for that one brush. Krita can open and save mypaints .ora files, so all your layers and stuff carry over.

also, the brushes to the right of that one (the one with the red and the swamp) are pretty neat for making softer edges or smudging out edges a bit if the watercolor brush creates too many artefacts/hard edges, which it tends to do at low pressures

So I very rarely venture beyond muh studies and trying to realistically depict something, but I was fucking around a bit and took things in a different direction.
I actually like it, but since I never really do anything stylistic, and I've had a couple of beers (not wasted but you know), I kind of want to know... does it look like garbage to anyone who isn't me?

I know it's rough around the edges, but I might try and refine a little if it turns out I'm not 100% delusional. I'm just always horrified of getting stuck in a 'muh style' trap where I think it looks cool but it actually looks terrible and I end up in cringe threads.

That's basically what it is. I'm messing with different brushes that I've never used before.
I'm certainly willing to refine it more, if it seems like it needs it. The thing was that a lot of stuff I do normally I have harder edges but the end result looks very average and mediocre, so I wanted to experiment with different brudges.

Your proportions are completely fuccked anon. The upper arms are far too short, the elbow is at the waist not the middle of the ribcage. also practice hands, i know the character only has 3 fingers but you aren't capturing how fingers bend right. also look again at the positioning of the head on the shoulders, its like floating off to the left. legs also look extremely awkward. you can keep the face and head but i'd say the body is a complete do over, think more about your gesture next time also.
