I also use GIMP. For shadows, I create a new layer, move it on top, set it's opacity to 20%, set the brush to black and make it a bigger size. Then i do the same for hilights but with opacity set to 100% and with a white brush. Also the Airbrush could be a better option if use the mouse.

Op here and anon, im not even sure my self i was kinda planning on making sort of a comic even though my art is pretty shity with the main plot of it being Nicole and Blondie (im still not sure on the name) but then more another character, and then another. You can improve your art without a tablet.
Just get some paper and a pencil or pen and start drawing everyday. You can then invest in a scanner and scan your work to your computer. Then invest in a cheaper tablet like Monoprice and work off that for a while doing line work and coloring and then invest in a Wacom.

You can skip the scanner part though, some people like drawing on paper and finishing digitally.

No scanner? Just use a plain camera and Gimp. Capture you lineart from paper, open in Gimp and turn on the grid. Adjust your drawing by skewed pinch tool. It would be a good idea to draw a crosshatch at each corner of your paper beforehand so you can align your drawing digitally without screwed forshortening. Then. Turn off the grid, adjust the contrast and you are prepared for mouse click coloring. I hope this help.
