It is not mandatory at all, many of my favorite artists are self taught. All the necessary art lessons and references are available online or in books. Like the previous person said, art school is mainly helpful for artists hoping to pursue industry art and animation. Artists I have known who actually enjoyed school were because of all the inspiration and talented people surrounding them.

It depends.... don't just go in to an art school just because you want to, If you are a beginner at drawing, try to self study first...then If you're really confident at drawing, go to an art school

Art school will not help you get better if YOU aren't putting the effort in, and it WILL NOT magically get you a job.
