Yo, I made this at uni

its 18 hig res metallographic images stitched together showing the case hardening of af iron specimen.

What do you think?

I don't know what that is, but it's cool.
>>
>>2877788
nigga wut?
>>
>>2877788
looks great.
Need to retouch the top and bottom though, the stitching outside the iron bar is clearly visible, bar itself is fine.
>>
>>2877788
bitchin!

Got any more stuff like this?

I diffused carbon (from carbon monoxide gas) into an iron specimen at 1000c for ~2 hours, the carbon distribution is a gradient from high concentriation near the edge, to low concentration in the center. The carbon changes the microstucture of the iron resulting in the different colors apearing. Theres a bunch of other interesting metallographic stuff going on like pearlitic structure (if I magnify it 500x instead of 50x I would see very fine lamel structure in the darker grains, that is the picture attached to this post), dendrites (the grains which shows a clear directionality) and some precipitates i have yet to identify

>>2877829
I knwo that parts of the plastic mold i still visible, but it is bad metallographic practice to unnecessarily cut out information

>>2877922
This is the only stitched image I have made yet, I have a bunch of images in ~2000x1600px showing different features from this specimen and many others.
>>
>>2877788
i can only say: i clearly felt my case hardening
just by looking at this
>>
>>2878101
Please dont bring your crassnes into my research :(
>>
>>2877788
I like the metalurgy stuff, anon. Keep it alive
>>
What's the point of this?
Serious question or is it just an aesthetic thing?
>>
>>2878132
thx, I appreciate your comment :)

>>2878139
Its part of my research, but to be honest, making an image this large is mostly an aesthetic choice as all the relevant information could be gathered from a few select images.
If you are curious about the mechanics of this process you should read up on diffusion in metals. I can recommend mcallister: Materials science and Engineering as a point of entry. I think The diffusion part is in chapter 7.

Hi everyone, today I made another image. This time it was carbonized for much longer (~6 hours) changing the crystal structure throughout the specimen
>>
>>2878322
btw, making these images takes me 1-2 hours of fidgeting with the microscope to make, so I really hope you guys enjoy them as much as I do :)
>>
>>2878324
Enjoy? I'm gonna have this as wallpaper for the rest of the month
>>

Shit the bed, That's crazy. Doing photography at uni in September. Got to try this. Keep it up :)

Are you majoring in materials or something? Im doing electrical engineering but i had to take a materials course as a requirement.
>>
>>2878392
i might have exaggerated a bit, it takes 1-2 hours to prepare and photograph a sample like this, but much of that work would have to be done even if im not doing a huge image like these :)

>>2878737
Im actually in design. I took a practical metallurgy course and loved the lab work, so I decided to do my finals project in metallurgy
>>
>>2878807
Love it though. Really interesting images :)

I clabbed a doofus until somewhere gunneled, then prakked slipmour at 250 millibars. The rasbutter then schtupped the professor until unrepentant. Class dismissed.

forging by electrical current being used as the heat source will always make stronger (more symmetrically grained) material

Neat stuff to see it up close though. GJ OP

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
