Reminds me of that scene in the Italian Job. The original not the remake.

Wait, what? Is this happening?
>>2807513
Maybe. Resolution is too shit to be sure.
>>2807513
Pretty sure it's a sculpture.
Took this on an engineering trip

I live there! they are ruining the bridge's ascetics as we speak by raising the bridge deck. :(
>>2832755
Yes they are raising the roadway so larger container ships can pass underneath. Its going to look weird.
>>2804292
That's a pretty cool bridge.
>>2804292
>>2814557
what bridge is this?
>>2804299
I'll never understand why Golden Gate is so famous. It's not that great.
>>2840969
>why Golden Gate is so famous.
It was built in the 1930s and was the longest suspension bridge for a long time. Like the Brooklyn bridge it was cutting edge engineering at the time.
>>2840969
Nigga what? It's massive, even by today's standards. Have you actually been there and seen it up close? Even in that photo you can see the scope of it's span, the height of it's towers. The main cables are like 4 feet thick. The main span is like 4500 feet. That's 4500 feet of suspended road with no obstruction in the water below it.
>>2842401
meh

>posts a bridge with a shorter main span
>meh
???
>>2843930
Also
>400 feet shorter span
>200 feet shorter towers
>>2843930
>>2843931
I'm biased. Fuck me. I honestly didn't realize how much taller the towers of the Golden Gate (and by extension the span) were. Impressive.
The Mac is a surreal drive. Lovely on a calm summer day, surreal in the winter, and spooky at night.

I just realized something. I'll tell you what threw you off. The Mackinac bridge is a 4 lane road but the Golden Gate is 8, so when you see pictures from far away they look on par but then you realize the Golden Gate's road deck is twice the width so it's all around bigger than you thought. Do you cross the Mackinac often?

It's hard to beat the Roebling bridge in Cincinnati on the topic of engineering/architectural foresight. The bridge is so old that photographs of it being built don't exist because it was built before photography was invented, and yet it carries cars today.

Forgot pic like an idiot lol
>>2847323
Eh I take that back about photography. Should have done my research before typing that.

The Forth Bridge, Scotland.
Tay Bridge, between Dundee and Fife, Scotland.
In 1878 it was the longest in the world. Ulysses S. Grant visited and commented that it was "a big bridge for a small city".

That bridge was already was shit because it's in Jersey.

Out of interest does anyone know what purpose the middle arch serves?

Bridges down here in the American South.
The Ponchartrain causeway is almost 24 miles in length. It is the longest continuous bridge in the world. The shoulders are pretty much nonexistent and fatal crashes are a common occurence.
>>2864438
This Landsat image gives a good idea of the length. The line dividing Lake Pontchartrain is the Causeway. The urban areas on the south end is New Orleans and its surrounding suburbs.
