more northern europe/scandinavian style castles please
So are some of these castles privately owned and people live in them or are they all just government owned landmarks that have been turned into tourist attractions?
>>2609375
Most of them are privately owned, specially the "small" ones. They are opened to public, some are B&B. A wing of the castle is normally closed to visitors as it serves as homes of the owners. The big ones, like Chambord Chenonceau and Amboise are owned by the county or national government. Obviously, a wing here and there or few room are closed due to safety rules or repair works. Chenonceau for example is fully accessible as far as i know.
bump, because motherfucking castles.

Not sure if this counts,
It's Stadium High School, Tacoma, WA, USA.
Back in the early late 1890s, this building was made to be a hotel, but there were several fires and setbacks, so the local school district bought it and converted it into a high school.
It's commonly referred to as a castle when talking about the building

Few castles, lots of palaces, mansions and stuff. I blame Disney for that.
Muslim castle of my hometown in Spain, 9th century.
>>2649452
You do realize that most of those palaces predate Disney by 200-300 years, right?
>>2650310
People posting is not predate by 200-300 years anon, i think he's blaming Disney for making ppl think those "palaces" are castles.
I couldn't care less, tho.
>>2650377
Americans know little of castles as we have none of our own. Our knowledge of castles comes from movies (like Disney films) or BBC documentaries. Closest I've ever come to seeing a castle was Fort Knox. Not quite the same.

In my non-expert opinion, only these actually look like real castles with military-fortress purposes.
Not Neuschwanstein, the Disney's logo and the most possible reason why lots of people call "castle" at almost every big building with that kind of look.
Even there's is not an accurate definition yet about what's exactly a castle and what is not, one thing for sure is there's must be some military stuff on it, i believe.
Anyway, i love /hr/ pics of castles, and palaces and masions too, much much more than celebfags threads. Keep it going!
During middle ages any fortified building was called castle. Regardless if it was some wooden fort or a walled city. This was the castle of the first German king. And like a thousand years ago it's mostly a fortified church.
>>2650438
Neuschwanstein is actually just a schloss = chateau, not burg = castle; it's meant to look epic without really having purpose
>>2650438
In my expert opinion, there is no need to quote bomb.

definition of château from wiki:
A château (plural châteaux) is a manor house or residence of the lord of the manor or a country house of nobility or gentry, with or without fortifications, originally—and still most frequently—in French-speaking regions.
The word château is also used for castles in French, so where clarification is needed, the term château fort is used to describe a castle, such as Château fort de Roquetaillade. Care should be taken when translating the word château into English. It is not used in the same way as "castle", and most châteaux are described in English as "palaces" or "country houses" rather than "castles". For example, the Château de Versailles is so called because it was located in the countryside when it was built, but it does not bear any resemblance to a castle, so it is usually known in English as the Palace of Versailles.
The urban counterpart of château is palais, which in French is applied only to grand houses in a city. This usage is again different from that of the term "palace" in English, where there is no requirement that a palace must be in a city, but the word is rarely used for buildings other than the grandest royal residences. The expression hôtel particulier is used for an urban "private house" of a grand sort.
the translation chateau/castle is the reason why it is confusing. As i'm a frogfag, i posted 'mansions ' and 'palaces' (as you would define them) under the word castles because in france they are also called 'chateaux' which i wrongly translated as 'castles'. Hope this is clarified.
btw i salute each of you who have been contributing to this thread. Many thanks for all of you anons

Looks reasonably small and efficient.
Sometimes I imagine some kind of new Great Depression happening (which it eventually will) and while everyone chimps out like they did in Argentina, I'm in a small efficient castle with high walls, guns, ammunition, dogs, food, water, firewood, and some gold and silver when (if) the dust settles and there's a new monetary system in place.

That's Alicante right? I'm from Canada but I spent a winter there about fifteen years ago. I have fond memories of that place, out of all the towns and cities I've been too that is one of the one's I'd like to visit again the most.

Usually they're privately owned and funded. The owners often have to make it a business somehow to keep the place going because of massive upkeep and taxes and shit. One castle I saw on Great British Castles (Netflix) couldn't be maintained by the family it was given to hundreds of years before, so it was sold to some company and is now a family oriented medieval themed Chuck E. Cheese's basically.
The owners of Highclere made money by letting Downton Abbey be filmed there.
