Anyone else tempted in joining a monastery?

>that comfy life of discipline
>living a non-materialistic lifestyle
>living in a community where you all share the workload
>>
>>973419
Dude, no Internet. I've thought of it, but no internet. Monasteries are a lot more regulated now they can be overseen easily, than they used to, in the good old days of wine fueled Nun Orgies.
>>
>>973419
Yeah. If I had a gorillion dollars I'd even start a monastery.
>>
ive thought of it too but do a little research into it, cause that vision is too naive and idealized.

collective monastic life is a harsh thing, only a different harshness.
>>
>>973419
Fuck no. No internet and I have to wake up at the crack of dawn or some other godforsaken hour? Fuck that.
Also those guys work as hard as any wageslave for no reward whatsoever because muh materialism.
Not to mention that it would mean living only with men without ever seeing women. I need women, not just for my dick, but for my brain too.
>>
I'd rather live in the shire.
>>
>>973843
I agree it's not just sitting around and being enlightened there are many downsides but I wouldn't mind doing it for a year or so, would be nice
>>
>>973419
I've thought of it a few times. I'm Orthodox and monasticism is particularly strong in Orthodox church so luckily there are some really good communities out there for me to join. For now i love the life too much to consider it but i will most likely commit in my old days after i'm done with pursuing material things.
>>
>>976806
You are never going to do this.

>comfy life of discipline

Can you handle confrontational epistemology debates? Being alone with your own mind for hours at a time?
>>
>>973419
Like any alterantive minimialist lifeystyle it has its appeals but is ulitmatley too restrictive and unable to deal with the changing needs and desires I have as a person. I might enjoy that lifestyle for 20 years but once that stops ill effectivly be trapped theres having no transferable skills.
>>
>wanting to be a filthy commie

Christ cucks are disgusting
>>
>>973776
>No internet
that's the best aspect of a monastery.
>>
>>973419
>>that comfy life of discipline

>>living in a community where you all share the workload

kek. That shit isnt shared. The new guys do all that.
>>
Fuck no. Material goods are the only things that are keeping me from killing myself.

No games, no Internet, no alcohol, no cute anime girls, no drugs and no prostitutes.

I would die of depression within a week.
>>
>>973419
>no tits
>no 4chan

These are the two things worth living for
>>
>>978174
>>978162
look at these hedonists
>>
I wish there was a way to experience it without full commitment. I know that's kind of the point but something like those programs that set you up for working a semester or two in a farm in Australia. I feel I could use the experience
>>
>>973419
>Anyone else tempted in joining a monastery?
I was until I realised the only reason I wanted to do it was because I wanted to kill myself but was too cowardly to actually do it so I figured retiring from the world would be the next best thing.

Now the only reason I would join monastery is so I would have a place to do my art/music in peace without needing to have a job
>>
>>974109
This
>>
>>978184
>I wish there was a way to experience it without full commitment.
There is. It's not uncommon for the laxer buddhist temples to offer "trial periods" that are actually just vacation packages for spiritually starved western tourists.
Just, be fucking careful. I've heard horror stories about the temples sequestering your documents and holding them ransom for money to let you go.
>>
>>978162
It's the other way around senpai
>>
>>978195
I don't come from a first world country, I also don't get how people fall for this crap. When you see the followers of those bullshit gurus it's never a Czech or a Mexican, always some American, German or British shitforbrains

I thought about it a few times before. It's the perfect getaway to disinfect oneself of "life" the same way you would go on a strict diet to get rid of the poison ingested throughout the years. I have a cousin that went away for as a Mormon missionary trip for two years and he came back a completely changed man for good. I can only imagine an Orthodox one which is the one I'm interested the most.

>>973776
>>978162
Don't worry laddies some Christian monastic life has adapted to modern society by offering computer services so you can shitpost to your hearts content.
>>
>>978211
>I also don't get how people fall for this crap.
Because you're too poor to have had the sheltered life of these shitsforbrains. I know a couple very rich people, you'd be surprised how detatched from reality they are. Going to boarding school completely ruined them, it's like they're uncapable of processing experiences outside academic pursuits and synthetic drugs.
>>
>>978211
>When you see the followers of those bullshit gurus it's never a Czech or a Mexican
I'm with you on the germans, they're the most credulous people on the planet, but Polish people definitely swallow this shit up so I'd imagine czechs do too.
>>
One of the most important quality needed, to maintain discipline and others, is obedience towards your spiritual elder.
Think about that. It's hard.
>>
If I had infinite money, I'd love to found a pseudo-monastery or commune dedicated to spreading knowledge and access to that knowledge to anyone that needs it.

Do shit like go into some backwards as fuck country and teach them how to build the stuff they need to not die/flourish. And establish internet connections in these places so people can look this stuff up if they need to/want to- and collate a central database of essential, basic things- irrigation, plumbing, maybe electricity, masonry, etc etc.

But I don't have infinite money. Alas.
>>
>>978191
That's really the only decent reason to do it
>>
>>977576
>Being alone with your own mind for hours at a time?
Where do you think we are?
>>
Hell nah brah

Fuck that pussy ass gay shit.

Why would I do that when I can post on 4chan, watch hella fucking hot porn, and do the hella fuck I like?

Fuck all you pussies
>>
>>978191
Pretty sure that's the only reason does it, in modern times anyway.

>>978486
I call bullshit. It doesn't take infinite money to establish a commune of any sort. All it requires is a clear vision, a lot of determination, and several other like minded people. You would live like shit for a few years probably, and in that time, send most of everyday toiling to build your little monastery, but hard work aside, it's pretty easy to do.
>>
>>979105

Why do hedonists think that everyone want to be a hedonist, and the reason some people aren't is only because they're too weak or afraid to?

Perhaps hedonists cannot admit that some people are better or wiser than them.
>>
>>979126

It takes large sums of money to ensure the safety of that commune, to educate those living therein, to assist in funding minor and major goodwill projects, etc, etc, especially given that its purpose isn't to hide away behind walls, but rather instead to go out among the people and do good. Pretty much everything costs money, and time, and work to accomplish, and you'd need to be pretty economically stable and otherwise safe to attract highly or reasonably-educated secular folks to a life where they'd be risking themselves for no personal profit whatsoever.

Once it'd all be set in motion, it'd be a different story, but the initial investment would inevitably be costly.
>>
>>979382

To better illustrate it, it'd almost be more like a university than a monastery on the interior, save for that all the professors work for free and teach stuff like 'how to build shit that won't fall down again'. And on the exterior, it'd be more like a voluntary consultation-meets-labor crew. Dunno if that helps explain it any better.
>>
>>973419
I do sometimes, but being Atheist would any monastery accept me?
>>
If Engineering fails I might actually convert to Catholicism or Orthodoxy and just go and become a monk somewhere desu. Make my own wine, live in the mountains. Shame about the lack of Internet though.
>>
>>981259
Good luck anon. That's a noble endeavour, but don't let all of your hard work go to waste just yet.
>>
>>973419
Yeah I'm addicted to computer so that wouldn't work out very well

Monasticism is spiritual hedonism. The proper Christian life is spent out in the world spreading goodness.

Umm no. Discipline is the opposite of comfy.
>living a non-materialistic lifestyle
You don't need to join a monastery for that.
>living in a community where you all share the workload
It's just like any other group, only seniority matters. Older memebers make the new ones do all the work.

Might be sweet if you end up at the top but getting there sucks. Might as well go join a frat.
>>
>>973419
Is this an attemp to make MGTOW thread on /his/?
>>
I want more than anything to do this for like one year in the middle of China or something where nobody spoke the same language as me and I just followed along with all the stuff they did and live as they live regardless, but only for one year
>>
>>973419
Just join a rugged commune. It seems like you're attracted more to the lifestyle than the spiritual aspect, which is of course the exact wrong reason to consider it.
>>
I worked at an Abbey for a month helping with a play a Catholic school was putting on there. I'ld end up eating lunch with some of the brothers sometimes, place was 10/10 comfy.
