It's pretty common in history for there to be at least 3-5 days of just chaotic looting, killing, and raping whenever a major city is taken by a conquering army. More Machiavellian thinkers would argue that this is natural and should be utilized for the sake of troop morale. A sort of prize for the soldiers for winning the battle in the form of looting.
