The entire country was deindustrialized. Growth rate was stagnant at .07% a year and extreme poverty was at +75%. It was complete and utter shit, much worse than today.
After independence growth grew to a paltry, but improved, 1.7% for the next decades until spiking to +7% after capitalist reforms in the 90s. Mass famine and starvation was kept in check relative compared to past era. General standard of living and literacy improved greatly.
