No. The Ottoman conquest of Constantinople is overrated. It was of immense macro-historical importance, but the conquest itself was not impressive, nor was it avoidable.

See pic related, those numbers are the size of the Byzantine army throughout the centuries. Just look at those numbers dwindling after the Fourth Crusade.

Compare that to the Arab siege in 717-718, the Byzantine Army was still quite big back then. Had the Arabs conquered Constantinople back then it would have been a massive victory, and it would have changed the course of history.

Yes, the Christians were the biggest threat to their fellow Christians. The Byzantines got smoked in their first encounters with Arabs but after that they started to really do well and even fight (and conquer) back (Macedonian dynasty I believe). However, protecting your rear and your front? They couldn't do it, and we all know what happened.

Funnily enough, the exact same thing has been happening with Islam for a while now. The biggest enemies of pretty much every Islamic state is a fellow Islamic state. And they say history doesn't repeat itself.

Yes, it actually was though. I'm not taking shine away from the Ottomans because they kept at it until they captured the city, but the Byzantines in the 8th century were still strong, whereas the Byzantines in the 15th century were weak.

The Byzantines didn't even have enough men to man all the walls. The first walls were abandoned entirely. The third were in such disrepair that they were useless and left unmanned.


To defend the second set of walls, thay had a TOTAL of 7,000 men. This includes soldiers, mercenaries, militia, monks, and peasants with sticks and rocks.

One the sips got into their rear and forced them to spread to cover the sea walls, they had lost. They could have given their cannons and crews to the greeks and still would have won.

Top kek, if they had helped and won the ottos would have just come back a year later and won. If they had kept helping, they'd just have been in a state of constant war with the ottos, which no eastern power could have managed, and would soon have resulted in the conquest of the city and the ottos once again pushing west. Byzantium couldn't stand on its own, so no point keeping propping it up.
