The American Churchill.

A charismatic, determined leader that did well in a time of crisis.

Kind of shit otherwise.

He's no Andrew Jackson, though.

Andrew Jackson may have been a godawful human being but there is just no denying he was a Teddy-tier badass.

>Decorated soldier
>Attacked and took territory with the excuse being "I thought the war was over"
>Used the fame off of bold-ass war action to get elected President.
>Proceeds to shatter the elitism of the time and expand the vote to even non-landowners.

And my favorite: Once there was an assassination attempt on Andrew Jackson. The guy pulls out two pistols. BOTH of them misfire and Andrew Jackson takes his cane (the reason for his nickname old Hickory) and starts to BEAT the guy. He has to be pulled off his own god damn assassin.

Republican logic, everyone.

The US supported an openly fundamentalist Islamic group over a secular state. The Democratic Republic of Afghanistan heavily reformed the education and infrastructure of Afghanistan, leading to higher literacy rates for both sexes and almost Western-standards of life in cities. Religion was respected and multiple political parties existed. Tribal squabbles will undone and Afghan unity was stressed. Afghanistan was modernizing.

But because of muh commies, the US gave weapons and finances to literal Islamic terrorists whom, once again, were open about their future plans for Afghanistan. Knowing full well about the Wahhabism espoused by the Mujahideen, the US chose to give terrorists advanced weaponry and encouraged an overthrow of the current Afghan republic. Alas, look at what the US has done to a state that was on the right path.

They were destroyed in order to lower the capital of a region and thus make occupation harder. When everything the enemy destroys can be rebuilt easily you've essentially won the logic of resistance.

That comic owns. This is the other one I think every Reagan thread needs.

>I spent the eight years he was in office living in one of those science-fiction movies where everyone is taken over by aliens—I was appalled by how stupid and mean-spirited and repulsive the world was becoming while everyone else in America seemed to agree that things were finally exactly as they should be. The Washington Press corps was so enamored of his down-to-earth charm that they never checked his facts, but if you watched his face when it was at rest, when he wasn’t performing for anyone, you could see him for what he really was—a black-eyed, slit-mouthed, lizard-faced old son-of-a-bitch.
>>
>>907428
>He was a bad actor, an informer for McCarthy, and a hired front man for a gang of Texas oilmen, fundamentalist dingbats, and right-wing psychotics out of Dr. Strangelove. He put a genial face on chauvanism, callousness, and greed, and made people feel good about being bigots again. He likened Central American death squads to our founding fathers and called the Taliban “freedom fighters.” His legacy includes the dismantling of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal, the final dirty win of Management over Labor, the outsourcing of America’s manufacturing base, the embezzlement of almost all the country's wealth by 1% of its citizens, the scapegoating of the poor and black, the War on Drugs, the eviction of schizophrenics into the streets, AIDS, acid rain, Iran-Contra, and, let’s not forget, the corpses of two hundred forty United States Marines. He moved the center of political discourse in this country to somewhere in between Richard Nixon and Augusto Pinochet. He believed in astrology and Armageddon and didn't know the difference between history and movies; his stories were lies and his jokes were scripted. He was the triumph of image over truth, paving the way for even more vapid spokesmodels like George W. Bush. He was, as everyone agrees, exactly what he appeared to be—nothing. He made me ashamed to be an American. If there was any justice in this world his Presidential Library would contain nothing but boys' adventure books and bad cowboy movies, and the only things named after him would be shopping malls and Potter's Fields. Let the earth where he is buried be seeded with salt.

What made Eisenhower so great?
>>
>>907809
>He did, after all, end the Korean War without getting into any others. He stabilized, and did not escalate, the Soviet-American rivalry. He strengthened European alliances while withdrawing support from European colonialism. He rescued the Republican Party from isolationism and McCarthyism. He maintained prosperity, balanced the budget, promoted technological innovation, facilitated (if reluctantly) the civil rights movement and warned, in the most memorable farewell address since Washington's, of a "military–industrial complex" that could endanger the nation's liberties. Not until Reagan would another president leave office with so strong a sense of having accomplished what he set out to do.

No, to support the old government.

The right wing fundamentalists took over most of the countryside but failed to consolidate their hold, so the Afghan government invited the Soviets in to put down the rebellion.
>>
>>908390
Ah, so it was kind of a proxy war as well?

USA with rebels vs USSR with then socialist afghan nation?

how the fuck does the USSR AND afghan military lose to rebels?
>>
>>908404
Basically the exact same way that America lost to Vietnam.

Also, really key to the Taliban victory was the backing of Pakistan. The American arms and money flowed through Pakistan. This is why the religious extremist element became more pronounced over time, and moreso then the Americans were happy with. The money and arms would flow into Pakistan, get handed over to their intelligence people, who would then distribute them to who they wanted in the resistance.

They also provided shelter and training grounds for rebels, which the Soviets also couldn't touch.
