The Norse, Swede and Dane where farmers, fishers, herders and traders. They went Viking when the crops failed or populaton pressure got too much.

Vikings weren't conquerors though, but raiders, so I don't see why you need to know what they conquered for them to be based. Focus on the truly great things they achieved, like discovering North America 500 years before Columbus, or how they were the Byzantine Emperors bodyguards
