ITT the stupidest shit you've heard in a History or Humanities class, can be from either student or teacher

I'll start with a double whammy:

>Dadaism was directly responsible for the rise of Hitler

>A heterosexual and cissexual man or woman who does not conform to gender stereotypes can be classed as "LGBTQ" or "Queer" under queer theory, even though they're straight/cis, i.e. a guy who isn't into sports is "queer" and so is a woman who doesn't wear makeup
>>
>>390308
>Dadaism was directly responsible for the rise of Hitler
Did that person ever elaborate?
>>
>>390322

i've heard a similar theory, that he got rejected from art school due to not being in on the dadaism bandwagon, sparking the path of his career as a dissident turned politician turned dictator, meaning dadaism is implicated in nazi germany

Fucking hell, I'm a goddamn queer
>>
>>390405
why would you be proud of that
>>
>>390374
Because western colonial slaves were treated harsher in general than african and islamic-world slaves. This is pretty well documented.

I've lived in Missouri my whole life. Throughout grade school I've been taught at least 5 separate stances on Missouri's role in the civil war

Depends on how narrowly the topic guidelines are in line with the assigned books or articles. I've taken history classes where the assignment was mostly dependent on a novel or a memoir we were reading so there was little need to do outside research.

Have you ever fucking read a Marxist historian? The patrician idealism embodied in Plato and Aristotle's works are in no way connected with the proletariat's abolition of the state and capital with armed self-defence.

… you really wasted your degree didn't you?
>>
>>390862
The format of the readings for the class is that we would have a number of very objective accounts of the events being studied (it was sort of a survey of 20th century Slavic Europe), and then a number of more philosophical/opinion-oriented papers that only represented a small range of mostly overlapping narratives and opinions on events of that era. The issue is that it was never really recognized that we were looking at only one very academic, very far left and in some cases somewhat uncommon viewpoint of the history of that time.

We also had to very loudly espouse the viewpoints of the teachers in our papers. I got a slap on the wrist for saying something like "In terms of the letter of the law, male and female workers in Yugoslavia had equal rights," and not adding right afterward a disclaimer that women were discriminated against anyway (even though that was literally the thesis of my paper).
>>
>>390919

Yeah, it isn't like Chris Hill or EP Thompson revolutionised social history. It isn't like the other valid option is the Annales. It isn't like EH Carr wrote "What is History?"

Nah… you would have "wasted" your degree by reading the seminal texts that informed all contemporary methodology and which would have allowed you to distinguish Perry Anderson's schematisicm from Hayden White's idealist bullcrap. What a waste that would have been.

>may not be anywhere close to Marxist but he's closer than
Re-read this until you become aware of the contradiction of approaching an unapproachable limit.

Pre colonial slavery came in several strata. House/estate slaves had it a way less shitty than field slaves, who were better off than the ones in mines and quarries.
Some Hellenic slaves and later Islamic slaves in Egypt and under the Ottomans were much better off than the majority of their country.
Sicinnus is a perfect example.

Colonial slavery was comparatively homogeneous in its shittiness and they were never allowed to rise to high positions as pre-colonial slave, like commanding armies and the like.

Some idiot got mad when the professor said light objects fall as fast as heavy ones, and kept trying to explain how wrong that was, and he ran up to the board and started writing equations (don't remember because I'm not actually sure what they meant) and started rambling about hoe Aristotle's In the Heavens was void and stars burning because of the air proved he was right or something, and everyone laughed at him and the professor told him to shut the fuck up. The kind of slavery most people think of when they hear the word is chattel slavery where humans were treated pretty much like cattle and other beasts of labor. 2 weeks ago, I literally had a 5 minute conversation with a food truck worker over how annoying some Baptist waving a sign and speaking into a bullhorn preaching how Evolution was a lie, Obama is a Muslim, and the world is going to hell soon, was being. The same group did that a month earlier. Occasionally a group called Jews for Jesus would pass out bibles and pamphlets to students on the way to class (not aggressively though) and I've been approached by a few Baptist missionaries as well. The only time I've ever seen an atheist forcing his opinion on someone was some of them conversing with the loud-mouthed Baptist, and a booth set up at the university club fair that required you to go up and imitate conversation.

Eh, where I live, it's a pretty even mix. Most people don't give a shit either way, but the tiny percentages of euphoric fedoras and foaming-at-the-mouth Christian diehards manage to irritate each other in pretty entertaining ways. Sadly, my aunt is one of the Christians, and is convinced that all Catholics will go to hell for idol worship (great opinion to share with the elderly Catholics in our family over Christmas, really brings peace and understanding) along with everyone who is not a Baptist. Babies are sometimes included, depending on how many fedoras have been smug at her.

There was some modern art critic who looked at his paintings without being told it was by Hitler, and he said they were good but the lack of people, and the way he painted them gave him a vibe that the artist wasn't very interested in people.

Reminder that Hitler could have gone to that art school to become an architect but he was too much of a pussy to go back to secondary school

>In his first examination, he had passed the preliminary portion; which was to draw two of the assigned iconic or biblical scenes, in two sessions of three hours each. The second portion was to provide a previously prepared portfolio for the examiners. It was noted that Hitler’s works contained “too few heads”.[6] The institute considered that he had more talent in architecture than in painting. One of the instructors, sympathetic to his situation and believing he had some talent, suggested that he apply to the academy's School of Architecture. However, that would have required returning to secondary school from which he had dropped out and which he was unwilling to do.

You know the harem women actually had quite a lot of power over the Sultan and thus the Ottoman Empire in general, right?

The same applies to Janissaries as well. If I were to be a slave, I'd rather be one with some power and influence, either as the Sultan's fucktoy or as an elite soldier class, than some poor sod who does nothing but harvest crops and get whipped all day.

In fifth grade, my teacher believed every time someone flashed a light, a polar bear died somewhere on the planet, due to global warming.

In highschool, we had this optional religion class where the teacher was basically a lady with a masters in theology who had to teach us about most major religions; she gave a few classes on Christianity which were spot on, then, instead of spouting shit she didn't know, just played us a few movies; she played one about 9/11 to cover the topic of Islam, then a documentary on Manson to cover New Age shit, then The Last Sammurai for all things eastern.

In college, I've had my share of retarded shit; "literary language" teacher explaining how Homer invented rhymes, some others spouting retarded shit about Middle Age French poetry, and this one teacher with a moon tattooed on her forehead, which was teaching a "Communication" class; she made us leave the college and stand in the grass in a huge circle, then hold each other's hands, saying she was teaching us how to properly communicate from soul to soul; I dropped out of her class at that point and came back to watch them with a few friends from afar; they were literally walking around in circles while speaking in tongues (her instructions), then talking to random people about their lives. Fuck liberals.

I also had this actually good philosophy teacher in college who had like ~17 children and told the ladies in the classroom to just drop out of college already and create families, while making long maieutic-like speeches about the inferiority of homosexuals. He actually knew his shit and offered some of the most interesting readings of Plato I've come across. He read all of Greek philosophy as leading to Augustine and being already Christian, though.

>Dadaism was directly responsible for the rise of Hitler

You COULD argue that Duchamp et al made it fashionable to lay waste to the established social order, while also causing Hitler's representational style to look like trite old-fashioned garbage and cause him to look for career alternatives to art school.

There are some small things like that sickle-cell anemia (primarily correlated to African lineage) may be linked to a resistance to malaria, or that Europeans could have a higher resistance to AIDS (with some theorizing that this is related to plagues like the black death). On the whole, though, the strength of your immune system is developed by the environment in which it grows and the pathogens it learns to resist.

There's still an element of method here. I'd happily argue that the Holodomor killed nobody, and that Soviet economic policy towards "kulaks" killed nobody. Adelaide Uni has this too, not at all saying Adelaide is good, but I presume their uni being 3rd rate is the reason they don't have it.
>>
>>397740
It is more the funding mode. Adelaide could hire as many historians as they like, tomorrow, there's at least 3 times as many humanities academics as there are jobs.

And someone like me would put up with teaching Holocaust every year, twice a year, if I got to research [doxx]. But NOOOO.
>>
>>397752
That's a fair assessment, I'm only first year, so I don't have a great bearing on it.
If I do have someone's attention while I'm here, I'm at Adelaide Uni, is there any concensus between people about which uni's are best for a history/humanities degree? I'm taking straight history/art history and a language with the hope of being a curator one day.

What this kind of thing misses is that both PhDs and departmental job postings for teaching or research faculty are hyper specialized. A PhD in History sounds generic until you realize the dissertation and major concentration are meant to shape a historian into someone ultra specialized in one small area and only a few research universities are hiring in that specific area at any time. If your specialty is 20th century Military Administration in Sub-Saharan Africa you're not going to be able to get a teaching job in Critical Theory of 19th Century Indigenous Latin American Culture Studies.

There's actually much more stress than you'd think for an academic department in hiring new faculty. They're beholden to donors, grants, their own academic strengths and weaknesses, the geographic availability of certain research fields or related centers/institutes/museums. Other departments want to bulk up in one research/teaching area and see others as cursory, others are trying to fill quotas of faculty for their preferred theoretical school, and others want to homogenize their department across one theoretical or subject area.

I am uncertain whether it was intended that way, but there is a reason why it's often linked to the problem of universals. It perfectly illustrates what happens if words and categories are taken as absolute truths by someone. And Catholics were pretty keen on the whole 'categories being sewn into Creation by God' business.

In contrast, my AP US history teacher taught us to analyze primary and secondary sources for bias, along with textbooks and even his own lectures, since he admitted he had a liberal bias himself. Not a stupid liberal bias though. In fact, the examples he used to teach us what is usually evidence were excerpts from Howard Zinn's trash-tier history book A People's History of the United States, which is pretty much openly biased in favor of socialism.

If you're applying for a job teaching junior college, tech school, or advanced diploma students, your specialty doesn't matter but you can teach all of these with a general subject area Master's.

Large research universities on the other hand will expect you to have a Phd built around a specialty that you research + teach grad students and advanced undergrads while teaching 1 or 2 entry level classes to freshmen.
