He indeed wanted to spread the revolution, but he was not stupid about it and didn't want to overextend and rely only on military force.
During the polish-Soviet war, he was an advocate of an early peace treaty preserving an independent Poland (at a time when the red army was winning), and it was Lenin who decided to try to conquer the whole country.
